The Eiffel Tower glowed in team colours, and fans partied through the night in celebrations that were largely peaceful but degenerated into violence in some areas. Football fans in Paris have clashed with police after the Champion's Cup final. (9News) It was Paris Saint-Germain's first premiership win in the competition. (9News) Earlier on Saturday night in Munich, police lined up in front of the PSG end of the stadium at the final whistle but struggled to contain the fans for several minutes when they came down from the stands following the trophy presentation. They did eventually manage to force them back into the stands, and PSG players had already headed back to the locker room, appearing to cut short celebrations in front of their supporters. Players eventually made their way back to the field with the trophy after order was restored. A 17-year-old boy was stabbed to death in the western city of Dax during a PSG street party after Saturday night's final in Munich, the national police service said. A man in his 20s was killed in Paris when his scooter was hit by a car during PSG celebrations, the interior minister's office said. The circumstances of both are being investigated. A police officer was hit accidentally by fireworks at a PSG gathering in Coutances in north-west France and placed in an artificial coma because of grave eye injuries, the national police service said. (AP Photo/Aurelien Morissard) A total of 192 people were injured around the capital, four of them seriously, the Paris police chief said on Sunday. The team was expected to return to a big victory parade on the Champs-Elysees on Sunday afternoon, with up to 110,000 people allowed along the iconic, tree-lined avenue to see the victorious players. Later, the team will join fans packed into PSG's home stadium, the Parc des Princes, on the city's western edge, for a concert and light show and official presentation of the Champions League trophy. A wide swathe of central Paris was closed to traffic for the exceptional day. The security measures are also impacting the French Open unfolding nearby. (AP Photo/Aurelien Morissard) Thousands of police are being deployed to keep order, and will employ similar tactics as they did Saturday night, Paris police chief Laurent Nunez told reporters. AP reporters saw tear gas used near the stadium and and water cannons used near the Arc de Triomphe to disperse rowdy crowds. In addition to the injuries and arrests, Nunez said four stores were looted. Firefighters were so busy extinguishing garbage can fires in the middle of celebrations and dealing with other emergencies that the fire hotline was saturated. By 2am on Sunday (10am AEST), a total of 294 arrests had been made, including 30 people who broke into a shoe shop on the Champs-Élysées. Two cars were set alight close to Parc des Princes, police added. At the Place de la Bastille, there were joyous scenes as fans climbed onto the base of the famous column, singing, dancing and letting off flares, while those around joined in. Footage showed fireworks and flares set off outside the stadium. (9News) At one point, motorbikes loudly revved their engines and the crowd cheered as they did laps around the column. There were no police nearby and, by 1am, the atmosphere was upbeat with no tensions and plenty of singing. Nunez blamed the scattered troubles on "thousands of people who came to commit acts of violence" instead of watching the match. He noted similar unrest on the sidelines of prior celebrations in the capital, such as after France's World Cup win in 2018. riot

I turned down an invitation to Epstein's island: Trump

Donald Trump, who socialised with Jeffrey Epstein, has told why their relationship ended. (AP PHOTO) Donald Trump, who socialised with Jeffrey Epstein, has told why their relationship ended. (AP PHOTO) Credit: AAP US President Donald Trump says he "never had the privilege" of visiting Jeffrey Epstein's island, saying he turned down an invitation from the convicted sex offender in what the president called a moment of good judgment. Trump's remarks were his latest effort to distance himself from the political furore over his administration's handling of files related to Epstein's case and renewed questions over his past relationship with the disgraced financier, who died by suicide in a New York jail in 2019. "I never had the privilege of going to his island, and I did turn it down," Trump told reporters during a trip to Scotland. "In one of my very good moments, I turned it down." Epstein owned a private island in the US Virgin Islands where he entertained prominent people from politics, business and entertainment. Prosecutors have alleged he used the compound to conceal the sex trafficking and abuse of under-age victims. Trump, who socialised with Epstein in the 1990s and early 2000s, also offered new insight into why their relationship ended. The US president said he cut ties after Epstein attempted to recruit staff who worked for Trump. "He hired help. And I said, 'Don't ever do that again.' He stole people that work for me," Trump said. "He did it again. And I threw him out of the place persona non grata." Last week, White House communications director Steven Cheung said Trump had cut ties with Epstein because he regarded him as a "creep." The White House has been under growing pressure from Trump's supporters and political opponents to release more information about the Justice Department's investigation into Epstein. After Attorney General Pam Bondi earlier this year promised to release additional materials related to possible Epstein clients and the circumstances surrounding his death, the Justice Department reversed course this month and issued a memo concluding there was no basis to continue investigating and no evidence of a client list. Those findings sparked an angry outcry from some of Trump's supporters who have long believed the government was covering up Epstein's ties to the rich and powerful. Trump's efforts to deflect attention from the case have so far faltered. On Monday, the president again called the story "a hoax." "It's a hoax that's been built up way beyond proportion," Trump said, saying Democrats controlled the Epstein files for several years and would have used them against him during the last presidential election if there was anything in them. Trump flew with Epstein aboard his plane at least six times, according to logs for flights spanning from 1991 through 2005. None of those trips were to Epstein's private island. Trump has denied ever being on the plane and has not been accused of any wrongdoing.

Club World Cup final: Cole Palmer stars as Chelsea thrash PSG 3-0

Cole Palmer scored two goals and made another as Chelsea stunned Paris Saint-Germain in the final of the Club World Cup, beating the European champions 3-0 at the MetLife Stadium to win the first edition of FIFA's new competition. PSG were the favourites for a game attended by Donald Trump after coming to the United States fresh from winning the UEFA Champions League and having destroyed Real Madrid 4-0 in the semi-finals. But having been three goals ahead midway through the first half in the semis, this time the roles were reversed as PSG found themselves 3-0 down by the break. Palmer opened the scoring midway through the first half and struck again to make it two on the half-hour mark, before taking advantage of passive defending to set up Joao Pedro for the third on 43 minutes. A bad day for PSG was summed up when Joao Neves was shown red following a VAR review four minutes from the end for pulling Marc Cucurella by the hair off the ball. Picture: Getty Images It was a scoreline that few could have predicted as Chelsea capped what has been a long but memorable season -- they are the first ever winners of the 32-team Club World Cup having also won the UEFA Conference League and finished fourth in the Premier League. They will also take away around $125 million in prize money, meaning the prospect of a drastically curtailed summer break before returning for next season will surely feel worth it. For PSG, meanwhile, the financial rewards are similar but there will be genuine disappointment at falling short of adding this title to their Champions League triumph and French league and cup double. Nevertheless, conquering Europe was always the main aim this season for Luis Enrique's team, who now have exactly a month to digest this and take a holiday before returning to action in the UEFA Super Cup against Tottenham Hotspur. There was a real sense of occasion at the MetLife Stadium, with the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline and with President Trump in attendance along with First Lady Melania Trump in a crowd of 81,118. There was even the first-ever half-time show at a FIFA tournament, adding a Super Bowl feel to a final played at the home of NFL sides the New York Giants and New York Jets. As for the football, for the second time in six weeks PSG found themselves involved in a final that quickly turned into a one-sided affair. The club claimed a historic 5-0 win over Inter Milan in the Champions League final, but here they were ripped apart by Chelsea on another hot afternoon. Palmer almost put Chelsea ahead inside the opening 10 minutes, before PSG should have scored at the other end only for Desire Doue to try to pass to Achraf Hakimi rather than shoot inside the box, allowing Cucurella to block. Cole Palmer lifts the FIFA Club World Cup trophy after Chelsea's stunning victory. Picture: Getty Images It was Chelsea who struck in the 22nd minute as Malo Gusto got the better of Nuno Mendes down the right before seeing his shot blocked by Lucas Beraldo. The ball came back to Gusto and he teed up Palmer to finish into the bottom-left corner. Palmer has been the face of Chelsea on billboards in the United States during the tournament and he lived up to his star billing by scoring again on the half-hour. Released on the right with PSG left-back Mendes out of position, Palmer advanced towards the box before stroking a low shot into the same corner. Joao Pedro played a part in the build-up to that goal and the Brazilian, signed during the tournament from Brighton, then got his name on the scoresheet to make it 3-0. Scorer of both goals against Fluminense in the semi-finals, he clipped a shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma after being supplied by Palmer. PSG had conceded a single goal in their previous eight matches and they never really looked like producing a comeback, even if Neves headed just wide in first-half stoppage time. Substitute Liam Delap almost got a fourth for Chelsea midway through the second half, before Neves was shown red to complete a bad day for PSG.

Bayern Munich and Arsenal battle for Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze

Bayern Munich will go head-to-head with Arsenal in the race to sign Eberechi Eze. Arsenal, who are due to announce the signing of Viktor Gyökeres imminently, remain desperate for the Crystal Palace star. Mikel Arteta sees him as the 'final piece in the jigsaw' in a new-look line-up that the Spaniard hopes will see the Gunners finally win the Premier League. But The Sun reports that Arsenal face a major battle to land Eze in the shape of the German champions. Bayern's manager Vincent Kompany wants to reunite Eze with former teammate Michael Olise, as he plots an all-out assault on the Champions League. Arsenal face a battle in the race to sign Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace. Picture: Getty Images Bayern have just lost Jamal Musiala to a broken leg and dislocated ankle and they have shortlisted Eze as they seek to strengthen their attack. The German giants missed out on Florian Wirtz to Liverpool. They have also lost both Leroy Sané and Thomas Müller. As a result they are also said to be exploring a deal for out-of-favour Chelsea attacker Christopher Nkunku. Eze has a £68m release clause and is attracting interest this summer after a stellar season in which he scored the winner for Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final. The 27-year-old scored 14 goals and provided 11 assists for Palace last season and also netted his first England goal in a 3-0 win over Latvia in March. With Arsenal yet to make an official bid for Eze, Bayern could swoop. Ruben Amorim decided 10 days ago that Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia should stay away from first team training. They were given extra time off to find new clubs – but as yet nothing has been finalised. * Morgan Gibbs-White has reported to Nottingham Forest for pre-season training despite heavy links to Tottenham in recent days. * Newcastle have submitted a club-record £69.5million bid for Hugo Ekitike. * Brighton striker Evan Ferguson has agreed a deal to join Italian side Roma. — The Sun
