Boston Celtics reportedly tabled offer to veteran All-Star

USA Today2 days ago
On Thursday, July 17, the Boston Celtics missed out on Damian Lillard. The veteran guard signed with the Portland Trail Blazers. Lillard had been a free agent after the Milwaukee Bucks bought him out of his contract earlier this summer. His deal to return to Portland sees him earn $42 million over the next three years, and that's before the salary he's owed by the Bucks.
Given Lillard's deal with the Trail Blazers, it's easy to see why the Celtics struggled to place a competitive offer. Boston, after all, is currently trying to duck under the second luxury tax apron. Brad Stevens has already traded Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis to help the franchise reach its goal. Nevertheless, it would appear the Celtics did make an offer to Lillard during his limited time as a free agent.
"He was going to spend the year rehabbing his Achilles tear in the Portland area anyways," ESPN's Shams Charania said. "So returning to the Blazers franchise, even though he requested a trade just two years ago, was something he deeply cared about. And Boston, Minnesota, dozens of other teams had minimum and mid-level exception offers out to Damian Lillard in the last several weeks."
Lillard's fit in Boston would have been questionable at best. He needs the ball in his hands to be an effective member of the rotation. Furthermore, there's no telling what type of player he will be when he returns from his Achilles injury at nearly age-36. Still, the Celtics likely viewed Lillard as a low-cost, high-reward pickup.
Now, with Lillard off the table, Stevens must continue exploring ways to re-tool Boston's roster. After all, the aim is to get back into contention once Jayson Tatum returns to the rotation in the 2026-27 season, following his Achilles tendon injury in the 2025 playoffs.

Boston Celtics jersey history No. 27 - Jimmy Oliver (1993-94)

The Boston Celtics have had players suiting up in a total of 68 different jersey numbers (and have three others not part of any numerical series) since their founding at the dawn of the Basketball Association of America (BAA -- the league that would become today's NBA), worn by well over 500 players in the course of Celtics history. To commemorate the players who wore those numbers, Celtics Wire is covering the entire history of jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team. With 25 of those jerseys now retired to honor some of the greatest Celtics to wear those jerseys, there is a lot of history to cover. And for today's article, we will continue with the seventh of 13 people to wear the No. 27, Boston guard alum Jimmy Oliver. After ending his college career at Purdue, Oliver was picked up with the 39th overall selection of the 1991 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Menifee, Arkansas native played his first season in the league with the Cavs, then spent time in other leagues before signing with the Celtics in 1993. His stay with the team would span a single season, coming to an end when he signed with the Sacramento Kings in 1994. During his time suiting up for the Celtics, Oliver wore only jersey No. 27 and put up 4.9 points and 1.0 rebounds per game. All stats and data courtesy of Basketball Reference.

What does it mean to be the head coach of the Boston Celtics?

What does it mean to be the head coach of the Boston Celtics? With famous greats like Red Auerbach, Bill Russell, Tommy Heinsohn, Bill Fitch, K.C. Jones, and Doc Rivers having held such a post to name just some of the legendary names helming the Celtics over the years, it is a certain level of rarified air to even be in the same conversation with names like these. And now current Boston head coach Joe Mazzulla is among them with a title to his name as coach of the Celtics, so the Rhode Island native knows something about the answer to that question. The man himself took a stab at answering it on a recent episode from fellow New England sports legend Julian Edelman's "Games with Names" podcast, Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what Mazzulla had to say about what it means to coach the Celtics.

NBA Rumors: Damian Lillard Hated Bucks Tenure, Preferred Trade From Portland To Different Team

A new report from a pair of Portland Trail Blazers insiders claims Damian Lillard never wanted to be traded to the Milwaukee Bucks. And he preferred being dealt to a different Eastern Conference club two years ago. The future Hall of Famer hit free agency for the first time in his career this summer. While he likely will miss all of the 2025-26 NBA season, he had many suitors, including contenders, around the league. Yet, the nine-time All-Star stunned NBA observers when he chose to return to the franchise where he became a superstar, the Trail Blazers. Damian Lillard stats (2024-25): 24.9 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 7.1 APG, 1.2 SPG, 38% 3PT In a new edition of the Blazers Focused podcast, Trail Blazers insiders Aaron Fentress and Craig Birnbach explained that Lillard's deep love for his children played a massive role in his decision. Despite the Blazers being a team that will fight for a play-in spot in upcoming seasons, and other high-profile point guards like Jrue Holiday on the roster, Lillard preferred to be close to his children and back in a city he loves. However, there was another interesting bit of intelligence that came out of the conversation. 'Also, he was not happy in Milwaukee,' Fentress said. 'He didn't want to go there in the first place; he wanted to go to Miami. He relented and went to Milwaukee because his agent talked him into it.' Damian Lillard contract: Three years, $70 million The NBA great hit the open market this offseason after Milwaukee shockingly bout out the rest of his contract. That decision was made so they could add Indiana Pacers star Myles Turner to the roster and not have a massive luxury tax bill. Lillard will be paid $22.6 million annually by the Bucks over the next five years. He signed a three-year deal worth $70 million with Portland last week.
