Back to where it all began as Lanarkshire promoter's STREETrave returns to Pavilion Festival

Daily Record30-04-2025
Lanarkshire dance music mogul Ricky Magowan cast his mind back more than 35 years to where it all began as the stages and marquees are built for this bank holiday weekend's Pavilion Festival. The Motherwell man could never have imagined when he first took his STREETrave dance music club night to Ayr Pavilion, that decades later the brand would still be going strong and he would be co-founder of an outdoor festival that takes place almost in the back garden of the legendary Pavilion. STREETrave, which spawned the Colours organisation – the biggest dance music promoters in Scotland who are responsible for bringing the biggest DJs and EDM artists to Scotland – will take the reins at the Pavilion Festival on the Low Green next to Ayr beach with the old venue in the background, this Sunday, May 4. Ricky, who started off as a graphic designer producing flyers for events, first brought his fledgling STREETrave brand to Ayr back in 1989 when the rave music phenomenon was still in its infancy. They made Ayr Pavilion its spiritual home in Scotland and brought ground-breaking acts from across the scene north of the border. Since those early days, Ayrshire has held a special place in Ricky's heart. Audaciously STREETrave went on to hold the huge all-night Eurodance rave within Prestwick Airport at Hogmanay 1992, they followed up with two more there when The Prodigy were amongst the acts, which have since gone down in folklore. Over three decades have passed since then, and his music promotion business has gone on to bring almost every megastar in the dance music world to Scotland. This weekend, it's back to Ayr in the shadow of the place it all began. It will be the third year for the growing festival, which this year features the main stage in a 5,000 capacity "big top". Ricky said: 'Who would have thought when we first put on a party at Ayr Pavilion in 1989, that we would be back 36 years later with a three-day festival - and a massive big top! "The weekend is shaping up to be an absolute belter with sunshine and blue skies forecast for all three days, it going to be something special. With five stages on Sunday there's plenty to choose from. And, despite the forecast of favourable weather, all arenas are covered so there's no fear of a washout dampening the enthusiasm of the crowd. On Sunday, the Electric Brae main stage will see the likes of Happy Mondays, Danny Rampling and Shades of Rhythm keep the crowds moving, while there will also be a STREETrave Classical set for discerning afficionados. The aptly named Rave Cave stage will offer sounds from former Prodigy member Leeroy Thornhill, as well as homegrown international DJ stars and producers Mark Sherry and David Forbes. The latter was a regular on the decks at Ayr Pavilion during the 90s, and now produces tracks included in the sets of the world's biggest hitters. The late Mallorca Lee's son Oshy will also bring the sound of Ultrasonic to the cave, which is sure to be emotional. The three-day event will kick off on Friday with James and Starsailor as the biggest crowd-pullers on the Electric Brae stage, one to look out for on the Breakthrough stage are the band Hippy. Then on Saturday, Ayr native Ewan McVicar will be joined by Ben Hemsley and a host of others. The estate is known for its private hospitality and previously hosted Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and family while filming for World War Z which took place in Glasgow in August 2011. Pitt and family stayed in the 16th century manor at Carnell and rented a train to take them from Glasgow to the estate. While in England, Mr Vance took time to meet with Foreign Secretary David Lammy in Kent where bilateral talks were held at Chevening House and the pair engaged in carp fishing. The Vice President's visit takes place just weeks after US President Donald Trump spent five days in Scotland at the end of July. Trump hosted Prime Minister Keir Starmer and First Minister John Swinney on his visit which saw him play golf at his Turnberry resort on the Ayrshire coast. During his visit, Trump also presented a gift to Ms Eastwood which the estate shared a photograph of on social media. The Carnell Estates were contacted for comment. Kaiser Chiefs were 'glad something terrible happened' to their Glastonbury set

The Kaiser Chiefs' Glastonbury 2025 performance was a highlight for many at Worthy Farm, but 'something terrible happened'. As the Ruby hitmakers opened the Pyramid Stage for day two of the festival (Saturday, June 27), complaints flooded social media. It turned out the BBC had no plans to air the set, which marked the iconic band's 20th anniversary. Lead singer Ricky Wilson saw the outcry but admitted it doesn't feel like a Kaiser Chiefs show when everything is going right. 'We're most comfortable when things are going wrong, even like when we were the Glastonbury and it was, like, my favourite show ever,' the 47-year-old musician shared. Speaking on Radio X with Dan O'Connell, Ricky continued: 'Best day. I loved it. The crowd turned up. There was like 100,000 people in the field. Amazing. 'Then they said it wasn't on iPlayer. And I was like, 'Well, that's really rubbish.' 'I'm glad something terrible happened, because it wouldn't be the Kaiser Chiefs if it all went to plan.' He added: 'The thing is, bands that everything goes really well, then just to suddenly disappear. But bands that go up and down have a need to fight back all the time. 'It's weird, because we're very happy being the underdogs.' Those underdogs were marking two decades since the release of their debut album, Employment, which was the fourth best-selling album that year. The record produced iconic hits like Oh My God, I Predict a Riot, and Everyday I Love You Less and Less. It was shortlisted — as Ricky said it 'came second' — for the Mercury Prize that year but the singer revealed he couldn't appreciate the success at the time. 'It was weird,' he shared. 'We knew it was going really well; you can't really compute it when you're so tired. 'And I think any new band who aren't feeling like on the verge of death with tiredness, you're not doing it properly!' While the set did appear on iPlayer later, fans were furious it wasn't aired live and were particularly vocal about it on X at the time. Ninety_88 questioned: 'How can you put Kaiser Chiefs on to open on a Saturday and not televise it?' More Trending 'BBC iPlayer stating they are live, when in actual fact it's 2 presenters talking and showing the acts from last night, when we have all tuned in to watch Kaiser Chiefs who are actually live on stage now! What a let down,' added melcastle1875. The I Predict A Riot hitmakers even addressed the drama on their Instagram, writing: 'Apologies to everyone who attempted to tune in yesterday, we appreciate you wanting to join the party from home alongside the almost one hundred thousand of you who filled the field! Such a lovely crowd!' Kaiser Chiefs' Glastonbury set has since been removed from iPlayer, along with other 2025 sets. Got a story?
