A Brief Guide to All the Taika Waititi Projects We're Still Waiting For

Gizmodo18 hours ago
It's just part of Hollywood that projects will be announced with a lot of fanfare and then fade away, with suspects both usual (scheduling conflicts, creative differences, budget concerns) and unusual (global pandemics, industry-wide strikes) to blame. But certain creators seem to attach their names to movies or TV shows that never materialize with greater frequency—including Taika Waititi.
His diverse career includes writing, directing, producing, and acting (Our Flag Means Death forever), and he already has an Oscar on his shelf. So it's no surprise that he's seemingly being pulled in a lot of different directions and moves on to new endeavors faster than most. But since his TBD list is full of things we'd actually like to see one day, here's a reminder of the best sci-fi and fantasy stuff that's on it.
News broke this week that Waititi is attached to helm a new live-action take on the violent comic book character, previously seen in movies made in 1995 (with Sylvester Stallone) and 2012 (with Karl Urban). The Hollywood Reporter noted there's a script by Drew Pearce (Fall Guy; Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation) but no studio attached yet. According to the trade, 'sources say Pearce and Waititi both grew up with the books and are friends who have been trying to find a project to work on together for years.'
THR further notes that 'the pitch is said to take inspiration more from the comics than the previous screen iterations, leaning into the world-building and dark humor,' which sounds great, though this detail does not: 'The desire is to see the movie launch a Dredd universe that could be explored with additional movies and shows across various platforms.' Why though?
Probably just a fleeting dream at this point, given that this werewolf-focused sequel to What We Do in the Shadows (the movie) was being talked about before What We Do in the Shadows (the TV show) arrived. But the show ended late last year after six triumphant seasons, with many fans still wishing it could continue. Might We're Wolves emerge from the darkness after all?
Just a few weeks ago, we learned that Warner Bros.' long-teased Akira movie was being taken off the table. Waititi's name was one of many bandied about to direct when it was still in play, and he certainly seemed enthusiastic—although in 2019 he explained he'd had to step back from it due to his Marvel commitments. But just because Warner Bros. isn't going to tackle Akira doesn't mean the manga adaptation won't ever happen; another studio might well pick up the newly available rights. Maybe Waititi will circle back when and if that happens?
Picture it: summer, 2021. We received an intriguing update on the animated Flash Gordon movie Waititi had first teased in 2019. The game changed, and now it was going to be a live-action Flash Gordon movie! Even a few years later, it still seems like an ideal outlet for Waititi's irreverent style and bombastic approach to superhero action, but so far there's been no fresh momentum on this one.
In late 2021, Waititi teased another fascinating project: an adaptation of The Incal, Alejandro Jodorowsky and Jean Giraud's (aka Moebius) sci-fi masterpiece. 'The films and graphic novels of Alejandro Jodorowsky have influenced me and so many others for so long,' Waititi told the Hollywood Reporter at the time. 'I was stunned to be given the opportunity to bring his iconic characters to life.' We're not mad at it either, other than the fact that it hasn't happened yet.
In 2020, io9 had cause to run a post with the headline 'Oompa-Loompa Doom-Pa-Da-Dee-Tee, Get Pumped for Roald Dahl by Taika Waititi,' on the occasion of Waititi announcing two planned Netflix series set in the world of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Including one all about Oompa-Loompas! As we know, Netflix sunk a lot of dough into acquiring Dahl's story catalog a few years back, but hasn't done terribly much with the IP since; in the meantime, the Timothée Chalamet-starring Wonka movie, whose conception pre-dated the Netflix acquisition, sort of took over the cultural conversation on magical chocolate factories. Still, the streamer is still holding onto Dahl, so maybe Waititi will return to this one eventually.
This one's a whole galaxy bigger than just Waititi, because pinning down Lucasfilm's future big-screen plans has been no easy task since the sequel trilogy ended. But amid the sure things (The Mandalorian and Grogu, Ryan Gosling's Starfighter) and the handful of projects that seem to still be on track (like James Mangold's 'Dawn of the Jedi' movie), Waititi's long-teased Star Wars movie, which would reunite The Mandalorian season one star with the franchise, is one that's never been ruled out. We still have no idea if it will happen, though.
Which percolating Taika Waititi projects are you hoping actually materialize? Do you think Judge Dredd will move forward, or will it join these other titles in Waititi limbo? And will he ever make his Star Wars movie?

Wrestler Buff Bagwell Has His Right Leg Amputated Following '5-Year Journey Trying to Fix' His Body After a Car Accident

NEED TO KNOW Buff Bagwell's right leg was recently amputated after he was seriously injured in a car accident in August 2020 The World Champion Wrestling star had undergone "several surgeries" over the past five years, but his leg never healed Bagwell now hopes to return to wrestling following his amputation surgeryMarcus "Buff" Bagwell recently had his leg amputated following a 2020 car accident. In a video posted on YouTube on Friday, July 18, the World Champion Wrestling star, 55, revealed that he had an above-the-knee amputation on his right leg due to injuries he sustained in a car accident in August 2020. Joined by his fiancée Stacy Brown in the video, Bagwell recalled the incident, stating, 'I'd been drinking, but just a few beers … I'm going down the road with a Diet Coke, and I am gone … It was like a dream." 'I remember cars, seeing faces look at me like, 'What are you doing?' ... [and] somehow I got off the wrong exit and I ended up behind the mall, and somehow, that's where it all came to the end, where I drove through a men's and women's bathroom," he continued. Photos from the crash were then shown in the video. A brick building had collapsed, and Bagwell's vehicle could be seen destroyed. Bagwell said the impact of the crash caused the dashboard of his vehicle to hit him 'in my right patellar tendons," which ruined his kneecap. "That started this whole five-year journey of trying to fix my leg,' he further explained, also adding that no one else was hurt or died due to the accident. After the crash, Bagwell said he stayed in the hospital for 'several weeks' and had 39 to 40 surgeries for knee replacements, flap surgeries and extension-mechanism repairs. 'That led me into the deepest, darkest [alcohol] addiction I've ever been in,' he recalled. 'My leg wasn't healing, and so I was super depressed.' Bagwell said he then entered rehab for his drinking in August 2022. Shortly after that, he ran into more health complications, and he had one final right knee extensor mechanism repair surgery, but it 'got infected' and 'led to the amputation.' Despite his injuries, Bagwell credited recent times as 'the best years of my life," stating, "I'm not mad about it by no means." Bagwell also said in his video that he plans to eventually return to the ring following his surgery. "I'm gonna be able to run, and I'm going to be able to run better. I want to get back in the ring, hit the ropes, have a match," he said. "You don't have to give up with something like this ... I'm going to show the world that you can have just as good a life with or without a leg." Read the original article on People

THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS Early Reactions Praise Epic Visuals and Standout Performances — GeekTyrant

Marvel's highly anticipated reboot, The Fantastic Four: First Steps , has officially lifted its social media embargo ahead of Monday night's world premiere, and initial reactions are overwhelmingly positive. Early viewers are describing it as one of Marvel Studios' strongest releases yet, applauding both its spectacular visuals and stellar cast performances. Directed by Matt Shakman ( WandaVision , Game of Thrones ), the film has generated excitement primarily for capturing the heart and chemistry of Marvel's beloved First Family. Vanessa Kirby, playing Sue Storm, is already emerging as a fan favorite, with many praising her compelling and standout performance. However, not all feedback has been completely glowing. Some early reactions have pointed out issues with the story, labeling it as "simplistic" or even "nonsensical" at times. Yet despite these narrative critiques, it appears the film has successfully nailed its characters, breathing fresh life into iconic figures like Galactus and the Silver Surfer, who are reportedly primed to become instant fan favorites. Box office tracking reflects audience anticipation, projecting an impressive opening weekend ranging between $100 million and $110 million. This places the film comfortably ahead of recent Marvel outings like Thunderbolts ($74.3M) and Captain America: Brave New World ($88.8M), though it trails slightly behind DC's Superman ($125M). Marvel Studios is banking heavily on the success of Fantastic Four: First Steps as its final release of the year. Fan excitement continues to grow, especially with hints of a first look at Avengers: Doomsday potentially featured in a post-credits tease, further increasing anticipation for opening weekend. In addition to Kirby, the cast is stacked with talent, including Pedro Pascal ( The Last of Us , The Mandalorian ), Ebon Moss-Bachrach ( The Bear , The Punisher ), Joseph Quinn ( Stranger Things , Catherine the Great ), Ralph Ineson ( The Witch , The Green Knight ), Julia Garner ( Ozark , Inventing Anna ), Natasha Lyonne ( Russian Doll , Poker Face ), Paul Walter Hauser ( Richard Jewell , Black Bird ), Sarah Niles ( Ted Lasso , I May Destroy You ), and Mark Gatiss ( Sherlock , Doctor Who ). With the blue carpet premiere set for Monday night, excitement continues to build among fans eager to witness Marvel's latest spectacle on the big screen. The Fantastic Four: First Steps arrives in theaters on July 25.

LEGO Unleashes The Decepticons with New LEGO Icons TRANSFORMERS Soundwave Set — GeekTyrant

LEGO is back with another epic addition to its Transformers lineup, and this time, it's all about the bad guys. The LEGO Group has teamed up with Hasbro once again to bring fans the LEGO Icons Transformers Soundwave set, and it's a Decepticon dream come true. With 1,505 pieces, this build is a nostalgia bomb. The set recreates the classic G1 version of Soundwave in all his blocky, cassette-loving glory. He's fully posable, equipped with a working cassette bay, and you can flip him into his vintage cassette player mode without taking him apart. 'Recreate the fan-favorite Soundwave, the loyal lieutenant of the Decepticon leader Megatron along with his trusted companions Ravage and Laserbeak. Make Soundwave talk by pressing the play button to activate his voice and sound effects. Then convert Soundwave into cassette player mode without having to rebuild!' That play button activates specially recorded voice and sound effects, something brand-new for LEGO's Transformers line and a fun interactive twist that fans will appreciate. The set also includes two of Soundwave's iconic minions: Ravage and Laserbeak. Both convert into mini cassette tapes and fit neatly inside Soundwave's chest, just like the original toy. Toss in a laser blaster, rocket pod, and a display plaque with Soundwave's power stats, and this becomes the ultimate shelf trophy for Decepticon loyalists. The set drops August 1 for LEGO Insiders and opens up to everyone else on August 4th for 189.99.
