Sam Thompson ‘punched by kid' after visiting one of UK's 'worst seaside resorts'

Daily Mirror3 days ago
Former Made in Chelsea star Sam Thompson admits he has never been on a caravan holiday, but has visited one UK seaside town that welcomes six million tourists a year
Sam Thompson was 'punched in the b******s by a kid' when he visited the city dubbed one of the UK's worst seaside destinations. The former Made in Chelsea star says he was in Southend-on-Sea when he was struck by the youngster.

The city was recently named among the worst seaside locations by consumer champions Which?. It propped up the table of seaside resorts along with Bognor Regis, Bangor in Wales, and Clacton.

The I'm a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! winner opened up about his visit to Southend after being quizzed if he had ever been on a caravan holiday by pal Pete Wicks. On their Staying Relevant podcast, Sam replied: 'No.'

It led to reality TV star Pete reminiscing about his childhood holidays to towns such as Frinton and Saint Osyth in Essex. The former TOWIE star said: '[We] used to go to the static caravan homes.
'You'd go there, there'd be a clubhouse where all that sort of s**t goes on, there'd be weird forced fun activities during the day that even as a child I'd be miserable to do, and you'd get to play in the arcades down at Southend. You'd go to Frinton and the beaches.'

It prompted Sam to recall the moment he visited Southend. He replied: 'I've been to Southend. I got punched in the b******s by a kid.'
Pete responded: 'Yeah…let's go back. Not for that reason. But a typical old-school staycation like that, I think is fundamental to growing up, especially if you don't grow up with a lot of things.
'They were f*****g brilliant. Like honestly brilliant. I used to love the caravan type of stuff.'

It would seem that Sam isn't the only person who doesn't have fond memories of Southend. The Essex city was recently branded the 'worst place on Earth' by Which? readers.
Its beaches scored a lowly two stars while the city's scenery only bagged one star. Despite the criticism however, Southend attracts around six million visitors each year.
In September 2024, the city was branded a 'no-go zone' due to street drinking, reports EssexLive. While visitors and locals alike have taken to Tripadvisor to share their reviews of the beach in Southend.

One wrote: 'Went with my family on a trip to Southend. A few years back this beach was in an absolutely horrible state, so we came back to this beach to see if there were any improvements. However, results were very unexpected and shocking."
Another reviewer said it was the "worst place on Earth", adding: "Avoid the beach, avoid the city, avoid the people."
Not everyone was critical however. One visitor to the city praised the beach, writing: 'The beach is generally kept clean and tidy, if you're local it's nice to visit early in the day or later in the evening when the tourists aren't swarming the place but on a sunny bank holiday it is absolutely packed with people from out of the area."

Josie Gibson will soon be seen on ITV's This Morning as she stands in for Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard while they take a break this summer. She'll also star in an ITV show. This Morning's Josie Gibson is set to transform her Somerset abode into the "dream home" she's always envisioned in an upcoming ITV series. ‌ The 40 year old television personality, who rose to fame after clinching victory on Big Brother in 2010, has since presented a variety of shows including Channel 5's Around The World In First Class and Channel 4's Ultimate Christmas Gift Guide With Josie Gibson. ‌ In addition to finishing fourth in I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! in 2023, Gibson has become a familiar face on This Morning and is gearing up to cover for Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard during their summer hiatus. ‌ Hailing from Bristol, the TV favourite is embarking on a project to revamp her Somerset residence with an emphasis on sustainable living. Her plans include installing a subterranean heat pump, cultivating her own produce, and establishing beehives on the property. Josie expressed her aspirations: "My dream is to build a house as eco and luxurious as possible, where you are immersed in the sanctuary of nature." ‌ She further elaborated on her vision: "I want to use the acres of land to try my best to have a little small holding. I want bees, birds, badgers to all live in harmony." However, she also voiced concerns about the project: "Though I'm becoming increasingly concerned that my harmonious dream is slowly turning into a construction nightmare. I can't wait to bring the audience along on this journey with me." Gibson won't be tackling the renovation solo; she'll be drawing on the expertise of her brothers, Josh and Charlie, who are scrap metal traders, and her cousin Tom. ‌ Together, they aim to construct a haven complete with an on-site gym, a walk-in wardrobe, and tinted windows. The seven-part series, Josie Gibson's Big Country Build, is set to air across ITV1, STV, ITVX and STV Player in 2026. ‌ Katie Rawcliffe, Director of entertainment and daytime for ITV, commented: "She's done a stint in the jungle and tackled all manner of outlandish tasks on This Morning, but our audiences are about to see a completely new side to Josie Gibson as she embraces country life and takes sustainable living to a whole new level." In a recent interview, Josie opened up about the challenges of juggling motherhood with her career. She said: "I often suffer from mum guilt. I beat myself up that I'm not with Reggie all the time because you never get that time back with your kid." Despite the tough choices she faced while forging her path in television, Josie now enjoys a more harmonious work-life balance. Reflecting on her journey, she revealed: "There was a point where I worked a lot - far too much - but I needed to get where I wanted to be, and I sacrificed time with him and that was really sad. These days, I have much more of a balance."

Coronation Street Mick actor Joe Layton 'set for Hollywood' after ITV soap exit

Coronation Street actor Joe Layton has played the role of Mick Michaelis on the cobbles since earlier this year but could soon be switching Weatherfield for Hollywood Coronation Street's Joe Layton, known for his role as the menacing Mick Michaelis, could be on the brink of a major Hollywood breakthrough. Joe burst onto the scene earlier this year as the ruthless thug Mick, alongside his partner Lou (Farrel Hegarty). ‌ Labelled as "nightmare neighbours," the pair quickly became notorious for causing chaos. In a shocking turn of events in May, Mick brutally murdered Weatherfield's beloved Craig Tinker ( Colson Smith) in a harrowing alcohol-fuelled attack. ‌ It was then revealed that he also regularly abused Lou adding to the disdain for his character from viewers who were shocked to see how truly evil he was capable of being. After Craig's tragic end, Mick found himself behind bars. However, this week saw an explosive development as he broke free from custody. ‌ In a desperate search for his child, Mick stabbed Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) before being caught again and sent back to prison. Now, with Mick's time on the cobbles drawing to a close, speculation is rife about actor Joe's next move with his frantic on-screen demeanour capturing the imagination of TV fans. Betway has provided odds on his next step that place Joe at a not too shabby 3/1 to hop over to rival soap EastEnders. But that isn't the only soap where he could show up, as Joe is also sitting at 5/1 to land a role on Channel 4's Hollyoaks. ‌ When it comes to reality TV prospects, he's got odds of 8/1 for I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! and 10/1 for Strictly Come Dancing where fans would get to learn more about him as opposed to his on-screen alter ego Mick. But it's not just small screen opportunities on the horizon for Joe. He could find himself making his way into the cinematic universe too. Bookies are betting that the big screen could come knocking and he might snag a role in a blockbuster Hollywood franchise. Joe currently stands at 16/1 to appear in a Marvel film, and 50/1 to potentially become the next James Bond. ‌ Mike Reading, spokesperson at Betway told the Daily Star: "After playing brutal villain Mick Michaelis on Coronation Street, Joe Layton is now a 3/1 shot to bring his bad-boy energy to EastEnders. "Having made headlines for his character's violent past and dramatic prison escape, Layton looks ready-made for the gritty world of Albert Square – pub bust-ups, family feuds, and a shady market hustle would suit him down to the ground! "Other potential next moves include jetting out to the jungle for I'm a Celeb (8/1), joining Strictly (10/1), or even a Marvel comeback (16/1) after previously starring in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but it's East London where punters think he's most likely to land next." Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
