Sheffield United in advanced talks to sign Aston Villa's Louie Barry on loan
The Championship club have been the most likely option for Barry since a proposed agreement to join Hull City at the start of this month collapsed after concerns were raised over the affordability of the deal.
Hull struggled to meet the £3.5million financial package agreed with Villa, which included a 50 per cent sell-on clause as well as covering Barry's salary. Shortly after, a three-window transfer embargo was placed on Hull.

Sheffield United, who narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League last season following a play-off final defeat to Sunderland, have been in discussions with Villa and the 22-year-old in recent weeks, with a deal now close. It is set to be a season-long loan with no option to buy.
If completed, the forward will reunite with head coach Ruben Selles, who worked with Barry on loan at Hull last season, though he only made four appearances due to a knee injury in February that ruled him out for the rest of the season. Selles is a keen advocate of Barry's as the club aim to regain promotion to the top-flight.
Barry had joined Hull in January after he scored 15 goals in 23 League One appearances at Stockport County in the first half of the campaign.
Barry came through West Bromwich Albion's academy and has had spells at Barcelona, Ipswich Town, Swindon Town, MK Dons and Salford City. He has made one senior appearance for Villa, scoring on his debut against Liverpool in a 4-1 FA Cup defeat in 2021.

Linney opens Carlisle United account in victory over AFC Fylde
AFC Fylde 0 Carlisle United 2: Regan Linney opened his Carlisle account and Luke Armstrong was also on target in a pre-season win at AFC Fylde. The forwards both struck in the first half as Mark Hughes' side claimed their first victory of the summer. Armstrong drilled United in front on 12 minutes before summer signing Linney fired his first Blues goal on the half-hour mark. Sub Georgie Kelly came close to a third while Gabe Breeze made some good saves to keep a clean sheet at the other end. Carlisle were more impressive in the first half than the second at Mill Farm with forwards Armstrong and ex-Altrincham man Linney to the fore, while teenage defender Hayden Atkinson impressed at the back. Hughes gave his outfield starters an hour before making ten substitutions, with keeper Breeze playing the full game and Josh Grant making his first Blues appearance. United's line-up for the game at Mill Farm included two summer signings in Linney and David Ajiboye, while youth team defender Atkinson got a start alongside Terell Thomas in defence. Kelly was in the squad for the first time in pre-season while new boy Josh Grant was also on the bench. Not involved again, though, were Morgan Feeney and Jordan Jones, with Stephen Wearne among other absentees. Latest signing Bevis Mugabi was with the squad at Fylde but not involved in the game. Bevis Mugabi watches his new team-mates at Fylde (Image: Ben Holmes) National League North side Fylde were captained by ex-Carlisle defender Corey Whelan, with a host of trialists in the home squad. Thomas captained United, who started well, with an attacking trio of Linney, Armstrong and Ajiboye on the front foot and the Blues backed by a strong and vocal travelling support at Mill Farm. Linney had an early chance when Josh Williams and Ajiboye combined to send Armstrong down the right, the striker taking on Corey Whelan before crossing low, and home keeper Zac Jones saving Linney's first-time finish as the summer signing cut in front of his man. Carlisle's bright start continued and, after Jack Morris's positive run for Fylde was denied, United scored. First, United forced a mistake from the home defence before Williams' throw was glanced inside by Ajiboye to Armstrong, who showed strength and determination to get away from his man and shoot low across keeper Jones and in off the far post. Luke Armstrong drills home the opener (Image: Ben Holmes) It was an impressive opening to Armstrong's pre-season account. Carlisle had some defending to do as Fylde played some neat football, but United survived a number of crosses and set-pieces. United then grew back into things as an attacking force, with Linney denied at the near post by Jones before doubling the Blues' lead on the half-hour. Elliot Embleton fed Linney with a lovely cross-field ball, with Linney then controlling, running at the defence and eventually driving it low into the net. Regan Linney scored United's second (Image: Ben Holmes) Carlisle almost ambushed Fylde for another soon afterwards, Ajiboye onside as a lofted ball found him, but Lincoln McFayden getting back to deny him. Callum Whelan then saw a shot blocked as United continued to test their hosts, but Fylde almost got one back when Ethan Mitchell's shot was tipped wide by Breeze before half-time. While Hughes made no changes at the break, Fylde boss Craig Mahon made five, with four more trialists introduced for the second half. Teenage defender Atkinson did well to see off a dangerous home attack early in the second half, and Breeze then superbly denied a trialist home sub, leaping to tip over a goalbound shot after the hosts had won it back from Williams as Carlisle tried to play out. Hughes then changes United's entire outfield line-up on the hour mark, with Josh Grant on for his first appearance among the ten changes, and Kelly on for his first summer outing. Junior Luamba almost created something on the counter-attack after another Breeze save, and then Kelly headed an Archie Davies free-kick just wide. At the other end, Breeze showed sharp reflexes to deny Fylde's trialist sub frontman when he looked set to score at the near post. Freddie O'Donoghue almost pounced on a slip from Fylde's sub trialist keeper late on, before Cedwyn Scott was hurt in a challenge and had to go off three minutes from time, youngster Atkinson coming back on. AFC Fylde: Jones (Trialist 46), Mitchell (Trialist 61), Corey Whelan (Hailwood 61), McFayden (Trialist 61), Wilson (Jackson 61), Morris (Holder 61), Trialist (Trialist 46), Ormerod (Mohammed 46), Trialist (Trialist 46), O'Kane, Meadowcroft (Trialist 46). Not used: Hailwood, Holder, Jackson, Mohammed, Trialist. Booked: Trialist. United: Breeze, Williams (Davies 61), Harper (Murray 61), Thomas (Hayden 61), Atkinson (Ellis 61), Callum Whelan (Lowes 61), Robson (Grant 61), Embleton (O'Donoghue 61), Ajiboye (Scott 61, Atkinson 88), Linney (Kelly 61), Armstrong (Luamba 61). Rashford closing in on Barcelona move: reports
Manchester United outcast Marcus Rashford is closing in on a move to Barcelona, reports said on Saturday. The 27-year-old has not played for his boyhood club since December 12, and joined Aston Villa on loan in early February. The Spanish champions have reportedly been his preferred destination since he was dropped by United manager Ruben Amorim. Britain's Press Association said talks were progressing on a deal to take Rashford to Barcelona, with a season-long loan including an option to buy being worked on. Rashford is among five players to have informed United they wish to explore a future away from Old Trafford, where he came through the academy and scored 138 goals in 426 first-team appearances. The England international admitted he was "ready for a new challenge" in December and last month revealed he would like to play alongside Barcelona's teenage prodigy Lamine Yamal. Rashford has trained away from Amorim's first-team squad since pre-season began. Barcelona sporting director Deco said in May that he liked Rashford and head coach Hansi Flick described the forward as a "fantastic player". Rashford does not have a squad number at United having lost the 10 shirt to Brazil forward Matheus Cunha, who arrived at Old Trafford during the current transfer window along with left-back Diego Leon. Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo is expected to join them after United finally struck a deal with Brentford worth an initial £65 million ($87 million). United will likely have to fund any further deals through departures. Even if Rashford were to leave initially on loan, the savings on the wage bill would be significant. Barcelona had looked set to sign Spain winger Nico Williams but the 23-year-old recently signed a new 10-year contract at Athletic Bilbao. The Catalan giants won a league and cup double last season -- Flick's first campaign at the club. jw/nf

Blackburn Rovers player ratings with 9/10 in impressive performance
Blackburn Rovers made it back-to-back wins in pre-season as Dion De Neve's first goal gave them a 1-0 win over Everton. Valerien Ismael's side were impressive in the first half. They showed good intensity off the ball and looked a threat when they had it. De Neve scored the winner after just eight minutes, rounding off a brilliant team move. Ryan Hedges played the pass which sprung Callum Brittain in-behind and he crossed for the new arrival to finish at the back post. Both goalkeepers made good saves to prevent any more goals. Balazs Toth denied Iliman Ndiaye whilst Mark Travers impressively picked Harry Pickering's free-kick out of the top corner. Here's how The Lancashire Telegraph scored the players' performances, with a six representing par for the course. (Remember, they're just friendlies!) Balazs Toth - 8 A quiet opening half but a string of saves after the break. The most notable was to deny Ndiaye, low down to his left. Strong in commanding his area. Callum Brittain - 8 No sign of downing tools this week. A really strong performance from the right-back against Premier League talent. Set up De Neve's goal with a great burst down the flank. Dom Hyam - 7 Rock-solid as ever at the back. Kept the ball well and defended strongly. Scott Wharton - 9 Didn't put a foot wrong on his first start of pre-season. Gave Beto very little change and was clever with his distribution. Looked very sharp. Yuri Ribeiro - 6 A few misplaced passes but that's what pre-season is for. Lewis Travis - 7 A little bit of afters in the middle, ensuring there was still some bite to this friendly clash. Strong and competitive in the middle. Sondre Tronstad - 6 Still finding his sharpness in some moments but a good showing in the middle. Ryan Hedges - 7 Really bright in the first half. Played the decisive pass to spring Brittain, which created the goal. Looks far more comfortable on the right. Todd Cantwell - 8 First of all, the work rate and intensity was most notable. Really bought in to the pressing and harrying. Some nice touches on the ball too, including the dummy for the goal. Dion De Neve - 7 Took his goal nicely at the back post, making sure he was in the right position to take advantage. Yuki Ohashi - 7 Must be a nightmare to play against; constantly buzzing around. Some nice link-up play but no real sight of goal. Substitutions (Made on the hour unless stated otherwise) Nick Michalski - 6 Quick of his line and alert to a few situations but not tested in the final half hour. Harry Pickering - 7 Beautiful free-kick looked destined for the top corner but for a brilliant save from Travers. Kristi Montgomery - 6 Started at right-back and then moved into midfield after 10 minutes. Looked comfortable in the middle which is where he's played most recently in the 21s. George Pratt - 7 Did well with a few situations where he read the danger early and snuffed it out. Lorenze Mullarkey-Matthews - 6 Worked hard but didn't see much of the ball. Augustus Kargbo - 6 As direct as ever, running at players whenever he got the chance. That final ball just needs some refinement. Igor Tyjon - 6 Picked up some nice positions playing off the front but didn't have the final action. Makhtar Gueye - 6 Battled with the centre-backs and put himself about. Tom Atcheson (71') - 6 Solid when he came on after looking a little shaky at Accrington. Matty Litherland (71') - 6 Slotted in at right-back with little issue. John Buckley (71)' - 6 One of the most senior heads on the pitch by the time he was on. Controlled an increasingly stretched game. Unused substitutes: Goddard, Batty. Attendance: 11,339
