Bagnaia storms to first pole of season at Czech MotoGP

Reutersa day ago
BRNO, Czech Republic, July 19 (Reuters) - Twice MotoGP champion Francesco Bagnaia claimed his first pole position of the season at the Czech Republic motorcycle Grand Prix on Saturday, edging out Ducati teammate Marc Marquez, who crashed on his final qualifying lap.
Bagnaia crossed the line with the fastest time of one minute and 52.303 seconds in mostly sunny conditions in Brno, with Marquez qualifying second and Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo completing the front row.
Marquez was chasing an eighth pole of the season but slid into the gravel in the final minutes of second qualifying.
"I want to say thanks to my team - they did a fantastic job when I stopped for a little moment. We just did a little adjustment," Bagnaia said.
"It will be tricky for the tyres this afternoon," he added, referring to the Czech MotoGP sprint later on Saturday.
Reigning MotoGP champion Jorge Martin marked his return to qualifying with a 12th-place finish after missing 10 of the 11 rounds because of injuries.
Wrist and ankle injuries suffered in a pre-season crash had ruled the 27-year-old Martin out of the first three rounds before another crash in his first race on board the Aprilia bike in Qatar in April led to a collapsed lung and bruised ribs.
VR46 Racing's Fabio Di Giannantonio, fourth in the riders' championship, will start 13th on the grid after finishing third in qualifying one.
Marquez leads the riders' championship table with 344 points, with his younger brother Alex second on 261.

Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton 'makes key decision on Liverpool transfer' with Tottenham also interested in move

Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton has reportedly made a key decision regarding a potential move to Liverpool. The midfielder has been heavily linked with a switch to Anfield, while Tottenham are also interested in signing him. Palace are eager not to lose Wharton this summer, especially given that Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze could depart before the closure of the transfer window. As reported by The Sun, Wharton is willing to stay at Palace this season, which would mean that Liverpool would be the favourites to sign him. Wharton joined Palace in February 2024 from Blackburn, who would be entitled to 15 per cent of the fee from his next move. Since signing for Palace Wharton has made 43 appearances, although he missed a significant part of last season due to groin surgery. The 21-year-old is known for his excellent passing and technical ability. Wharton made his senior England debut against Bosnia and Herzegovina in June 2024 and was subsequently named in the Three Lions' Euro 2024 squad. However, he didn't feature at the tournament. Liverpool have been heavily active in the transfer market this summer, securing deals for Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez. The Reds would be willing to wait until next year if it means that they can secure a deal for Wharton. Bayern Munich and Real Madrid have also monitored Wharton's progress. However, his struggles with injury last season mean they haven't pursued a move for him.

Man City want £35m for James McAtee as Nottingham Forest and West Ham weigh up moves

Manchester City's valuation of James McAtee is proving a stumbling block for the England Under-21 captain's legion of suitors. Nottingham Forest and West Ham United as well as Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany are all competing for McAtee's signature. Most of McAtee's suitors had been hoping to strike a deal around the £20 million to £25 million mark for the player, who has entered the final year of his contract at City. But City are thought to be holding out for around £35m, meaning there is a significant gap in valuations. McAtee's admirers have not been deterred and Forest are thought to be among the clubs who could advance their interest in the City attacking midfielder in the days ahead. But there will be some significant negotiating to be done to strike a deal. City sold Cole Palmer to Chelsea for £42.5m in 2023 and have been using that as something of a benchmark on their pricing for McAtee. McAtee spent some time in Germany recently to meet Frankfurt and Dortmund and is believed to have been impressed by what he saw. Forest and West Ham are also pushing for the player as they bid to strengthen their attacks. Forest have sold Anthony Elanga to Newcastle for £55m while Morgan Gibbs-White faces an uncertain future amid Tottenham Hotspurs' efforts to sign the England midfielder. West Ham manager Graham Potter wants attacking reinforcements having sold Mohammed Kudus to Spurs for £55m. City are interested in re-signing James Trafford should Ederson or Stefan Ortega leave the club this summer. Newcastle had identified Trafford as a leading target but the England Under-21 goalkeeper is believed to have had his head turned by City's interest. Burnley have been holding out for up to £40m for Trafford after rejecting a bid from Newcastle worth around £25m. City sold Trafford to Burnley for a projected £19m in 2023 and have a buy-back option on the goalkeeper but, like Newcastle, they are not thought to be willing to pay as much as £40m. Ederson has been linked with a move to Galatasaray but senior sources at City have played down the talk of a switch to the Turkish club. The Brazil goalkeeper said late last month that rumours of him leaving were 'fake news' and that he expected to stay at City. Ortega's future remains the source of some uncertainty and if he was to leave City would need a replacement. City signed goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli from Chelsea last month following the departure of long-standing No 3 Scott Carson. Meanwhile, City are still planning on midfielder Nico González and academy graduate Nico O'Reilly, who has been linked with a number of loan moves, remaining at the club this summer. González, who joined City from Porto for £50m in January, has been attracting interest on the continent.
