
BBC uncovers lasting toxic legacy of cargo ship disaster off Sri Lanka
So far, hundreds of millions of nurdles may have been cleared away - but the remaining, lentil-sized microplastic granules have become increasingly difficult to find as they disappear deeper into the sand.Worse, those pieces of plastic now appear to be becoming even more toxic, new research suggests."They seem to be accumulating pollution from the ocean," said David Megson, of Manchester Metropolitan University. "Like a lovely big chemical sponge."Nurdles are the raw materials that are melted to make plastic products and it is not unusual for large amounts to be transported in the global plastic supply chain.The problems onboard the X-Press Pearl started soon after setting sail from Dubai Port bound for Port Klang in Malaysia, when the crew noticed that a container carrying nitric acid was leaking, corroding the metal box. But they were denied permission to unload the smoking, leaking container at ports in Qatar and India.The container had been leaking acid at a rate of about a litre an hour for at least eight days when it sailed into Sri Lankan waters late at night on 19 May 2021.It had requested emergency berthing - but by the morning the Singapore-flagged vessel was alight.Despite firefighting efforts from the crew, the Sri Lankan authorities and salvors, the fire spread throughout the ship.Two weeks later, it sank, spilling its cargo and fuel into the sea around nine nautical miles off the country's south-west coast, between the capital Colombo and Negombo to the north.
What happened next "was just like out of a war movie", says Muditha Katuwawala, an environmentalist and founder of the Pearl Protectors, a local NGO that volunteered to help the clean-up operation, which was run largely by Sri Lankan state authorities with funding from the ship's owners."We started seeing turtles getting washed up with similar sorts of traits... the skin had burn marks [and] was peeling off. The nose and eyes were red and puffed up, and we saw dolphins washing up and... their skin was peeling off and red," Mr Katuwawala said.The nurdles on the beaches were "like snow," he says, adding that "it was horrifying".The clean-up began in earnest. At the start, Mr Katuwawala and his fellow volunteers "were collecting like 300-400 kilos of nurdles" each day.Over time, it dropped to three to four kilograms in a couple of hours."The nurdles were getting more dispersed, it was harder to see them as they got buried in the sand over time."It was decided the cost-benefit ratio was no longer worth the effort of mobilising volunteers. The groups stood down, leaving the task to state-organised local clean-up groups.At the same time, scientists were getting concerned about the possibility the plastic pellets - already harmful to animals which eat them accidentally - may be getting more toxic, contaminated from the spill, or from other pollution sources.Over the ensuing years, they have collected samples which could help trace the effect over time.
In November 2024, the BBC and Watershed Investigations sent more than 20 of those samples to a team of forensic chemists specialising in environmental pollution from Manchester Metropolitan University.They found the most heavily contaminated nurdles were those burnt in the fire, which leach metals toxic to aquatic life, like arsenic, lead, cadmium, copper, cobalt and nickel.The team also found the pellets "still going round appear to be sucking up more pollution from the environment" and were becoming "more toxic", according to Mr Megson."They will be ingested [and] will pass pollution on to marine organisms," he says.Tests carried out on fish caught near the site of the disaster - as well as the nearby Negombo lagoon - found some contained the same pollutants that were present in the ship's cargo and on the nurdles.Some of the fish contained levels of hazardous metals - some of which were found in the disaster - which exceeded safe limits.Researchers say the disaster cannot be discounted as the source of contamination, although it also can't be directly proven to be the source, as it's not known if these fish ate nurdles, how many they ingested, or if the pollution came from other sources."But placed on top of everything else that is in that system, there's a really good likelihood that it's causing harm to the environment and also potentially harm to people and humans that are eating and relying on that marine ecosystem for a source of their food," Mr Megson adds.Local fishermen do draw the link to the disaster."There's no fish since then. We've never had the same amount of fish that we used to catch," fisherman Jude Sulanta explains."Our lives have turned upside down. From the stretch where the ship sank up until here you don't get many new, young fish at all."The ship's owner, X-Press Feeders Ltd, says to date it has worked diligently to ensure the best response to the disaster and spent more than $130m (£96m) to remove the wreck and debris at sea. It says it has also paid more than $20m to the Sri Lankan government for clean-up operations on the coast and to compensate fishermen.It says, however, that the Sri Lankan government has assumed responsibility for all shoreside clean-up activities and it is disappointed by the delays in that process and the ongoing impacts this is having.The Sri Lankan government says the amount paid by the ship's owner - which was capped by an interim UK maritime court order - is not enough to cover the long-term damage, and it is pursuing legal action to overturn the cap and secure further compensation. On Thursday, Sri Lanka's Supreme Court ordered the company to pay $1bn as an initial payment to cover long-term economic and environmental damage it says the country suffered as a result of the disaster - but the cap remains in place. The Supreme Court doesn't have jurisdiction over Singapore, where X-Press Feeders Ltd has its headquarters.X-Press Feeders said it was extremely disappointed with the judgment and that they are reviewing it with their legal advisers, insurers and other relevant stakeholders to best assess their next course of action.Prof Prashanthi Guneeardena - an environmental economist at University of Sri Jayawardenapura who chaired an expert committee of scientists to assess the damage - puts the cost of the disaster at closer to more than $6bn, taking into account things like the loss of wildlife, as well as impact on tourism, fishing and harm to local residents from the toxic cloud released when the ship burned."Large quantities of dioxin and furan have been added to the atmosphere and these are carcinogens. And then we have calculated it may kill about 70 people in our country," says Prof Guneeardena.The ship owner rejects this assessment. It quotes the International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation (ITOPF), an organisation which is funded by the shipping industry to assess marine spills. It says the report was "unparticularised, inaccurate, and lacked credible scientific basis".The ship owner has also said itself and its crew have "followed the internationally accepted procedures in dealing with the acid leak, while maintaining all safety and emergency protocols".Colombo Port Authority has also denied any responsibility, saying it did not know of the issues until the ship arrived in its waters.
The sea is the lifeblood of this island nation. Its stunning golden coasts are a huge draw for tourists, and for generations fishing has fed the country. But Mr Sulanta, the fisherman, is worried that his way of life no longer has a future."Many are selling their boats and trying to go abroad. And many people are fed up. In fact, my son himself, he's working with me at the moment. He's also a fisherman."But he's also considering leaving the country. It's already been several years. If we were going to get justice we would have had it by now," he says.

What could go wrong? Scientists want to launch an interstellar mission to a BLACK HOLE
It sounds like something taken straight from the pages of a high-concept science fiction novel. But scientists now want to launch an interstellar mission into the heart of a distant black hole. The plan is to create a tiny spacecraft no heavier than a paperclip, propelled by lasers, and accelerated to nearly the speed of light. Although it might take up to 100 years, scientists say this bold mission could change everything we know about physics. However, this groundbreaking project could come with eye-watering costs of up to £1 trillion for the lasers alone. To make things even more difficult, the technology required to actually build the spacecraft doesn't yet exist. Despite these issues, Professor Cosimo Bambi, of Fudan University in Shanghai, is optimistic that it could be possible within a few decades. Professor Bambi told the Daily Mail: 'The technology can be developed and it is just an issue of time, money, and motivations.' Black holes are among the strangest and most mysterious objects in the known universe. They are formed when enormous dying stars collapse into an ultra-dense point where gravity is so strong that not even light can escape. Under these extreme conditions, the laws of physics as we know them start to break down and change in unusual ways. The problem for scientists is that, since black holes emit no light or other forms of radiation, it is extremely difficult to learn about how they behave. Professor Bambi's proposal, published today in the journal iScience, is to probe the very fabric of spacetime by sending a spacecraft directly into the heart of a black hole. However, for this plan to work, scientists will need two things: a black hole close enough to visit, and a spacecraft capable of surviving the journey. For the spacecraft, Professor Bambi proposes using something called a nanocraft. Traditional spacecraft, which burn chemical fuel, are too slow and clunky to reach the speeds required. What is a nanocraft? A nanocraft is a theoretical spacecraft designed to reach velocities approaching light speed. Miniature probes weighing just grams are attached to large, lightweight sails. Lasers on Earth bombard the sail with photons to accelerate the craft. In theory, these could reach their top speed within minutes and achieve a significant fraction of light speed. Scientists have proposed that these craft could reach our neighbouring star system, Alpha Centauri, in just 20 years. Instead, a nanocraft is essentially a microchip attached to a large, lightweight sail. Lasers based on Earth or in orbit blast this sail with photons to accelerate the craft to a third of the speed of light. The nano-technology required to make this possible doesn't yet exist, and the required cost of powering the lasers would be exorbitant, but Professor Bambi isn't daunted. 'If we use current technology, the cost would be around one trillion GBP, so it is definitely beyond the budget of any scientific experiment,' he said. 'However, if we consider the trend of the past 20 years and we extrapolate this trend to the future, we find that the cost would reduce to something like one billion GBP in 20-30 years: £1 billion is roughly the typical budget in today's large space missions.' Unfortunately, this mission's biggest obstacle is outside of anyone's control. Professor Bambi says: 'In my opinion, the key point is that we need to be "lucky" and have a black hole within 20-25 light-years from the Solar System.' At this distance, it would still take the nanocraft about 70 to 80 years to reach the black hole and then another 20 to 25 years for its data to return to Earth. That gives a total mission time of up to a century, which, although a daunting challenge, is still a feasible goal. 'If the closest black hole is not within 20-25 light years, but still within 40-50 light years, it would be more challenging to reach the necessary technological requirements for the mission, but it would still be possible,' says Professor Bambi. 'If the distance of the closest black hole exceeds 40-50 light years, I am afraid we have to give up.' Currently, the nearest black hole scientists have found is Gaia-BH1 at 1,560 light-years from Earth. Although that is very close by cosmic terms, it's still much too far away for humanity to reach with conventional spacecraft. Instead, Professor Bambi's hope is that scientists may soon detect a black hole much closer to home. Our best theories about stellar evolution suggest that there should be a black hole lurking around 20 to 25 light-years from Earth. But since black holes don't give off any of their own light, finding this hidden giant will not be an easy task. As scientists get better at hunting for black holes, Professor Bambi says that we should know whether there is one within 25 light-years in the next five to ten years. If there is a suitable black hole in our galactic neighbourhood, then Professor Bambi believes this mission would be well worth the astronomical price tag. Black holes are the sources of the strongest gravitational fields found anywhere in nature, which makes them an ideal laboratory to test Einstein's theory of general relativity. Einstein's theories make certain predictions about how space and time should react to the push and pull of intense gravitational forces. However, many scientists believe that the areas inside or around a real black hole are different from what the theory predicts. By taking the first accurate measurements of these regions, scientists would finally be able to know just what those differences are. Professor Bambi says: 'The motivation of such a mission would be to test the gravitational field around a black hole, compare the measurements with the theoretical predictions of General Relativity, and hopefully find some deviations.' That could settle some big questions like whether the rules of physics change near a black hole, or if Einstein's theories even work at all under the universe's most extreme conditions. Black holes are so dense and their gravitational pull is so strong that no form of radiation can escape them - not even light. They act as intense sources of gravity which hoover up dust and gas around them. Their intense gravitational pull is thought to be what stars in galaxies orbit around. How they are formed is still poorly understood. Astronomers believe they may form when a large cloud of gas up to 100,000 times bigger than the sun, collapses into a black hole. Many of these black hole seeds then merge to form much larger supermassive black holes, which are found at the centre of every known massive galaxy. Alternatively, a supermassive black hole seed could come from a giant star, about 100 times the sun's mass, that ultimately forms into a black hole after it runs out of fuel and collapses. When these giant stars die, they also go 'supernova', a huge explosion that expels the matter from the outer layers of the star into deep space.

Woman's 'uncontrollable orgasmic episodes' baffles doctors - until a common hormone problem is found to be the cause
Doctors were left baffled by a rare condition that saw a 20-year-old woman experience multiple orgasms several times a day, leaving her constantly sexually aroused. Far from being pleasurable, the unnamed woman said the disorder caused her intense distress and interfered with her work and social life. From the age of 14 she also suffered with sharp 'electric sensations' in her groin and pelvic contractions resembling orgasms. Despite multiple treatments, including antidepressants, her symptoms persisted, causing her to believe that her orgasms were being externally manipulated. When she finally visited a hospital in China desperate to get help, her condition had progressed to the point that she could not get through the initial consultation without suffering an episode. Neurologists were left clueless after ruling out epilepsy and a host of other neurological disorders through ECG monitoring and other tests. On physical examination, the patients also showed no structural abnormalities that could have been affecting her reproductive organs and triggering feelings of arousal. Eventually doctors diagnosed her with persistent genital arousal disorder (PGAD) after a course of antipsychotic medication—risperidone and later olanzapine—proved promising. After a few weeks of treatment, her symptoms began to subside and her delusions improved, enabling her to return to work and resume social commitments. However, it was observed that when she stopped taking the drugs, her symptoms returned. The disorder is still widely misunderstood and is thought to affect just one per cent of people leaving in the UK, most of which are women, although experts say the condition is underdiagnosed. Doctors remain uncertain what cause the complex condition, but it is thought to result from the misfiring of nerves that connect the brain and the genitals. Whilst there is no specific cure, patients can take various medications that work by suppressing nerve signals, in the hope of easing symptoms. PGAD symptoms vary widely but commonly include genital pain and discomfort and intense sensations of arousal without sexual desire or stimulation. Possible physical causes include nerve damage, spinal abnormalities and medication side-effects. Some studies also suggest that stress and anxiety may worsen symptoms. Other schools of thought claim that the disorder is linked to problems with dopamine. Commonly referred to as the happiness hormone, dopamine is a key neurotransmitter involved in the brain's pleasure and reward system. It is thought that excess dopamine may amplify sexual arousal, and could theoretically produce orgasmic episodes and other PGAD symptoms. It follows that the use of dopamine inhibitors, like risperidone and olanzapine may help lessen these abnormal sexual sensations by dampening the dopamine response. Doctors led by ing Yan and Dafang Ouyang, affiliated with several national mental health institutions in Beijing, say case studies like these play a vital role in medical advances providing evidence for widely misunderstood disorders. However, researchers acknowledge that case studies describe one individual, making it difficult to draw conclusions about cause and effect without taking into consideration confounding factors like age, sex and medical history.

James Cameron warns of ‘Terminator-style apocalypse' if AI weaponised
The director James Cameron has warned that the use of artificial intelligence in a global arms race could lead to the kind of dystopia fictionalised in his Terminator franchise. Speaking to Rolling Stone to promote the publication of Ghosts of Hiroshima, an account of the first atomic bombing by bestselling author Charles Pellegrino which Cameron intends to adapt for the big screen, the film-maker behind three of the four highest-grossing films of all time (Titanic and the first two Avatar films), said that although he relies on AI professionally, he remains concerned about what might happen if it was leveraged with nihilistic intent. 'I do think there's still a danger of a Terminator-style apocalypse where you put AI together with weapons systems, even up to the level of nuclear weapon systems, nuclear defence counterstrike, all that stuff,' Cameron said. 'Because the theatre of operations is so rapid, the decision windows are so fast, it would take a super-intelligence to be able to process it, and maybe we'll be smart and keep a human in the loop. 'But humans are fallible, and there have been a lot of mistakes made that have put us right on the brink of international incidents that could have led to nuclear war. So I don't know.' He added: 'I feel like we're at this cusp in human development where you've got the three existential threats: climate and our overall degradation of the natural world, nuclear weapons, and super-intelligence. They're all sort of manifesting and peaking at the same time. Maybe the super-intelligence is the answer.' Cameron's original 1984 Terminator film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger is set in a world in which humanity is ruled by an artificially intelligent defence network called Skynet. Cameron's films, Avatar in particular, are actively engaged with AI in their execution, and the director has been positive about how the technology could help reduce production costs. Last September, he joined the board of directors of Stability AI and earlier this year said the future of blockbuster film-making hinges on being able to 'cut the cost of [VFX] in half'. He clarified that he hoped such cost-cutting would come not from human layoffs but speed acceleration. However, Cameron has also expressed scepticism about the capacity of AI to replace screenwriters. In 2023, he said: 'I just don't personally believe that a disembodied mind that's just regurgitating what other embodied minds have said – about the life that they've had, about love, about lying, about fear, about mortality – and just put it all together into a word salad and then regurgitate it … I don't believe that's ever going to have something that's going to move an audience. You have to be human to write that.'
