Lion City Sailors miss out on continental glory after last-gasp defeat to UAE's Sharjah in Bishan final

Malay Mail19-05-2025
SINGAPORE, May 18 – The Lion City Sailors fell just short of making history yesterday after losing 2-1 to United Arab Emirates side Sharjah in the AFC Champions League Two final at Bishan Stadium.
Marcus Meloni's dramatic goal in the seventh minute of stoppage time clinched the win for Sharjah, denying the Sailors a chance to become the first Singapore club to win a continental title.
'Our guys did a tremendous job, especially after going 1-0 down. It was a shame that we [conceded] a very late 2-1 goal, but I have nothing to say except that I am very, very proud of my boys,' Sailors head coach Aleksandar Rankovic was quoted telling CNA.
The Sailors had reached the final after defeating Sydney FC 2-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals and overcoming Japan's Sanfrecce Hiroshima in the quarter-finals, thanks to a ruling that overturned their first-leg loss.
Firas Ben Larbi gave the visitors the lead in the 74th minute before Maxime Lestienne equalised in stoppage time, sending the home crowd of 9,737 into raptures.
Despite dominating possession, Sharjah had two early goals ruled out for offside, while the Sailors came close through Diogo Costa, who struck the post in the first half.
Sharjah, who are currently second in the UAE Pro League, secured their spot in the final after edging Saudi Arabia's Al-Taawoun 2-1 on aggregate.
Originally slated for Jalan Besar Stadium, the final was moved to Bishan Stadium after Sharjah raised concerns about the venue, prompting capacity upgrades to accommodate around 10,000 fans.
The prestigious match could not be hosted in the National Stadium, as it was already booked for Lady Gaga's Asian exclusive tour.
The Sailors' run marked the furthest any Singaporean club has progressed since 2018, when Home United, their predecessor, reached the inter-zone semi-finals of the AFC Cup.

Amorim backs Sesko to shine at Manchester United, ready for Arsenal challenge

LONDON, Aug 16 — Ruben Amorim has backed Benjamin Sesko to torment Premier League defenders saying Manchester United's new striker is ready to face Arsenal in their top-flight opener tomorrow. Sesko joined United from RB Leipzig in a deal worth up to £73.7 million (RM421 million) last Saturday. Armed with the predatory instincts and physical stature, the 22-year-old Slovenian will spearhead Amorim's bid to revitalise United after their worst season since 1973-74. Sesko could join fellow United new-boys Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo in Amorim's overhauled attack, starting with Arsenal's visit to Old Trafford this weekend. 'He can play different types of football,' Amorim told reporters on Friday. 'He is going to learn but he has a great potential and I can see Ben being a striker for Manchester United for a lot of years. 'That's why we paid so much money to have a striker that will have his history in our club.' Asked if Sesko could start against Arsenal, the United boss said: 'We didn't have a lot of time but he's ready. 'Physically, he's ready. That is a big component in our league. Then, he's really smart. Every detail that he asks, he's a guy that is always thinking. 'He spends all afternoon here working on his fitness, so he's ready to play. We will see if he's going to start.' Sesko scored 21 goals for German side Leipzig last term and has made a good first impression on Amorim at United's new-look Carrington training complex. 'He's one guy who stays here, has lunch, and goes to the medical department, does the stretching,' he said. 'He is always thinking about football. He's really obsessed about that and that is a good thing because you don't have to think about that aspect with that young guy. 'I don't need to tell Ben, 'Ben, this is Manchester United, a lot of pressure, you have to perform, you need to be ready for the physicality, we need to be ready, every game is like do or die'. Sesko's arrival in Manchester has raised fresh questions over the future of United striker Rasmus Hojlund. The 22-year-old Denmark international has been strongly linked with an exit, just two years on from joining from Atalanta. Hojlund said on United's pre-season tour that he wants to stay at United, but reports of a potential move to AC Milan persist. 'He is one more option,' Amorim said. 'We will see. We are focused on this game and Rasmus is still our player.' — AFP

Leipzig sign striker Romulo as Sesko's replacement

Romulo has signed with Leipzig until 2030 for a reported fee of €25 million including bonuses. (Reuters pic) BERLIN : RB Leipzig today announced the signing of Brazilian striker Romulo from Turkish side Goztepe to replace Benjamin Sesko, who has left for Manchester United. Romulo, 23, has signed until 2030 for a reported fee of €25 million including bonuses. Leipzig badly needed a forward after Sesko's big-money move to United. The Slovenian, 22, reportedly cost United €85 million. Romulo scored 13 times and laid on nine assists in 29 league matches last campaign. Leipzig finished seventh last season, missing out on European football for the first time in the Bundesliga top flight, and have undergone a rebuild in Jurgen Klopp's first off-season as Red Bull's global head of football. The club have signed several promising youngsters ahead of next weekend's Bundesliga kickoff, including winger Johan Bakayoko and midfielder Arthur Vermeeren. They also have a new manager, Ole Werner.

Chelsea hunt for new central defender as Colwill will be out long time for ACL injury

LONDON, Aug 15 — Chelsea are weighing up their options to address a defensive gap after centre back Levi Colwill suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, manager Enzo Maresca said ahead of their opening Premier League match against Crystal Palace on Sunday. Colwill picked up the injury in training and has undergone successful surgery, with the 22-year-old England international expected to miss much of the new season. It typically takes some six to nine months for a player to recover from an ACL injury and return to action, leaving Chelsea without a key figure in their backline. 'He is okay but aware that he has to be a long time out,' Maresca told reporters on Friday. 'It's a big loss for us. He was so important for us last season. We are able to create chances and attack in the right way if we are able to build in the right way. Levi was a huge part of that. 'The club know exactly what I am thinking. I think we need a central defender, but we are also looking for an internal solution.' Chelsea are looking to build on last season's success after finishing fourth in the Premier League and winning the Club World Cup by beating European champions Paris St Germain in July. With the close-season transfer window closing on September 1 for Premier League clubs, Maresca was not ruling out further incomings at Stamford Bridge. The West London club have been active in the transfer market, signing Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens, Jorrel Hato, Liam Delap, Estevao Willian, among others. 'We have a fantastic squad. We are happy with the squad we have, no doubt. When the transfer window is open, anything can happen,' the Italian, who will enter his second season at Chelsea, said. 'We are a better team compared to one year ago because we worked together every day for one season.' Maresca was wary of Palace, who stunned Manchester City to win the FA Cup in May and reigning Premier League champions Liverpool in the FA Community Shield earlier this month. 'Very difficult. They beat in two finals probably the two best teams in England over the last 10 or 15 years,' he said. — Reuters
