Thousands of OFWs Join Gov't Caravan in Dubai for Direct Access to Services
Organized by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), the initiative follows the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to streamline and improve access to public services for OFWs. The event was held in collaboration with various agencies such as OWWA, PSA, Pag-IBIG, SSS, DSWD, PAO, DTI-PTIC, and the Philippine Consulate in Dubai.
From 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., attendees were able to avail of services including contract verification, legal assistance, housing and financial services, and welfare programs from the Migrant Workers Office (MWO). For many, the caravan served as a one-stop shop to address pressing personal and employment concerns without having to return to the Philippines.
The caravan reflects the Philippine government's commitment to making public service accessible, responsive, and relevant to the needs of its modern-day heroes. Beyond paperwork and benefits, it also fostered a sense of connection and reassurance for OFWs working far from home.

Manny Villar Joins Bloomberg Billionaires' Top 100 as Sole Filipino
Business tycoon and former senator Manuel 'Manny' Villar Jr. has secured a spot in Bloomberg's prestigious Billionaires Index, placing 99th among the world's 500 wealthiest individuals. Villar is the only Filipino to break into the top 100, with an estimated net worth of $23.1 billion. His wealth increased by $617 million or 2.7% over the past year, largely driven by the continued growth of his property empire. Villar's vast real estate portfolio includes Vista Land & Lifescapes, Vistamalls, AllHome, and AllDay Marts—companies that span residential developments, retail malls, home improvement, and supermarket chains. His success in these sectors has helped elevate him to one of the most influential figures in Philippine business. Meanwhile, fellow Filipino billionaire Enrique Razon Jr., known for his ventures in ports and casinos, ranked 239th on the list with a net worth of $12.3 billion. His wealth saw a significant boost of nearly $3 billion from the previous year, reflecting the ongoing strength of his international logistics and gaming operations. Manny Villar, a former Senate president, is married to ex-senator Cynthia Villar and is the father of current senators Mark and Camille Villar. His presence on the Bloomberg list not only marks personal financial success but also highlights the influence of the Villar family in both business and politics in the Philippines.

PH to buy more BrahMos missiles from India as deterrent amid regional tensions
The Philippines will procure additional BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles from India to boost the country's defense capabilities, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said. In an interview with Indian news outlet Firstpost, Marcos said the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) needs more missile batteries in response to the security challenges in the region. 'I've spoken to the officers and men who operate the BrahMos system, and they say we need more,' Marcos said. The President is in India for a five-day state visit from August 4 to 8. He said he was thankful that the missiles have not been used so far but noted the military's confidence in the system following training and demonstration exercises. 'From the demonstrations that they've seen, from the training that they've received both in India and in the Philippines, the practice runs that they've done, they seem terribly confident in the equipment,' he said. While the procurement is not included in the Department of National Defense's 2025 budget, Marcos said the government is already working on acquiring more units. If Congress includes the procurement in the 2026 national budget, delivery could take place by 2028. The President stressed that the move is part of the ongoing AFP modernization program and not a preparation for war. 'We are not gearing up for war. We are simply reacting to the challenges that we are facing,' he said. The Philippines received its first BrahMos missile system in April 2024, becoming the first foreign buyer of the supersonic anti-ship missile developed by Indo-Russian firm BrahMos Aerospace. The second batch arrived in April 2025. The government acquired three missile batteries worth P18.9 billion under the Philippine Navy's Shore-Based Anti-Ship Missile Acquisition Project, which was conceptualized in 2017 and formalized in 2021. The Philippine Army also plans to acquire BrahMos missiles under its Land-Based Missile System Acquisition Project, originally scheduled for 2023 but moved to 2027. In 2024, the United States Army deployed its Typhon missile system to an undisclosed area in northern Luzon during joint military exercises with the Philippines.

DMW vows to digitalize, adopt hybrid setup for future Serbisyo Caravans after overwhelming turnout in Dubai
Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac has vowed a more efficient and digitalized rollout of the OFW Serbisyo Caravan, after an overwhelming turnout in Dubai left some attendees unserved. In a news release, Cacdac acknowledged the difficulties faced during the Bagong Bayani ng Mundo – OFW Serbisyo Caravan held at the Dubai World Trade Center on August 3, where close to 12,000 government transactions were recorded amid a surge of OFW attendees. 'We apologize to those who were not served on that day. But rest assured, we will be back in more ways than one—we will sharpen our digitalization efforts,' said Cacdac. 'We vow, na sa susunod na round, lalo na sa Dubai, we will have a hybrid part two, where processes are digitalized. And this will be the general trend for our future caravans starting sa pagbabalik natin sa Dubai,' he added. Following the incident, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is preparing to implement a hybrid service model in future caravans, one that integrates digital platforms with on-site services to reach more Filipinos. Cacdac said that while digital transformation is key, the DMW recognizes that not all services can be conducted online, particularly those that require physical presence. 'While we pursue online solutions such as dataflow systems and partnerships with firms like VFS, we also recognize the indispensable role of in-person services, particularly for biometric-based processes like national ID registration and legal document issuance through the Public Attorney's Office (PAO),' he explained. Dataflow systems are being explored to fast-track applications by digitizing and verifying submitted documents online. Partnerships with firms such as VFS Global, which manages application and appointment systems for various government and visa services, are also part of the plan to streamline operations abroad. Services in high demand The one-day caravan in Dubai served a total of 5,928 Filipinos and completed 11,569 government transactions. Among the most requested services included OWWA membership and renewal, E-card issuance, registration for the national ID through PSA, document requests, contribution payments to PhilHealth and SSS, and applications for MP2 savings under Pag-IBIG. Due to the overwhelming number of e-Card requests, OWWA Administrator Patricia Yvonne Caunan announced that the OFW e-card printer used during the event will remain at the Migrant Workers Office in Dubai, allowing Filipino residents to continue availing the service even after the caravan's conclusion.
