South Florida gets windfall with Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, Fort Lauderdale Air Show on same weekend

Both Miami-Dade and Broward Counties are enjoying a windfall this weekend. That's thanks to the Miami Grand Prix in Miami Gardens and the Air Show in Fort Lauderdale. CBS News Miami shows you how big of a bang these events are for South Florida. High-octane entertainment on the streets and in the skies Andrew Austin's wife's birthday lands on the same weekend as the Fort Lauderdale Air Show. "It's her birthday month. So this kicks off the month," he said. Austin goes to the Fort Lauderdale Air Show every year because everything he wants to see is on the beach and in the sky. "Tent, food, beer. It's all covered," he said. Chris Dirato with the air show said tens of thousands of people are expected to flock to the shores to see the show in the sky. "People come from far and wide, they're spending money at restaurants, so they're obviously spending money at the hotels, there's obviously a big economic impact," he said. South Florida got a two-fer: If you like speed in the air, you went to Fort Lauderdale beach for the air show. And, if you like speed in the streets, there was the Miami Grand Prix in Miami Gardens. The Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau estimates that around a quarter of a million people come to Miami Gardens for the event. Victor Jimenez came here from Arizona for the Formula 1 races. Jimenez said the fast cars were fun, but he added that next time, he won't stay in Miami Beach and will pick a hotel closer to the track. "It took me two hours to come over here," Jimenez said. "I left at 10 a.m. By the time I was here, it was noon." Back at the beach, Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue said they're expecting spring break-level crowds, so they'll be doubling and tripling their resources on certain blocks. They're warning that it may be dangerous to watch the show in the ocean due to rip currents. Austin said it's definitely a beach day, just not a swimming day. "It is a sitting day and watching," Austin said.

Street League Skateboarding brings the best international skaters to Miami's first tournament

Street League Skateboarding is in Miami for the first time. It's an international skateboarding tournament and some of the best in the U.S. are here this weekend, including a South Florida native. CBS News Miami caught up with a few skateboarders who are here to compete. A skating competition filled with international stars, local heroes SLS is making its debut on Friday with several icons of the skating world, including international star Rayssa Leal. She made history as the youngest Olympic medalist in 85 years, earning silver in street skateboarding at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo at just 13 years old. When asked what it means for her to have so much hard work pay off early in her life, Leal said it all happened "really fast." "I mean like just having fun [with] every single contest," she said. Since then, Leal has continued to dominate, taking back-to-back first-place titles at the 2022 and 2023 SLS Super Crown World Championship. She told CBS News Miami that the key to her success is having fun. "We fall, we go up and we go again," Leal said. "[It] makes the skateboards feel like not only a sport -- we are like a big family." But it's a special competition this year for one of the skaters. Jamie Foy, who earned the highest skateboarding honors, including Thrasher Skater of the Year in 2017 and 2024, the South Florida native is looking forward to skating in front of his home crowd. "I'm excited because we had a Street League in Florida but it was up in Jacksonville, which was a lot different," he said. "Now, we're here in South Florida, and to me, it's like South Florida is the real Florida." And what makes it even more special? The skate course is modeled after iconic South Florida skate parks. "Miami is a kind of Mecca for skateboarding," Foy said. "It's been a very popular destination ever since the '90s." It all begins Friday at the Watsco Center in Coral Gables.

Olympic track medalist Fred Kerley arrested again in South Florida, accused of punching Olympian ex-girlfriend in the face

A track medalist who ran in the 2020 and 2024 Summer Olympics found himself in a South Florida jail again, just months after he faced charges for involving physical altercations with police and his estranged wife. On Thursday, Frederick "Fred" Kerley was arrested and charged with battery after he allegedly punched his ex-girlfriend and fellow Olympian Alaysha Johnson in the face during an interaction at a Dania Beach hotel ahead of a local track and field event, according to an arrest document obtained by CBS News Miami. At his bond court appearance on Friday, Kerley was granted a $1,000 bond, and the judge ordered him not to be in contact with Johnson and never return to the place of arrest. Fred Kerley Miami-Dade Corrections Richard Cooper, Kerley's attorney, released a statement regarding the arrest, claiming that Kerley was "attacked" during his interaction with Johnson. "We ask Fred's sponsors, fans, and the public for patience and respect as we let the State Attorney conduct his investigation," Cooper said. "We are confident that this case will be summarily dismissed shortly." CBS News Miami has also reached out to Johnson and her representatives for comment, but has not heard back at the time of publication. Grand Slam Track, a professional track and field league, provided a statement to CBS News Miami, saying in part that they are aware of Kerley's arrest and that he "will not compete" in its event this weekend in Miami. It is unclear whether Johnson is still competing in the event. A run-in with an ex turns violent Around 7:50 p.m., the Broward County Sheriff's Office responded to a battery investigation at the Le Meridien Dania Beach, a hotel near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Upon arrival, deputies found Johnson, who said she was allegedly "struck in the face with a closed fist" by Kerley, the arrest documents said. Johnson told deputies she was at the hotel because she was in South Florida for a track and field event, and had an appointment with her conditioning coach when she ran into her ex-boyfriend Kerley, who began to argue with her. Johnson continued, saying that Kerley allegedly "became aggressive" and continued to approach her, "stating something to the effect of 'I'm going to f*** everyone up in here,'" the arrest document said. It was at this moment that Kerley allegedly punched Johnson in the face, making her nose bleed. The arrest document continued, saying that deputies found that Johnson's injuries were consistent with her statement and that she wanted to press charges. She then provided a sworn tape statement, and pictures of her injuries were also taken. After being read his Miranda rights, Kerley allegedly refused to answer any of the deputy's questions. The deputy spoke with Johnson again, who said she and Kerley had dated for about six months and "have been broken up since October." "Johnson and Kerley were in an intimate relationship, never resided together, and have no kids in common," the arrest document said. Additionally, due to Johnson and Kerley both expected to run at the same event, deputies "feared that a chance of revictimization might occur, therefore, a civil citation was not given to Kerley," the arrest document said. Kerley was then placed under arrest and booked into the Broward County Main Jail. Second arrest in a matter of months This was not the first time Kerley was arrested in South Florida, especially in 2025. In January, Fred Kerley was arrested in Miami Beach for battery on an officer, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct. During the incident, police bodycam video showed Kerley trying to get to his car while a police investigation was happening, which led to a physical altercation and ended with him being taken down by police. As Fred Kerley posted bond and left jail with his attorneys, CBS News Miami spoke with his estranged wife Angelica Kerley, who accused him of domestic violence following an alleged incident back in May 2024. She claimed she asked Fred Kerley for a divorce on numerous occasions and a fresh start, but she said he wouldn't grant her the divorce. Fred Kerley's attorneys provided CBS News Miami a statement following the Miami Beach incident, saying as they left jail: "At this time, we look forward to working with the State Attorney's Office, helping in their investigation any way we can. And, we look forward to getting justice for Fred." Concerning Angelica Kerley's accusations, Fred Kerley's attorneys added: "The allegations are made by a highly motivated and angry woman. The idea that Mr. Kerley won't 'grant' her a divorce is just as ridiculous as the allegations against Fred."
