Diamond City in Super Swachh League of four cities

Time of India17-07-2025
Surat: Surat, which has been consistently ranked among India's cleanest cities, has added another feather to its cap after securing the top rank in the newly introduced 'Super Swachh League' category for cities with a population of over 10 lakh.
The announcement was made during a special
Swachh Bharat Mission
event held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on Thursday. The President of India presented the award to the Surat Municipal Corporation in recognition of its outstanding efforts in sanitation and urban cleanliness.
The Super Swachh League category was launched in Swachh Survekshan 2024 to honour cities that consistently performed well in previous surveys. It included cities that ranked in the top three at least twice in the last three editions, grouped based on population.
Surat stood out in the 10 lakh+ population category, earning the top rank alongside other high-performing cities like Indore, Navi Mumbai, and Vijayawada.
The Diamond City had jointly secured the top spot with Indore in the 2023 survey and finished second in both the 2021 and 2022 editions.
SMC has established a robust waste disposal and management system that ensures scientific processing of all collected waste, municipal commissioner Shalini Agarwal said.
With a daily processing capacity exceeding 1,800 tonnes, the city has achieved 100% scientific treatment of both wet and dry waste.
Seven decentralized processing units are operational across various zones, reducing the burden on central facilities and improving efficiency.
The civic body has also achieved 100% recycling of construction and demolition waste, amounting to over 150 tonnes per day.
Legacy waste bio-mining efforts have helped clear over 10 lakh metric tonnes from old dumping sites. Public-private partnerships have played a key role in developing composting and recycling infrastructure, while electric and CNG-based waste vehicles support environmentally responsible operations.

Govt launches mobile app to monitor garbage collection

1 2 Guwahati: In a first, the ' Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) Assam' has launched 'Swachh Sewa Assam', a citizen centric mobile application aimed at improving garbage collection and waste management. The officials said the initiative also seeks to empower citizens of the state, enabling them to monitor garbage collection services in real time and lodge complaints directly through the platform. Kriti Chachra, state mission director of Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), Assam, said one of the key features of the application is its hierarchical complaint redressal system, where citizens can raise complaints and officials at the highest level can take stock of the situation. "If a complaint remains unresolved at the local level, it can be escalated to higher authorities ensuring accountability and impactful solutions," Chachra added. The official said the mechanism would not only strengthen transparency, but will also aim to improve efficiency of municipal waste management operations across the state. She added that as part of the application, they will also be implementing a QR-based door to door garbage collection system. This system will be rolled out in phases, starting with Palashbari and North Guwahati, as part of a pilot project. "It is sort of an attendance system for garbage collectors, where they will digitally record the waste collection process, ensuring that no area is left unattended," Chachra said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Curug: Unsold Sofas Prices May Surprise You (Prices May Surprise You) Sofas | Search Ads Search Now Undo While the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) had previously introduced a similar QR-based door-to-door garbage collection system in the city, it faced challenges due to planning gaps and technical issues, preventing its effective implementation. However, The official said the QR system will now be integrated with the app and rolled out across all districts in a phased manner. Additionally, the department has also launched an official mascot known as 'Bheku', the new face of Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), Assam. It would serve as a symbol of cleanliness, representing the state's mission across awareness campaigns. Surat targets 50% EV share on roads by 2030

Taking a step towards environment-friendly transport in Diamond City, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) on Friday launched its Green Vehicle Policy (GVP) 2025 on Friday, setting an ambitious target of at least 50 per cent of all vehicles sold being electric by 2030. Replacing the earlier Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2021, the new framework focuses on adoption of alternative fuels like hydrogen, biofuels, along with EVs. The policy will be implemented for five years. To support the growing number of EVs, over 460 charging stations will be established across the city, ensuring that there is at least one station per sq km, incentivising e-vehicle purchase through subsidies and creating necessary infrastructure. Direct incentives in the form of subsidies will be provided to commercial electric three-wheelers, light commercial vehicles (LCVs), and pink e-autos for women entrepreneurs. Subsidies will vary by vehicle type and segment, making adoption economically viable. Incentives also include exemption from vehicle tax. SMC will create a green vehicle cell, which will coordinate the implementation of the policy through a structured governance framework, including a technical committee and monitoring teams. A dedicated Green Vehicle Fund will also be formed, pooling resources from municipal funding, green bonds, CSR contributions, carbon financing, and govt grants. The cell will include officials from SMC, the Regional Transport Office (RTO), electricity distribution companies, traffic police, the members of The Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and experts. 'The GV aligns with India's net-zero carbon goals and serves as a roadmap to make Surat a climate-resilient and environmentally-friendly urban centre. Through a combination of technological adoption, public-private collaboration, and citizen engagement, we aim to lead the green mobility revolution in the state,' said Rajan Patel, chairman, Standing Committee. Additionally, the policy envisions the creation of green zones and mobility corridors to improve air quality and promote non-polluting transportation options. The development of GV manufacturing and assembling units locally will be promoted. The policy has a scope of projects for battery recycling. Future expansion plans include hydrogen and biofuel technologies through a structured roadmap focused on technology adaptation, infrastructure growth, and demand creation. To enable a seamless experience for EV users, a network of 460 public charging stations will be deployed using the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Digital platforms, including a One EV App and a web portal, will streamline services and bring transparency to stakeholders. The city will also host a GV Expo on Sept 8, showcasing innovations in GV technology and charging infrastructure.
