Lionel Messi's return to Inter Miami is unclear as he deals with right leg injury

NBC News4 days ago
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Inter Miami star Lionel Messi is dealing with a minor muscle injury in his right leg after being hurt in the opening minutes of Saturday's Leagues Cup match against Necaxa, the club said Sunday.
Messi underwent tests on his right leg after experiencing discomfort following a play in which he fell while being challenged by a pair of Necaxa defenders, in a game Inter Miami won on penalty kicks.
His timeline for return isn't yet known, though it seems unlikely that he will be available for Miami's next Leagues Cup match against UNAM Pumas on Wednesday.
Inter Miami said in a release that Messi's medical clearance will depend on how he responds to treatment.
Messi slapped his hand against the ground in frustration after the fall, which happened in the first 10 minutes of Saturday's match.
He walked slowly toward the Inter Miami bench before sitting down on the pitch. Trainers came out and worked on his right upper thigh area for a couple of minutes before he subbed out for Federico Redondo in the 11th. He then immediately walked to the locker room.

"Yeah, I was going to whoop Jimmy's a--" - Udonis Haslem admits he was ready to throw hands with Jimmy Butler for trying to fight Erik Spoelstra

"Yeah, I was going to whoop Jimmy's a--" - Udonis Haslem admits he was ready to throw hands with Jimmy Butler for trying to fight Erik Spoelstra originally appeared on Basketball Network. Udonis Haslem spent 20 years in a Miami Heat uniform and won three championships. His role changed over time, but his purpose never did. When Jimmy Butler got into it with Erik Spoelstra on the bench during a 2022 game against the Warriors, Haslem stood up before things crossed the line. "Yeah, I was going to whoop Jimmy's a—," Haslem said on "The Pat McAfee Show" earlier this year. "And I love Jimmy, that's nothing against Jimmy. But before I let one guy take down this locker room, I'll whoop your a—. It's 15 other guys here got the right mindset. Before I let one guy take down these other 15, I'll whoop your a—." The Heat were down 19 points in the third quarter when Spoelstra slammed his clipboard and started shouting. Butler kept going, and it looked like he wanted to challenge the coach physically. Haslem stepped in and told him it wasn't going to happen. He didn't care who Butler was or how many points he scored. Butler played well, but wore thin Butler, who was traded to the Golden State Warriors before the February trade deadline, averaged 21.3 points, 6.1 rebounds and 5.4 assists over five seasons in Miami. He made the All-Star team five times, helped carry the team to the Finals in 2020 and 2023, and had several massive playoff games. His 56-point night against Milwaukee in 2023 is still the highest scoring postseason performance in franchise history. But none of that kept the locker room from breaking down. Butler missed shootarounds, skipped a team flight and served three separate suspensions in a six-week stretch. He asked for a trade in January, and the team granted it without much resistance. The Heat sent him off in exchange for draft picks and expiring contracts. Spoelstra later admitted the situation wore everyone down. It wasn't the worst team culture he had ever dealt with, but it came close. Still, he praised the players who stayed focused and held the line while the trade process played out. "I feel like it was less with this team, believe it or not," Spoelstra said last season. "And that's not taking away from anything that the group had to go through emotionally the last several weeks, because I really commend the group for just, you know, staying the course and focusing on the present moment."Standing up for his squad Haslem never backed away from a confrontation when it came to defending the locker room. He had played with Shaquille O'Neal, Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh. He had seen what winning teams look like from the inside. In his mind, no player should be bigger than the rest of the roster. Butler scored more than 6,000 points in a Heat uniform and led the team in playoff scoring in three different postseasons. But the Heat went 0-2 in the Finals during his run and were eliminated twice in the first round. The production was there, but the trust ran out. Haslem didn't care about name recognition. His job was to protect the culture that made the Heat what they are. And if that meant going after the franchise player on national TV, he didn't story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Aug 7, 2025, where it first appeared.
