Chaminade-Madonna baseball celebrates district title with another walk-off thriller
As Yogi Berra famously said: 'It's déjà vu all over again.'
If Chaminade-Madonna shortstop John Bishop is unfamiliar with the phrase attributed to the baseball legend, the senior will surely understand it now.
On Thursday night, Bishop delivered yet another walk-off hit in extra innings, chopping an RBI single into right field that lifted the Lions to a 1-0 win over NSU University School in the District 14-2A championship game at NSU.
No stranger to long games, the Lions' claimed the district crown by winning two extra-inning affairs. Thursday's thriller, however, lasted a mere 2-hours, 15-minutes.
Compare that to Tuesday when Chaminade outlasted Hialeah Educational Academy, 2-1, in 17 innings. That marathon started at 3:30 p.m. and ended roughly five hours later with a Bishop walk-off double.
The Lions (23-3) were the top seed, and Thursday's contest lived up to the billing against No. 2 seeded U-School (23-4).
Both schools will advance to the best-of-three regionals, with the seedings and matchups scheduled to be released on Friday.
There's a good chance both schools will host in the regional quarterfinals. Cardinal Newman is expected to be the top seed, and Chaminade would appear to be the No. 2 seed. But that's to be determined.
The way the Lions are rolling, they're ready to take on anyone.
'This team was built on picking [players] until you make it,' Chaminade coach Mark McCoy said. 'Now, we're starting to make it. We've now beaten all the top teams in our region. We beat Newman. We beat St. John Paul. We beat these guys. So, I mean, we've got to feel invincible going into the playoffs. We control our own destiny.'
Chaminade's winning rally came with two outs in the eighth. Josh Andel, on a 2-2 pitch, bounced a high grounder into right field, just out of the reach of second baseman Isaac Rosa. Miguel Roa worked the count full and drew a walk, putting runners on first and second for Bishop.
Bishop attacked the first pitch, and chopped the ball into right field. Andel rounded third and slid home with the lone run of the game.
Both teams had their chances prior to extra innings, but neither could push across a run.
U-School started the game with Bradyn Potter doubling on the first pitch of the game off Chaminade right-hander Santi Arismendi, who worked four innings.
The Lions had a shot in the sixth inning when Trace Zalman singled up the middle, but Potter made a perfect throw to the plate, and catcher Griffin Pomper applied the tag on pinch-runner Nolan Loonam, who was out on a bang-bang play.
The Sharks had a golden chance in the fifth inning off reliever Manny Delaosa, who loaded the bases with one out. Gage Agate inherited the jam but retired Pomper and Rocco Rovetto to keep the game scoreless.
Sharks starter Aiden Jacobs impressed in 5 2/3 scoreless innings. Manuel relieved in the sixth and kept the Lions off the board.
Chaminade's pitching was sensational in the two-game district, giving up one run in 25 innings.
'We play our game,' McCoy said. 'We don't worry about anybody else. We worry about what we do and we're going to win.'

Za'Darius Smith: 'Hopefully,' I'm back with the Detroit Lions
Defensive end Za'Darius Smith remains a free agent, but, in the end, he wants to be back with the team that he went to the playoffs with last season, that being the Detroit Lions — who cut him in March. "Hopefully, I can get back to Detroit because the coaching staff and everybody in the front office are great," Smith told USA TODAY Sports. "When I'm there, I feel like a leader and like I can influence the young guys and do great things. Hopefully, I can get back to where I want to be in Detroit." Smith split the 2024 season with the Cleveland Browns and Lions, who acquired him at the NFL trade deadline after suffering myriad defensive injuries, including to star pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson, a 2023 Pro Bowler. In all, Smith finished the 2024 regular season with a combined nine sacks and 35 combined tackles. Smith ranked 21st among edge defenders in pass-rush grade (76.5), 33rd in overall grade (74.7) and 85th in run-defense grade (62.8) according to Pro Football Focus. Now, should Smith return to Detroit, there are some changes on the coaching side, as the Lions lost defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn — who became the new head coach of the New York Jets — and promoted former linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard to the position. They also have a new defensive line coach in Kacy Rodgers, among many other coaching changes. The 32-year-old Smith, who expressed that he's focused on "getting a ring now and winning a championship," thinks he and Hutchinson could be a special duo off the edge. "I'm still a veteran. He's [Hutchinson] still a young guy. I can help him with a lot of things. He's already great, but as a player, there are some tools that I know that I can help him with," Smith said. "And there are some things as a young guy that he can help me with." Smith, a three-time Pro Bowler, spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Baltimore Ravens (2015-18), followed by a three-year stint with the Green Bay Packers (2019-21), one season with the Minnesota Vikings (2022) and a season-plus with the Browns before being acquired by the Lions during the 2024 season. Elsewhere, Detroit re-signed defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike, defensive end Marcus Davenport and linebacker Ezekiel Turner to one-year deals apiece, while adding defensive tackle Roy Lopez and selecting Ohio State defensive tackle Tyleik Williams with the No. 28 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Last season, the Lions went 15-2 and claimed the No. 1 seed in the NFC before losing to the Washington Commanders in the NFC divisional round. Detroit's defense surrendered 244.0 passing yards (30th in the NFL), 98.4 rushing yards (fifth), 342.4 total yards (20th) and 20.1 points (seventh) per game. Bayer Leverkusen make crucial transfer decision amid Jack Grealish interest
Bayer Leverkusen have rethought their stance on Manchester City's James McAtee as they hunt for a replacement for Liverpool-bound Florian Wirtz, as per a new report. Wirtz is nearing the completion of a sensational move to Anfield as negotiations progress to an advanced stage between Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen, who have received an improved £113 million offer for the 22-year-old after turning down an opening bid from Merseyside. Advertisement Liverpool are understood to have agreed personal terms with Wirtz that will see the Germany international sign a long-term contract with the Premier League champions, who won the league title in Arne Slot's debut campaign in England last term. Leverkusen are poised to cashing in on Wirtz and are actively searching for a suitable replacement for the attacking midfielder, with a long-standing interest in Manchester City star and England U-21 international James McAtee. McAtee's Manchester City future was put in further doubt as the 22-year-old has chosen to captain his National Team at the U-21 European Championship and turned down a chance to represent his boyhood club at the FIFA Club World Cup. Advertisement The Salford-born star struggled for regular game time last season and despite a much greater look into the first-team after March, there is little evidence to suggest McAtee will realise his true potential under Pep Guardiola. With 12 months remaining on his current deal at the Etihad Stadium, McAtee wants a permanent transfer to start fresh and progress his career and Manchester City will be looking for a market fee for another product of their academy. Bayer Leverkusen have held a long-standing interest in McAtee and it is understood that the German outfit have held direct talks with Manchester City over the attacking midfielder, who is very attracted by the prospect of moving to Germany for next season. However, Bild are reporting that Leverkusen have withdrawn their interest in McAtee and are focusing on alternative targets as they prepare for life without Florian Wirtz and look to spend the incoming transfer fee for their best player, as relayed by Get Football News Germany. Advertisement Manchester City's €20 million valuation has put off Leverkusen, who are exited the race to sign McAtee, who has also attracted interest from Eintracht Frankfurt and VfB Stuttgart. It is worth noting that City are likely to prefer to sell McAtee to a foreign club. Cole Palmer joined Chelsea for £40 million in 2023 and has turned himself into one of the best forwards in Europe after two outstanding seasons in west London. City have frequently sold academy and bit-part players to their direct Premier League rivals and it has come back to bite them. Jack Grealish has also recently been linked with a move to Bayer Leverkusen and incoming manager Erik ten Hag is believed to have conveyed his desire of signing the 29-year-old England international to replace Wirtz, with Manchester City set to demand £50 million for their record signing this summer.

Ex-Detroit Lions RB Joique Bell brings portable phone chargers to Ford Field
Ford Field visitors no longer have to worry about a dead phone battery or leaving their devices behind to charge — and they have a former Detroit Lion to thank for it. Six new portable phone charging kiosks debuted at the stadium on Tuesday, June 10, replacing the older locker-style stations. Attendees can now rent chargers and carry them throughout the stadium during football games, concerts and other events. The service is powered by the Detroit-based startup U Charge Up, co-founded by former Lions running back Joique Bell, alongside Daryl Graham, Larry Watson Jr. and Aaron Higginbottom. "As a former Lion and lifelong Detroiter, it's rewarding to introduce a solution that enhances the fan experience at Ford Field,' Bell said. 'With our U Charge Up kiosks, fans can capture memories, stay connected and fully enjoy every moment without worrying about their battery life." More: Za'Darius Smith, an NFL free agent, reveals where he wants to play in 2025 Through the U Charge Up app — available on iOS and Android — users can find the nearest kiosk, rent a high-performance portable charger for $2.50 per half hour, and return it to any of the six kiosks when finished. The service will be available during all Ford Field events. The phone charger kiosks in Ford Field are located at Gates A, B, C, E and G, as well as on the third-floor suites level. The company's technology is already in use at other Michigan locations, including the Hudson Café and Four Winds Casino. Since launching in November 2023, it has expanded to Indiana, Tennessee, Florida, California and Alabama. "We want you to stay connected and stay in the moment," Bell told the Free Press. "We want you to be able to take videos of moments that you may not ever capture again. … Our batteries are small enough to where they can fit in your pocket." U Charge Up says it focuses on sustainability by using eco-friendly, reusable chargers and a rental model that reduces electronic waste. The company also partners with local businesses to promote community engagement and energy-efficient charging solutions.
