Chaminade-Madonna baseball celebrates district title with another walk-off thriller

Miami Herald18-04-2025

As Yogi Berra famously said: 'It's déjà vu all over again.'
If Chaminade-Madonna shortstop John Bishop is unfamiliar with the phrase attributed to the baseball legend, the senior will surely understand it now.
On Thursday night, Bishop delivered yet another walk-off hit in extra innings, chopping an RBI single into right field that lifted the Lions to a 1-0 win over NSU University School in the District 14-2A championship game at NSU.
No stranger to long games, the Lions' claimed the district crown by winning two extra-inning affairs. Thursday's thriller, however, lasted a mere 2-hours, 15-minutes.
Compare that to Tuesday when Chaminade outlasted Hialeah Educational Academy, 2-1, in 17 innings. That marathon started at 3:30 p.m. and ended roughly five hours later with a Bishop walk-off double.
The Lions (23-3) were the top seed, and Thursday's contest lived up to the billing against No. 2 seeded U-School (23-4).
Both schools will advance to the best-of-three regionals, with the seedings and matchups scheduled to be released on Friday.
There's a good chance both schools will host in the regional quarterfinals. Cardinal Newman is expected to be the top seed, and Chaminade would appear to be the No. 2 seed. But that's to be determined.
The way the Lions are rolling, they're ready to take on anyone.
'This team was built on picking [players] until you make it,' Chaminade coach Mark McCoy said. 'Now, we're starting to make it. We've now beaten all the top teams in our region. We beat Newman. We beat St. John Paul. We beat these guys. So, I mean, we've got to feel invincible going into the playoffs. We control our own destiny.'
Chaminade's winning rally came with two outs in the eighth. Josh Andel, on a 2-2 pitch, bounced a high grounder into right field, just out of the reach of second baseman Isaac Rosa. Miguel Roa worked the count full and drew a walk, putting runners on first and second for Bishop.
Bishop attacked the first pitch, and chopped the ball into right field. Andel rounded third and slid home with the lone run of the game.
Both teams had their chances prior to extra innings, but neither could push across a run.
U-School started the game with Bradyn Potter doubling on the first pitch of the game off Chaminade right-hander Santi Arismendi, who worked four innings.
The Lions had a shot in the sixth inning when Trace Zalman singled up the middle, but Potter made a perfect throw to the plate, and catcher Griffin Pomper applied the tag on pinch-runner Nolan Loonam, who was out on a bang-bang play.
The Sharks had a golden chance in the fifth inning off reliever Manny Delaosa, who loaded the bases with one out. Gage Agate inherited the jam but retired Pomper and Rocco Rovetto to keep the game scoreless.
Sharks starter Aiden Jacobs impressed in 5 2/3 scoreless innings. Manuel relieved in the sixth and kept the Lions off the board.
Chaminade's pitching was sensational in the two-game district, giving up one run in 25 innings.
'We play our game,' McCoy said. 'We don't worry about anybody else. We worry about what we do and we're going to win.'

Advantage Australia: Lions sweat on Wallabies rejects

And just like that, there are more Australian players in the British & Irish Lions squad than Welshmen. Canberra born-and-raised prop Finlay Bealham, now plying his trade in Ireland, has been drafted into Andy Farrell's touring squad for the upcoming showpiece series in Australia following the withdrawal of Scotland front-rower Zander Fagerson with a calf injury. Hailing from the same esteemed ACT high school as former Wallabies Matt Giteau and twins Anthony and Saia Faingaa, among others, Bealham has made 51 Test appearances for Ireland after leaving Australia searching for opportunities as a teenager some 15 years ago. Despite being selected for the national schoolboys' team and representing Australia A side, Bealham was not offered a place in the Brumbies academy and instead ventured to Ireland to start his professional career. Tighthead prop Zander Fagerson has been ruled out of the #Lions2025 Tour with a calf injury, with Ireland and Connacht's Finlay Bealham called up to replace him ⬇️ — British & Irish Lions (@lionsofficial) June 9, 2025 However the 33-year-old is now viewed by the Brumbies, Bealham is certainly well respected by Wallabies mentor Joe Schmidt, who presented the tighthead his first Test cap as Ireland coach in 2016. "It's tough on Zander to miss out so close to the tour," Farrell said. "But now Finlay gets an opportunity to come in and add to the group. "This is unfortunately part and parcel of the game so we always have to be prepared for that." The veteran's call-up, and Fagerson's scratching, not only adds to the growing concerns about the Lions' tighthead-prop situation, but will also increase the angst among fans not happy about the increasing number of non-British and Irish born players in Farrell's squad. The ginger-bearded Bealham is the eighth southern hemisphere-born player in the 38-man group, joining fellow Australians Mack Hansen and Sione Tuipulotu, Kiwis Bundee Aki, Jamison Gibson-Park and James Lowe and South Africans, Pierre Schoeman and Duhan van der Merwe, who all qualify on residency grounds. And less than two years after the Red Dragon sent Eddie Jones' Wallabies packing from the 2023 World Cup with a record 40-6 group-stage mauling, the ledger now stands at Australian players three, Wales two in the Lions squad. Skipper Jac Morgan and scrumhalf Tomos Williams are the only two Welshmen among the Lions - their lowest representation in a British & Irish Lions squad in the post-war era. The so-called "foreign invasion" has apparently not gone down well in the northern hemisphere, with the likes of legendary five-times Lions tourist John McBride among those said to be "bothered". But of greater concern for the Lions, perhaps, should be the diminishing front-row stocks. Fellow Irish prop Tadhg Furlong is also nursing a calf injury, while England's Will Stuart will only link up with the squad on Saturday after playing for Bath in the English Premiership final. The rest of the players in the Lions squad who are not still involved in club duties have assembled in Dublin and were to travel to Portugal on Tuesday for a six-day training camp.

Free-agent edge Za'Darius Smith: 'Hopefully I can get back to Detroit'

Free-agent edge Za'Darius Smith: 'Hopefully I can get back to Detroit' Show Caption Hide Caption Greg Olsen expresses excitement for upcoming Olympic flag football Former TE Greg Olsen is excited for some NFL players to showcase their skills in the upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics and the debut of flag football. Sports Seriously LOS ANGELES -- Free-agent pass rusher Za'Darius Smith is aware of where he wants to continue his playing career. His heart is still in Motown. 'We both know where I want to be,' Smith told USA TODAY Sports at the 2025 BET Awards. 'Hopefully I can get back to Detroit because the coaching staff and everybody in the front office are great. When I'm there I feel like a leader and like I can influence the young guys and do great things. Hopefully I can get back to where I want to be in Detroit.' Smith played for the Baltimore Ravens, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions during his NFL career. The Lions acquired Smith from the Browns last season ahead of the trade deadline. Detroit got Smith at a time in which the club desperately needed pass rush help following Aidan Hutchinson's season-ending leg injury. The veteran produced 12 tackles, four sacks and 40 pressures in eight games with the Lions all without Hutchinson. Hutchinson, Smith and defensive tackle Alim McNeill were the Lions highest-graded pass rushers last year, per Pro Football Focus. Hutchinson's since been cleared to return to football activities this offseason, and Smith believes the two can form a stout edge tandem. 'I'm still a veteran. He's still a young guy. I can help him with a lot of things. He's already great but as a player there are some tools that I know that I can help him with,' Smith said. 'And there are some things as a young guy that he can help me with.' Smith is one of USA TODAY Sports' top remaining free agents. He's compiled 333 tackles, 69 sacks and 173 QB hits in 140 career regular-season games. The 32-year-old showed this past season that he still has plenty left to give to a team. At this stage of Smith's career, though, the three-time Pro Bowler wants to compete for a championship – and he's holding out hope that he'll chase a ring in Detroit. 'I'm going into Year 11. As a veteran (a championship) is the only thing that I'm missing,' Smith said. 'I did the sacks, All-Pro, Pro Bowl, so it's really just me getting a ring now and winning a championship.' Amon-Ra St. Brown Reveals Lions Player He's Excited About Heading Toward Fall Camp

Amon-Ra St. Brown Reveals Lions Player He's Excited About Heading Toward Fall Camp originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Detroit Lions finished 15-3 last season but were unable to achieve their biggest goal of reaching and winning Super Bowl LIX after winning the NFC North Division. Advertisement The Lions' offense put 31 points on the board against the Washington Commanders but lost 45-31 amid three Jared Goff interceptions. The Lions were led in receiving by Amon-Ra St. Brown, who had 8 catches for 137 yards and a touchdown, Jahmyr Gibbs, Sam LaPorta and others. On Monday, St. Brown revealed the Lions player he's excited about heading into fall camp who could take a big leap forward in 2025-26. "Not taking anything away from what he did last year," St. Brown said. "He's a baller, but I can tell this year, he's making plays out there every day," he added. Advertisement "He's gonna have a big year." The Lions' passing attack is expected to look similar to last year's with LaPorta at tight end, backed up by Brock Wright along with Kenny Yeboah and Shane Zylstra. St. Brown is expected to be joined by a thicker-built, stronger Jameson Williams and Tim Patrick, who made memorable contributions down the stretch of the Lions' division title run. LaPorta's memorable diving touchdown catch against the Commanders showed the former Iowa star has another gear he is capable of reaching. Now, the task will be to make the extraordinary look ordinary as the Lions prepare for what they hope will be another championship season.
