Preview: Ahly eye fourth straight title as new Egyptian Premier League season kicks off - Egyptian Football

Defending champions Ahly will be aiming for a fourth consecutive Egyptian Premier League title as the new season gets underway on Friday 8 August The season kicks off with newly promoted Wadi Degla hosting African champions Pyramids FC at El-Salam Stadium in Cairo, marking the start of what is expected to be a fiercely contested season. For the first time, the league will feature 21 teams instead of the traditional 18, after the Egyptian Pro League (EPL) opted to cancel relegation last season. The promotion of Arab Contractors, Wadi Degla, and debutants Kahrabet El-Ismailya expanded the field. The league will maintain the same format as last season: all 21 clubs will play a single round before being split into two groups. The top seven will compete for the title, while the remaining 14 will battle to avoid relegation. This season, four teams will be relegated instead of three. Ahly start as favourites Ahly enter the season as overwhelming favourites, having reinforced their squad with high-profile signings during the summer transfer window. The Cairo giants brought in Egypt international Mahmoud 'Trezeguet' Hassan, who returns home after a long spell in Europe, and winger Ahmed 'Zizo' Sayed in a shock move from rivals Zamalek. Tunisian midfielder Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane also joined to bolster the midfield. These additions complement an already strong core including skipper Mohamed El-Shennawy, Emam Ashour and Moroccan winger Achraf Bencharki. Despite a disappointing showing at the FIFA Club World Cup, Ahly remain focused on domestic success. 'We're ready for this special season. The club's strategy is always about winning titles,' Trezeguet told reporters. The Red Devils are now under the guidance of new head coach José Riveiro, who will look to maintain the club's dominance and capture a record-extending 46th domestic title. Pyramids pose biggest threat Pyramids FC came close to winning their first league title last season, only to be overtaken by Ahly in the final stages. They responded by capturing the CAF Champions League title — the first in their history — confirming their growing stature. Despite a quiet transfer window, Pyramids added Brazilian winger Ewerton to replace star Ibrahim Adel, who joined UAE's Al Jazira. Croatian coach Krunoslav Jurčić, who took charge in February 2024, continues at the helm with a stable squad and coaching staff. 'Our African title confirmed we are on the right track. We'll do everything to win the domestic league,' said sporting director Hany Saed. Zamalek rebuild under Ferrera Zamalek, meanwhile, have undergone a major overhaul. The club appointed a new sporting director, John Edward, who reshaped the squad by signing 10 new players and hiring Belgian coach Yannick Ferrera. After finishing third last season and exiting the CAF Confederation Cup at the quarter-final stage, Zamalek salvaged some pride by winning the Egypt Cup. Expectations remain tempered, with questions around the quality of new signings. 'I can't promise results, but I vow that we will fight fiercely in every game to make our fans proud,' Ferrera said at a news conference on Wednesday. Outside contenders and debutants Clubs such as Masry, Ceramica Cleopatra and NBE Club are expected to be competitive, though their chances of challenging for the title appear slim. Their focus will likely be on securing a continental qualification spot. Arab Contractors return to the top flight after one season in the second tier, while Wadi Degla are back after a four-year absence. Kahrabet El-Ismailya, meanwhile, will make their Premier League debut and aim to avoid an immediate drop. The expanded league promises more fixtures, greater competition, and higher stakes in what could be one of the most unpredictable Egyptian Premier League seasons in recent memory. Big medals haul for Egypt at African boccia - Sports - Al-Ahram Weekly

Hosted at Dr Hassan Mustafa Sports Hall in 6th of October City under the patronage of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and organised by the Egyptian Boccia Federation led by Ahmed Adam, the event served as a qualifier for the 2026 Boccia World Cup. The Egyptian national team delivered an exceptional performance, earning a total of 11 medals across individual, pairs and team events. In the individual competitions, Egypt claimed eight medals - four gold and four silver. The team also secured two gold medals in the pairs category and a bronze in the team event. In the BC4 pairs event, Hanaa Al-Far and Mustafa Abou Saada captured the gold medal. In the BC3 pairs category, Abdel-Rahman Saad and Rahma Mustafa also achieved gold. The team of Tasneem Gouda (BC1), Mohannad Fawzi, and Islam Al-Madlaa (both BC2) earned the bronze medal in the team event. In the individual competitions, Rahma Hesham (BC3), Hanaa Allam (BC4), Samir Abdel-Moez (BC3), and Tasneem Gouda (BC1) each secured gold medals. Meanwhile, silver medals were awarded to Fawzy (BC2), Abou Saada (BC4), Saad (BC3), and Mustafa (BC3). The African championship was entrusted to the Egyptian Boccia Federation in recognition of Egypt's strong reputation for hosting major regional and international events with excellence and professionalism. Boccia is a Paralympic sport that requires exceptional precision and muscular control. The sport is contested at local, national and international levels, by athletes with severe physical disabilities. Played from a seated position, the aim is to throw red or blue leather balls as close as possible to a small white ball known as the 'jack.' The game is contested in individual, pairs or team formats, with the objective of placing one's balls closest to the jack to score the highest number of points. President of the Egyptian Boccia Federation Adam confirmed that the International Boccia Federation had commended Egypt for its successful hosting of the African Boccia Championship, qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in South Korea. Adam said he received high praise from the international federation for the organisation of the championship and extended thanks to all the organising committees, especially that of volunteers. He emphasised that the international federation also applauded the performance of the newest referees, as the tournament witnessed the participation of eight local referees who impressed everyone with their outstanding performance. He noted that Dr Hassan Mustafa Sports Hall was the ideal venue for hosting boccia competitions, as it combines competition and training zones and accommodation in one location, making it exceptionally suitable for boccia athletes and reducing logistical challenges. Adam added that no complaints were received from any of the participating delegations, expressing his satisfaction, 'as this reflects the high-level organisation of the championship and enhances Egypt's reputation as a premier host'. He extended his gratitude to the Ministry of Youth and Sports for its continuous support of the sport. He added that competition in Africa has become 'extremely fierce' and that the championship featured remarkable and intense contests, reflecting the development of boccia across the continent. Despite the increased level of competition, Egypt still managed to achieve outstanding results in both individual and pairs categories. Adam also addressed the players of the national team directly. 'You fulfilled your responsibilities and more. We always aim for more medals because we're ambitious, but you've done your part and exceeded expectations.' He pointed out that the Egyptian national team continues to develop in both performance and results. Since its international debut in 2022, the team has progressed steadily from winning three medals in their first international appearance, to securing eight in the second, and now capping this continental event with 11 medals, a significant accomplishment for the team. Adam also appealed to sponsors and business leaders to support the athletes, highlighting that the equipment used in boccia is very expensive and requires financial backing. The African championship was entrusted to the Egyptian Boccia Federation under Adam's leadership due to the international federation's confidence in Egypt's consistent ability to successfully organise major continental and international events. Moreover, Egypt's Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhi honoured the Egyptian boccia team's delegation following their impressive performance at this, the third African championship. During the meeting, the minister praised the team's remarkable achievements. Out of 10 participating athletes, the national team secured a total of 11 medals: one gold, four silver, and six bronze. This success highlights the growing level and development of boccia in Egypt. Sobhi expressed his pride in the players, noting that seven athletes had officially qualified for the 2026 World Cup in South Korea. He emphasised the ministry's commitment to supporting Paralympic sports and providing full backing for athletes with disabilities, ensuring they continue to represent Egypt honorably on the international stage. He added that this recognition aligns with the state's strategy to support and celebrate outstanding athletes, particularly in specialised sports where Egypt continues to make notable progress and achieve significant results at both continental and global levels. * A version of this article appears in print in the 7 August, 2025 edition of Al-Ahram Weekly Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Senegal coach Diallo downplays favourites tag after derby win

Senegal head coach Souleymane Diallo has rejected claims that they are favourites to win the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) in East Africa after an important win over fellow giants Nigeria. The Teranga Lions started their title defence with a statement win over their fierce rivals Nigeria on Monday, as Christian Gomis's late strike secured a narrow 1-0 triumph in Kampala. But while the result drew headlines, it was the measured post-match reflection from head coach Diallo that added deeper insight into the reigning champions' evolving strategy. Tactical Mastery and a Team Effort 'It was team solidarity,' Diallo said post-match, when asked what made the difference on the day. 'We played like a team—high press, counter-press, compact blocks. The players showed character and intelligence.' The Teranga Lions switched to a 4-2-3-1 setup to neutralize Nigeria's 4-4-2 shape. Diallo explained that they had rehearsed various tactical variants in the build-up to the tournament, allowing them flexibility against different opponents. His midfield dictated tempo, wingers stretched Nigeria's defence, and the forwards linked play effectively. 'We've worked on our shape for two months. Our midfielders controlled the pace and our wingers exploited the flanks. It paid off today.' Christian Gomis Delivers, But Coach Stays Grounded The decisive moment came in the 75th minute, when Gomis latched onto a through ball and slotted home calmly, sending the Senegalese bench into wild celebrations. Yet Diallo was quick to avoid over-celebration. 'Are we favourites? No. It's just three points. We'll take the positives, but there's still work to be done,' he cautioned. The coach emphasized the importance of maintaining humility in a tight group where small margins can make a huge difference. 'We're ahead now, but that only matters if we build on it.' Tribute to Local Coaches and Grassroots Work Diallo used the opportunity to highlight the contributions of domestic coaches who often go unheralded. 'This win is for the Senegalese people, especially the local coaches,' he said. 'They are the ones doing the groundwork back home. We have an easy job because of the platform they've created.' Reading the Opponent and Making the Right Calls Diallo revealed that Nigeria's attempt to overload the left wing required tactical patience. 'They were strong down that side. We waited to understand their approach, then made changes,' he said, adding that his substitutions brought 'energy and fresh ideas.' His ability to adapt mid-game without compromising the team's structure proved key in securing all three points. Young Blood, Big Stage Perhaps the boldest part of Diallo's approach was his trust in youth. Several players from Senegal's U17 ranks were handed debuts on African football's senior stage. 'The high level does not consider age,' he stated. 'Some of our players play different roles at their clubs, but today they adapted quickly. Hats off to those kids—they represent the intelligence of Senegalese football.' Eyes on the Prize, But Feet on the Ground While Senegal's defensive solidity and attacking threat were evident, Diallo insists his side must continue improving. 'We must equal or better today's performance in the next match. This tournament punishes complacency.' With three points secured and belief rising, the reigning champions have sent an early warning. But Diallo's message remains consistent: focus, adapt, and grow. Next Fixture: Senegal will aim to consolidate their lead in Group C in their next fixture against
