Having incorporated nifty wheels during service by way of a brunch trolley buffet, Summer Hill's chef-owner Anthony Yeoh transformed the way buffets are done. Servings are made smaller and available upon request, which allows for zero-waste, portion control as well as freshly cooked creations that channel Yeoh's take on French cooking.
You start off with bright and colourful sides, from olive and artichoke tapenade to a healthy smattering of various greens like roasted eggplant, chickpea salad, marinated fennel and grilled peppers. All of which are made to remain and join the mains that follow after. Of course, not before an intoxicating palate cleanse through a generous plate of fresh clams simply cooked in white wine, garlic and tomatoes. As far as the mains go: a halibut that is well steeped in the heady notes of olives and capers; a roast pork nicoise that will delight meat lovers with its crackling skin; and grilled lamb ribs, slathered in spices and best enjoyed with the aforementioned sides.
In case the sweets on the table (an olive oil cake and a cherry frangipane tart) haven't quite filled the brief, leave it to Summer Hill's build-your-own snow cones to do just that. All you can eat, of course.

Akira Back's Saturday brunch club is a great way to experience the best of the restaurant's unique approach to modern Japanese cuisine with a Korean flair—starting with classic staples such as the iconic Tuna and Mushroom Pizza. With ultra-thin slices of fresh tuna and mushroom atop a light, crunchy baked tortilla, it's easy to understand why this scrumptious dish is known globally.
Fresh harvest from Japan is showcased in the free-flow sashimi, nigiri and maki rolls—of which the Red Dragon with crab meat, shrimp tempura and spicy tuna is a highlight. As for hot dishes, look forward to five savoury creations. Owing to its location within the sunbathed—and yet, air-conditioned—Arcade @ The Capitol Kempinski, French-Asian bistro The Masses offers the best of both worlds. Helmed by chef Dylan Ong, the restaurant's fare is marked by fresh ingredients and refined flavours—preserving a French core with Asian flair.
The restaurant's communal, farm-style Sunday brunch strikes a fine chord between rustic and luxurious dining, starting the meal with freshly-shucked Irish & French oysters alongside an assortment of appetisers made for easy grazing. A platter of cold cuts arrives laden with pork and chicken liver pâté, smoked salmon rillette, Parma ham and hot smoked mackerel; while the fresh Haricot Vert Bean Salad puts French green beans and pickled French strawberries front and center. Simplicity seems to be at the heart of the mains, from a creamy scrambled egg elevated with generous shavings of black truffle to a crisp yet succulent chicken leg prepared over 36 hours and served with velvety jus. If you're in the mood to indulge, opt for Prosecco and wine on tap—if only to pair with the picture perfect French strawberry tart which closes out the meal, laden with Chantilly and rhubarb jam for a memorable sweet ending.

Food Picks: Hearty French cooking at La Table D'Emma
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox SINGAPORE – On the day I visit La Table D'Emma, the ice-cream machine is broken. Workers come in towards the end of service to tinker around with the air-conditioning vents, which ostensibly also require some tender loving care. The kitchen, perennially short-staffed, is running on a skeleton crew. 'Just what I needed – more drama,' jokes chef Michael Muller, a kitchen veteran who meets whatever curveballs restaurant life flings at him with dry sanguinity. His response to the staff shortage has been to scale down the menu to focus on the few French dishes he does best at the restaurant, which opened in April 2024 and is named after his wife. One staple that remains, however, is the warm hospitality the restaurant continues to dish out. It is hard not to feel welcome when the chef shakes your hand like he means it and sets down a piping hot crock of French onion soup ($26++) covered in a golden dome just begging to be shattered for the love of Instagram. The other soup option equally invites interaction: a mushroom 'cappuccino' that has to be assembled by pouring shiitake broth into a bowl of mushroom foam ($22++). Do not be put off by its frothy creaminess – it tastes far more delicate than it looks. The creative presentation is a nice touch, but this is not a restaurant that needs to rely on visual gimmicks. It prides itself on unpretentious cooking that honours tradition, but not too rigidly. The Non-Classic Bouillabaisse ($44++), for instance, is served in a pan instead of a pot, soup and ingredients combined only at the table. This gives the prawns, squid and fish some time to brown, acquiring an added dimension of flavour before the saffron broth is tipped in. Another standout seafood dish is the French raviole ($42++), stuffed with scallop mousse and served in a sizzling pan, a glistening lobster tail tossed in for good measure. Everything is blanketed in a tarragon-infused lobster sauce so rich and robust, I start hoarding pieces of bread meant to accompany other dishes, just to have something to sop up every last drop. And to end: Kaya Mon Amour ($16++), his version of kaya toast, made with Kougelopf, housemade gula melaka and pandan mousseline cream – a delectable tribute to his current home.

Seoul cracks down on taxis overcharging foreign tourists

SEOUL - The Seoul municipal government announced on Aug 6 that it would launch a 100-day special crackdown on cab drivers' unfair treatment of overseas tourists. The initiative will focus on illegal taxi activities such as overcharging, demanding tips , refusing to pick passengers up for short rides, and other inconveniences experienced by many overseas tourists when hailing taxis here. The crackdown will take place in airports as well as tourist attractions in Seoul, such as the Myeong-dong shopping district. In the capital's downtown, Seoul Metropolitan Government civil servants will penalise taxis that refuse to take overseas tourists on short trips; taxis that wait for foreign customers to demand prices above standard rates; and taxis that overcharge tourists at night. The 100-day crackdown is designed to 'rectify illegal taxi activities ahead of the peak tourism season in South Korea,' according to Mr Yeo Jang-kwon, head of the transportation office of the Seoul Metropolitan Government. The initiative will be in line with efforts by Seoul this year to bust 139 cases of overcharging at airports near Seoul, and 109 cases of taxi drivers refusing to accept foreign national passengers for short rides, as of the end of June. The regular crackdown has taken place since 2015. According to Seoul, visitors to Korea can also report taxi-related issues via card-sized survey slips available at Incheon Airport and Gimpo Airport. Cooking up success abroad
FOR chef Jimmy Lim, the proudest moment was when he was awarded three Michelin stars for his restaurant JL Studio in Taiwan – the first Singaporean to win that accolade for serving his own interpretation of food from the city-state. It was perhaps the one moment that sealed his pride as a Singaporean, he says in BT Lifestyle's spotlight this week on locals who have made good overseas. In light of SG60, we speak to several Singaporean chefs who have earned their stripes in Michelin-starred restaurants from Norway to Hong Kong, who epitomise the notion that you can take a Singaporean out of Singapore, but you can't take Singapore out of them. Chefs sharing their stories include Mathew Leong of three-Michelin-starred Re-Naa in Norway and Aven Lau of the one-starred Epure. And while their stories differ, their hearts remain at home. Beyond the food and beverage arena, we meet Daren Tang, the first Singaporean to head a UN agency.
