A village in Odisha's Balasore district stood still in mourning on Tuesday as the body of a 20-year-old college student—who had accused her professor of sexual harassment and later attempted suicide by setting herself ablaze—returned home for the last time.Declared dead at AIIMS Bhubaneswar on Monday night after battling severe burn injuries for nearly three days, the second-year student's cremation drew waves of emotion, questions, and anger.Wrapped in white and carried in a coffin, the young woman was brought back to the same streets where she once taught self-defence, performed on stage, and helped organise community outreach activities.'"She had gone to college after Bahuda Yatra and said she would return soon. She promised. But she came back... like this," her mother sobbed, while talking to TOI.Her father, employed at a local government-run women's college, stood quietly beside her. "My daughter was strong. If the investigation had been done properly from the beginning, maybe this wouldn't have happened," he told the news outlet. As the funeral procession wound through the village, locals watched in disbelief, some crying silently, others shouting slogans praising her bravery. 'She spoke up when many would have stayed silent,' one mourner told TOI. 'She deserved support, not silence.'Political leaders, including Balasore MP Pratap Sarangi and several local MLAs, joined the procession along with district officials. The heavy police presence underscored both the sensitivity of the case and the public scrutiny it has drawn. What stung most for those who knew her was the feeling that her courage had gone unheard. Despite her complaints, no meaningful action was taken in time."Why did no one help her? Why was her voice ignored?" a neighbour, Sunil Kar also told TOI. "She dared to speak. But her courage was met with silence."Her brother, holding back tears, added, "No matter how much politics is played now or how loudly people demand justice, what difference will it make?"As the funeral pyre was lit, the crowd fell silent.

Trump claims five jets were shot down in India-Pakistan skirmish

TOI correspondent from Washington : US President Donald Trump on Friday claimed that up to five fighter jets were shot down during the recent India-Pakistan conflict, triggering a social media dogfight between partisans over which country came up trumps in the brief war. At a White House dinner with Republican lawmakers, Trump, who is under political siege domestically over the Epstein tapes, resorted to his oft-repeated claims about being a global peacemaker, citing his role in defusing the India-Pakistan clash. "We stopped a lot of wars. And these were serious. India and Pakistan, that was going on. Planes were being shot out of there. I think four-five jets, maybe were shot down, actually, Trump said, without identifying which country lost the jets or the basis for his claims. "... they were (going) back and forth, and it was getting bigger and bigger, and we got it solved through trade. We said.. We're not making a trade deal if you're going to be throwing around weapons, and maybe nuclear weapons," Trump asserted in claims that have been refuted by New Delhi. Trump also gave a nuclear dimension to the conflict although most analysts say the spat came nowhere near breaching a nuclear threshold. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? How to get Internet without paying a subscription? Techno Mag Learn More Undo While Pakistanis gloated under the assumption that Trump meant five Indian jets were shot down, India partisans maintained that the US President did not specify which country the fighter planes belonged to and Pakistan too had lost jets in the skirmish. However, top Indian military officials have acknowledged lately that they lost an unspecified number of jets in the initial skirmish, suggesting that they were operating below a certain political threshold before being given a free hand. This resulted in a broader response that put several Pakistani bases and airfields out of commission before the US stepped in to save it. In a recent report, the Economist, citing unnamed foreign military officials, claimed five Indian aircraft were destroyed, including at least one Rafale. The report also said Indian military officials are starting to indicate that the losses may have stemmed from Indian errors rather than technological deficiencies. "Early reports suggested that the decisive factor was the superiority of Pakistan's Chinese-made j-10 fighters and its pl-15 air-to-air missiles. India does appear to have underestimated those. And China may have also tipped the balance by providing Pakistan with early warning and real-time targeting data," the report said. But given India's success later on in the fight, the journal added, the bigger problem might have been how India used its own fighters on the first night of the brief war. It cited an Indian defense attache in Jakarta who told a seminar earlier this month that India lost some aircraft only because its political leadership had ordered its air force not to hit Pakistan's air defences. Instead, they targeted only militant sites on the first day. 'After the loss, we changed our tactics and we went for their military installations,' the attache, Captain Shiv Kumar, was quoted as saying. Most analysts now say that after adopting an initial posture of only hitting terrorist compounds in response to the Pahalgam attack, New Delhi turned it around by lifting the constraints on its military after the setback in the air.

Love, lies & loot: Bengaluru man trapped, robbed after being lured on gay dating app

A 31-year-old man's attempt to connect on a gay dating app turned into a harrowing experience after he was lured, confined, and robbed by a known rowdy-sheeter in the city. Police have arrested two suspects in the case, reported TOI. The victim, Sahil (name changed), a private company employee from north Bengaluru, had downloaded the dating app after browsing LGBTQ platforms online. The app charged a minimal fee of ₹1 for a three-day pass. Within a day, he was contacted by a user named "Sufi", who revealed his face over a video call and asked Sahil to share his phone number for further conversation, as per the TOI report. Sufi led Sahil to a shed near a paying guest accommodation in Vyalikaval Layout. Soon after they entered, a man claiming to be the shed's owner stormed in and accused Sahil of engaging in illegal activity. He snatched Sahil's phone while another man joined in and began assaulting him. Sufi, who had initiated the meeting, stood by as the attack unfolded. When Sahil tried to escape, Sufi restrained him. It was then that Sahil realised Sufi was part of the group. The attackers demanded access to his digital wallet and threatened to kill him if he refused. Under duress, Sahil transferred ₹1,000. They further forced him to call friends and extract another ₹2,260 before allowing him to leave. Distressed and fearing social stigma, Sahil initially chose not to report the incident. On July 9, he approached the police and filed a complaint. Based on his report, police arrested 26-year-old Sufiyan alias Sufi and his 24-year-old accomplice Mateen. A third suspect is absconding. Live Events Investigators revealed that Sufiyan has a criminal background, including an attempted murder charge, and is known for using dating apps to target and extort individuals. The case has been registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Section 309 (robbery).

After a preliminary inquiry, police registered a case, now including murder. According to officers, 'Based on the inquest and evidence collected, we registered a case under relevant sections, including murder.' Live Events Investigators noticed that Karan's wife, who had appeared panicked at the hospital, gave statements that didn't completely add up. Forensic and circumstantial evidence also pointed to the possibility that the electrocution might not have been accidental. The police have now detained both the wife and her brother for questioning. Love affair angle under probe As per a TOI report, a police source revealed that Karan allegedly suspected his wife of having an extramarital affair. This angle is now being looked into as a possible motive behind the suspected murder. However, the police are also exploring other motives. Investigations are ongoing, and more details are expected to emerge in the coming days. Inputs from TOI
