Typhoon Danas makes landfall in Taiwan, thousands evacuated
The storm struck land near the town of Budai in Chiayi county at about 11.40pm local time, with maximum sustained winds of 144kmh the weather agency said.
Danas was expected to sweep northwards along Taiwan's west coast overnight, according to the Central Weather Administration's latest advisory.
At least 28 people have been treated for minor injuries, according to the National Fire Agency.
Danas dumped more than 500mm of rain across southern Taiwan over the weekend, it said.
Most of the nearly 3,000 evacuated from their homes lived in mountainous areas around the southern port city of Kaohsiung, firefighters said.
At least 10 landslides were recorded and 49 areas flooded, but the water has since receded, it added.

SEOUL: More than 5,000 people in South Korea have been forced into shelters as heavy rain pounded parts of the country for a third day, with the deluge killing at least four people and destroying property and infrastructure, the safety ministry said on Friday (Jul 18). Torrential rain warnings remain in effect for most of the country's western and southern regions and the weather service has advised extreme caution against landslides and flooding through Saturday. Some parts in the south including the city of Gwangju were hit by record precipitation of more than 400mm in the past 24 hours as of early on Friday, the safety ministry said. Four people have died and one remained missing, it said. Two were trapped in cars on flooded roads and another died in a basement under flood water in the central South Chungcheong province, it said. A driver was also killed after a 10m-high roadside wall collapsed on top of a moving vehicle on Wednesday in Osan, some 44km south of Seoul, fire agency officials said. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, who has been vocal about stepping up the government's role in disaster prevention and response, said while natural disasters were hard to prevent, more can be done to anticipate damage and warn the public. "I see there were cases where casualties occurred because of a poor response when the situation was reasonably predictable," he said at an emergency meeting on the weather on Friday, calling for all available resources to be deployed.

Rivers in southwest China breach warning levels, with thousands evacuated
BEIJING: The levels of 25 rivers in southwestern China exceeded safe levels on Thursday (Jul 10), state media said, after more than 10,000 people were evacuated as the remnants of former typhoon Danas converged with East Asian monsoon rains. Extreme rainfall and severe flooding, which meteorologists link to climate change, increasingly pose major challenges as they threaten to overwhelm ageing flood defences, displace millions and wreak havoc on a US$2.8 trillion agricultural sector. Heavy rains also hit the capital, Beijing, with one area in the sprawling Chaoyang district receiving 68.2mm of rain in a single hour on Thursday morning, the state-run Beijing Daily said. Ten southwestern rivers, including the Longyan, which flows through the densely populated region of Chongqing, could burst their embankments and levees at any time, broadcaster CCTV warned, citing the water resources ministry. The remaining 15 had exceeded levels at which they could burst their banks, but posed less of a risk, it added. More than 24 hours of torrential rain took levels in the Chishui River of Guizhou province to their highest since records began in 1953, the broadcaster said, while the Xiaocao River in Sichuan province stood at its highest in 29 years. More than 10,000 people were evacuated on Wednesday from cities in the provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan, state media said, as the East Asian monsoon rains pushed north from India. One county in Yunnan recorded 227.8mm of rainfall in 24 hours, for its highest total in a single day since records began in 1958.
