France praises Iraq's stability, vows continued security support
Ambassador Durel stated that despite regional tensions, Iraq is living through an 'important phase of stability' thanks to the government's efforts. He emphasized that Iraq's security and defense are a 'priority for France,' which continues its presence through the International Coalition and on a bilateral level, especially in training and armament.
'France is always ready to meet Iraq's need for equipment, and we continue to work to support Iraqis in preserving their country's sovereignty, including its airspace,' Durel said.
The ambassador also highlighted growing economic and cultural ties, including efforts to link the French and Iraqi private sectors and the recent success of the Iraqi film Kingdom of Reeds by director Hassan Hadi at the Cannes Film Festival. He urged continued dialogue between federal authorities and the Kurdistan Region to overcome challenges, reaffirming France's commitment to strengthening its partnership with Iraq at this 'pivotal moment' in its history.

Iraqi PM inspects Baghdad Forest Project: 500,000 tons of waste removed
Shafaq News – Baghdad Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani conducted a field visit on Saturday to the Baghdad Sustainable Forest Project, revealing that half a million tons of waste have already been removed from the site. Launched in December, the initiative aims to transform more than 12 million square meters of the former al-Rasheed Military Camp into a sprawling ecological and recreational zone. Planned features include an artificial lake, green spaces, walking paths, sports facilities, restaurants, wellness centers, and a hotel, according to a statement from al-Sudani's media office. During the visit, al-Sudani ordered full soil decontamination and the removal of encroachments and industrial activity, while urging authorities to provide resettlement options for displaced families. More than 500,000 tons of accumulated waste have already been cleared—a step the prime minister described as vital to easing congestion and improving Baghdad's air quality. The project comes amid growing alarm over Iraq's declining green cover. Environmental studies show vegetation has dropped from nearly 50% in the past decades to just 17% today, with forests covering less than 2% of the country's land. Rapid urbanization, climate change, and years of weak enforcement have driven widespread desertification and farmland loss. Experts say projects like the Baghdad Forest are critical to restoring Iraq's ecological balance —and provide much-needed environmental and social relief in densely populated areas.

'Both sides emphasized the urgent need for the federal government to promptly send the Kurdistan Region's salaries and financial entitlements, and to resume oil exports via the Turkish port of Ceyhan without further delay,' read a statement from the KRG. Iraq's Council of Ministers on Thursday approved a new financial agreement with the KRG, paving the way for the resumption of salary payments to the Region's public employees and the restart of Kurdish oil exports, which have been suspended for more than two years. The US State Department said on Saturday that the resolution of Erbil-Baghdad tensions over oil exports and finances would signal that the Iraqi government is committed to creating a suitable investment environment. During the meeting, Fagin 'reaffirmed the United States' firm support for a strong, stable, and federal Kurdistan Region. Prime Minister Barzani expressed his gratitude for Washington's continued commitment and partnership,' the statement said. In recent weeks, oil fields and energy infrastructure in the Kurdistan Region have come under drone attacks, which stopped after Erbil and Baghdad announced their new agreement. Barzani and Fagin strongly condemned the attacks and called 'for an immediate end to these acts of sabotage,' according to the Kurdish statement. They also discussed the formation of Kurdistan Region's next cabinet. Although parliamentary elections were held on October 20, 2024, negotiations between the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), of which Barzani is a member, and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) on forming a power-sharing government have dragged on for nine months. The parliament has convened only once in that time. Barzani and Fagin both noted the importance of forming the cabinet before Iraq's parliamentary elections set for November 11.
