Rooster Teeth returns as Burnie Burns acquires brand under Box Canyon Productions

Express Tribune05-02-2025

Rooster Teeth is making a triumphant return after nearly a year of uncertainty.
The entertainment company, which had announced its closure in March 2024, has now been acquired by its co-founder, Burnie Burns, through his company Box Canyon Productions.
Burns shared the exciting news on the official Rooster Teeth website, expressing his enthusiasm about reviving the brand and its properties. He also encouraged fans to tune into the February 5 episode of the 'Morning Somewhere' podcast for more information, noting that there's a lot of work ahead as the company re-launches.
Founded in 2003 by Burns and his team, Rooster Teeth became widely known for the creation of Red vs. Blue, the third-longest-running web series of all time. Over the years, the company expanded its content offerings, including live-action shorts, animated series, reality shows, and gaming-related content.
Additionally, Rooster Teeth hosted the highly popular RTX convention. At its peak, Rooster Teeth's YouTube channel boasted over 9 million subscribers and 6 billion video views, with a total of more than 45 million subscribers across all its channels.
However, in 2024, parent company Warner Bros. Discovery announced the decision to shut down Rooster Teeth due to its unprofitability. This led to the layoff of around 150 full-time employees, as well as job losses for several contractors and content creators. Despite this, Rooster Teeth's legacy and dedicated fanbase remained strong.
Thanks to Burns' acquisition, Rooster Teeth is set for a fresh start under Box Canyon Productions. Fans are eagerly awaiting how the company will evolve as it navigates its re-launch and works to bring back the beloved entertainment platform.

Russell Simmons sues HBO for $20M over defamation in documentary

Russell Simmons has filed a $20 million defamation lawsuit against HBO, Warner Bros. Discovery, and the filmmakers of the 2020 documentary On the Record. The lawsuit, submitted in Manhattan Supreme Court, alleges the film damaged his reputation and business interests by presenting a biased narrative that ignored critical exculpatory evidence. Simmons, a pioneer of hip-hop culture and co-creator of HBO's Def Comedy Jam and Def Poetry, claims the filmmakers and network disregarded CIA-grade polygraph test results, supportive interviews, and statements that could have cast doubt on the allegations of sexual misconduct featured in the film. The lawsuit names former HBO CEO John Stankey, and directors Amy Ziering and Kirby Dick, accusing them of engaging in deceptive business practices, causing emotional distress, and violating his legal rights. Simmons is demanding at least $20 million in damages and the immediate removal of On the Record from HBO and all affiliated platforms. His legal team argues that continued streaming of the documentary constitutes a 'republication' of defamatory content, further harming Simmons' reputation. Despite confidential settlements with some accusers, Simmons maintains his innocence, stating he never had a non-consensual or unlawful sexual encounter. The lawsuit also mentions that prominent civil rights leaders and members of Congress urged the filmmakers to consider additional evidence, but their appeals were allegedly ignored. Simmons says the international distribution of the documentary has amplified the damage to his name. The film premiered at Sundance Film Festival in January 2020 and was later released on HBO Max. Before its debut, Oprah Winfrey stepped down as executive producer, citing inconsistencies in the featured stories. Simmons continues to deny all allegations made against him, asserting his legal battle is about restoring his name and legacy.

Chahat Fateh Ali Khan brushes off criticism, calls himself 'the best singer'

Listen to article Social media personality and self-styled singer Chahat Fateh Ali Khan has responded strongly to criticism of his music and persona, describing himself as "the best singer" and dismissing critics as jealous. This is not the first time Khan has claimed that others are jealous of him. He reiterated that Pakistani singers, musicians, and anchors are envious of his success. Speaking on a recent local television programme, Khan said many people in the music industry refuse to accept him. 'They don't consider me a singer, and that's fine—I know who I am,' he said. "I create my own music and don't care whether people consider me a singer or not," he remarked. Khan rose to fame through offbeat, self-produced music videos and performances that quickly went viral. His song Bado Badi drew widespread attention—and criticism—which he addressed directly. He insisted his version of the song is completely different from the original. 'Neither Noor Jehan nor Mumtaz gained fame because of the original Bado Badi,' he said. 'Everyone is doing unnecessary 'chaan chaan'. My song is meant for women and is totally unique.'
