Comedian Jeff Ross Reveals How Doctor Jokingly Delivered His Colon Cancer Diagnosis: 'Good News and Bad News'

The 59-year-old comedian, known as the "roast master general" for his performances in celebrity roasts over the years, even found some humor in a joke his doctor delivered when he was diagnosed with colon cancer.
During a Wednesday, June 18, appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Ross reflected on his diagnosis and having seven inches of his colon removed via laparoscopic surgery in the summer of 2024.
Recalling the moment that he learned about the diagnosis, he said that his doctor shared it with a savage joke.
"My oncologist was like, 'Jeff, the good news and bad news. The bad news is you're going to need six months of chemo. The good news is you lost your hair a long time ago,' " he shared.
Ross explained that he was diagnosed after having his first colonoscopy at the urging of a friend.
"I was already in my 50's, and I'd never gotten a colonoscopy," he admitted. "I went in, I had no symptoms, and I had a tumor in my colon. You always think it's never going to happen to you, and it happened to me."
He poked fun at losing some of his colon, saying, "Now I have a semicolon."
His surgery and remaining scars also provided some material for a joke: "You know, I had laparoscopic surgery so I have holes around here [singalling his torso and chest]. Little holes. I'm like 50 Cent if instead of getting shot, he ate pastrami twice a week for 50 years."
Ross addresses his cancer diagnosis and treatment in his one-man show Jeff Ross: Take a Banana for the Ride, which is heading to Broadway for the summer.
Speaking to The Minnesota Star Tribune in March 2025, he said that he was "still trying to figure it out" regarding incorporating the experience into the act.
"I don't want the show to be maudlin, but I think it's important to address it," he said. "Norm [Macdonald, his close friend who died in 2021] was very private and hid his sickness. I didn't think that was fair to the audience and his friends, so I'm putting it out there. But I don't want people to feel sorry for me. It's going to be a very empowering and bold statement on how to get through tough times."
The comedian's brush with cancer isn't the only medical emergency that he's approached in a joking manner.
In April 2025, Ross revealed that he spent the night in an emergency room after developing a serious allergic reaction to something that he ate.
"It was my first allergic reaction ever," he wrote on Instagram at the time. "I guess that's pretty remarkable considering I'm constantly shoving whatever food is in front of me into my face."

Speaking to Jimmy Kimmel, Ross joked about his dramatically swollen appearance triggered by the reaction, "It looks like I got hit in the face with some nunchucks."
Since they have "no idea" what he caused the reaction, he added that he will need to carry an EpiPen "for the rest of my life until it happens again."
"I'm like a little kid with a peanut allergy," he teased.

"I look back at my first job, and my mom was still sending me money to eat because she was worried I wasn't eating. I think about the countless people who've poured into me and helped me get better at this to then get to this point," says Pilgrim, who shares 3-year-old daughter Ella with her husband Ed Hartigan. "My mother, when I told her I was interviewing for this job, lost her mind. I watched Inside Edition growing up. It was on in our house, but also in my first TV job, it was a show that came on between newscasts," Pilgrim adds of the serendipity of her new gig. Still, the former GMA3: What You Need to Know anchor admits that she certainly feels "the weight" of stepping into a new role at an institution of a show like Inside Edition. "It's a legacy," she says, adding that doing the show after Norville is no small task, either. "To be in this job now at a point where I really appreciate everything that it is? I can't believe the job [was] open! Deborah was really nice and sent me an email, and at the end of the email she was floored that she had been in the job for as long as she had. She said that was because it was just such a great job, so why would you leave? It's one of those jobs that people don't leave because it's great." Pilgrim was born into a military family in Seoul, South Korea. Her mother is Korean, and her father hails from South Carolina. She grew up as a self-proclaimed Army brat. "We moved all over the place, literally four times in first grade, I always tell everyone that," Pilgrim says with a laugh. "But what's nice about that is I feel like traveling a lot is good training for a journalist because you learn how to make friends, you feel uncomfortable when you meet people you've never met before, and you know that that's going to happen every time. It conditions you to just say the first thing and make the first move to have a conversation." The innate curiosity and interpersonal skills Pilgrim developed early would continue to serve her well — by the time she was in high school, the family had settled back in South Carolina. "We grew up eating kimchi and country-fried steak and collard greens. It was a weird collision of cultural differences that ended up all one thing," she says. "And I think the luxury of having a parent who's not from where you grow up — a different country — very different than South Carolina, you realize how small the world is because you're traveling back and forth between those two different families. Pilgrim decided to pursue journalism while in college after taking classes in the subject and working for a local TV station while she was still in school. "I liked the access that it gave me. Whether you were covering a sporting event or a community event, you got to be there in the middle of it. That I found to be kind of addictive," she says. After working on a story where her subject confessed to a crime mid-interview and was subsequently arrested thanks in part to her reporting, Pilgrim knew she'd found the line of work she was meant to be doing all along. "[That man] said all the things to me that day because I was in many ways naive, but I was curious and very human with him. I wasn't asking him probing or prying questions. I was letting him talk and giving him human responses," Pilgrim explains, "and our news director at the time, she said something to me that I've never forgotten and I try to hold on to no matter how many interviews that I do. The actor became a teen heartthrob in the 1990s and 2000s after appearing in Casper (1995), and is now going back to that persona for a new Vera Bradley advertising campaign. On Thursday, Aug. 14, the actor, 46, posted an Instagram photo channeling his '90s style, including his signature heartthrob haircut. The photo, which was formatted to look like a folded poster from a teen magazine, included Sawa sporting a white T-shirt and a flannel wrapped around his hips with a pair of light-wash denim jeans. 'Me and the hair? We're back together… LINK IN MY BIO!!' he simply captioned the photo, leaving fans curious. The link in Sawa's Instagram bio directs users to the Vera Bradley website. And like Sawa's post, it is modeled after '90s website designs. 'There they are!' A hush fell over three humans with cameras, as a doglike shape emerged from the shadows, followed by another, smaller dog shape. For a nanosecond the creatures were silhouetted by a streetlamp. It was just after 8:30 p.m. on a footpath in Central Park, not far from the Delacorte Theater, where 'Twelfth Night' was in progress, and the coyotes had appeared. The couple, named Romeo and Juliet by their fans, have been living together in the park for over a year. Juliet was the first to arrive, and there have been regular sightings of her since 2020. In the summer of 2024, she was joined by a male coyote, a little darker and slightly larger, and their love story made headlines.
