The rising girl group, Babymonster, known for its powerful performance and charismatic stage presence, kicked off its first world tour "Hello Monster" with an intense two-day performance.
The seven-member group, debuted in April of last year, made their way to the Kspo Dome, known as the mecca of K-pop concerts, less than a year after their debut. Dressed in dazzling black-and-white outfits, the seven members made their grand entrance on stage with fireworks and flame effects. The group opened the show with band arrangements of their hit songs "Drip" and "Batter Up."
Members expressed sincere excitement about their first world tour.
"Does it even make sense that our first concert of world tour is in Seoul, and at such a huge venue like Kspo Dome?" said Rora. Throughout the show, members' confident vocals were supported by the rhythmic live band session, elevating the quality of the performance.
Following the group's hit tracks, solo stages highlighting each member's charm were showcased. The members put their own spin on songs by global pop stars like Charlie Puth and Olivia Rodrigo.
They also covered 2NE1's songs, "Clap Your Hands" and "Go Away," as a tribute to their senior group. After the Seoul concert, Babymonster will continue their tour with a total of 23 performances across 14 cities in North America and Asia.

Hybe bets big on global stage with new boy band Cortis and Latin pop projects
K-pop powerhouse unveils fresh acts while testing new markets with US and Latin American training and audition projects Hybe is doubling down on its global expansion strategy — not just through multinational K-pop groups, but also with new local projects aimed at replicating the success of BTS. With its first international girl group Katseye slowly gaining traction, the K-pop powerhouse is preparing to introduce three more global acts: two boy bands and another girl group. At the same time, Hybe is turning heads with the debut of Cortis, a new boy group under Big Hit Music, a Hybe subsidiary. Cortis aims for global debut impact Set to debut Monday, Cortis has already made a bold statement by shooting its concept photos and music video in Los Angeles. The group is also holding events in both Seoul and Los Angeles to commemorate the release of its lead single 'What You Want' from the upcoming EP 'Color Outside the Lines,' set for early September release. The events include giving out 1,000 ice creams a day to fans in Santa Monica, California, on Aug. 23, with the same event having taken place in Yongsan, Seoul, Saturday and Sunday. 'It is highly uncommon for a rookie group to hold offline debut events in two countries,' Big Hit Music said Friday in a statement, highlighting Cortis' early push for international exposure. Los Angeles holds special significance for the group, as the members spent three months there last year working on their album. Cortis consists of five members: leader Martin, a Korean Canadian; James from Hong Kong; and three Korean members — Juhoon, Seonghyeon and Keonho. According to Big Hit, this is the first Hybe-affiliated K-pop group with a foreign passport holder serving as leader. The debut comes as Big Hit Music's first new boy group launch in more than six years, underscoring the company's high expectations for Cortis to follow in BTS' global footsteps. Katseye proves global appeal Katseye — Hybe's flagship global girl group formed in partnership with Geffen Records — is proving skeptics wrong. Initially met with doubts when it debuted in June 2024, the multinational act has recorded notable achievements on the international stage. As of Aug. 13, Katseye's monthly active listeners on Spotify reached 25.17 million, ranking just behind BTS, Blackpink and Twice among K-pop groups. Their track 'Gabriela' from the second EP 'Beautiful Chaos' climbed 20 spots to No. 77 on the UK Official Singles Chart, marking six consecutive weeks on the chart. The EP also peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 in July, while both tracks 'Gnarly' and 'Gabriela' entered the Billboard Hot 100. Building on Katseye's success as a 'next-generation pop icon,' Hybe and Geffen Records are now preparing a second multinational girl group. The two companies, on Aug. 7, announced the launch of 'World Scout: The Final Piece,' a large-scale audition program in Japan. Successful candidates will undergo Hybe and Geffen's US-style K-pop training program from October to December, before joining an American training camp. After a series of evaluations, the finalists will form a new group set to debut next year. Hybe is also expanding aggressively into Latin America. Hybe Latin America, on Friday, premiered Santos Bravos, a reality audition series on YouTube that will form a new boy band of the same name. The show brings together 16 contestants from across Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Colombia, Spain and the US, combining Hybe's systematic training system with Latin America's distinct cultural identity. 'This project will showcase the challenges and growth of participants, collaborations with guest artists and the creation of cultural moments to global audiences,' Hybe Latin America said. 'We aim to connect music, culture and community beyond borders.' The company has already tested the waters with 'Pase a la Fama,' Latin America's first band-audition program co-produced with Mexico's Telemundo. The show, which launched in June, topped US Spanish-language TV ratings in its time slot and drew 688,000 viewers for its premiere, according to Nielsen. Isaac Lee, CEO of Hybe America, emphasized the importance of Hybe founder Bang Si-hyuk's vision in guiding these efforts. 'This project, rooted in local culture yet viewed through a global lens, has opened a new future for Latin music,' Lee said.

How Kimdea found love and millions of followers
Korean-Indonesian couple behind popular TikTok channel proves small moments and simple food can connect the world Digital platforms have shrunk the world, and among the frontrunners bridging cultures online is Korean-Indonesian couple Kim Seung-woo and Dea Sardiyana -- the duo behind TikTok channel Kimdea, its name blending Kim's surname with Sardiyana's given name. With 2.8 million followers and videos regularly amassing millions of views, they've carved out a niche that blends cross-cultural storytelling with the everyday charm of food and lifestyle vlogs. And the story of these powerhouse social influencers could be straight out of a K-drama. 'We met in 2015 — exactly 10 years ago — while I was traveling in Southeast Asia. We happened to take the same bus from Siem Reap to Bangkok, Thailand, and sat next to each other. It was an eight-hour ride, giving us plenty of time to talk, exchange phone numbers and keep in touch,' said Sardiyana during a virtual interview with The Korea Herald on Tuesday. The two got married in 2019. And in 2022 came a pivotal moment. Sardiyana posted a long-form video recounting their first meeting on her TikTok account. The clip went viral, drawing 100,000 new followers in a single day and amassing over 20 million views -- which ultimately turned the account into a full-time venture. The two officially launched the channel in 2022. The couple introduces their content as centering on finding joy in everyday moments, particularly through food. 'Many people just try to find something interesting outside, but we can find something interesting really close to us,' said Sardiyana, noting that one of their popular formats features them buying snacks from street food vendors who pass by their home in Indonesia. A key draw for viewers -- many of whom are Indonesian -- is Kim's candid reaction to cultural quirks. 'Another thing that makes (the account) really fun and interesting, I think, is (Kim's reaction). Many people are curious to see how Koreans react, because I think in Korea it's not common for street vendors to come right to your house. Our audience was so interested in watching him,' she said. According to Kim, K-culture content also plays a significant role in their appeal. 'When we post about Korea -- especially things that aren't so common -- it seems like those get a lot of views,' Kim noted. 'For example, hanbok styles you see in Indonesia are quite simple. So when we did a hanbok photoshoot in Korea, wearing more luxurious hanbok, viewers realized, 'Oh, this is what hanbok can be like,' and became more interested. When we made content about that, it got a lot of views," said Kim. Beyond entertainment, the couple said they have seen their videos have a real-world impact. 'For example, we buy food from one vendor and they're usually really open, really welcoming and really kind. So sometimes, we make videos about them. One time, we made a video about a vendor and it went viral,' Sardiyana said. 'The lady from the video came to us and gave us so much fruit and food to say thank you. It felt like we didn't really do anything — we just made the video — but we hadn't realized how big the impact could be for them," she added. Looking ahead, Kimdea plans to stay rooted in food while expanding their scope. 'In the future, I think we'll still be doing food, but we want to expand the topic. ... Right now, we often buy food and then do mukbang, because Seung-woo can eat a lot. But we also want to add a new topic, focusing on cooking -- especially Indonesian and Korean dishes,' Sardiyana shared. The duo has already earned back-to-back nominations for TikTok's Food Creator of the Year award in 2023 and 2024 -- and they're curious if a third is on the horizon. 'We didn't expect it to happen twice. The first time we were really shocked and surprised, but the second time we felt okay. ... I thought, maybe this means we're on the right track,' Sardiyana said. 'We always stay positive -- even if we don't get nominated (a third time), that's okay. We'll still keep doing what we're doing now," she said. yoonseo.3348@
