Netflix fans left in 'a puddle of tears' by thriller so gripping they 'watched it in one sitting' - raving 'I was on the edge of my seat the entire time!'

Daily Mail07-05-2025
Netflix fans were left in 'a puddle of tears' after seeing a thriller so gripping they 'watched it in one sitting'.
The crime drama, titled Unseen, delves into the story of a house cleaner called Zenzi Mwale (Gail Mabalane), who is searching for her missing husband.
As the tale unravels, 'a dreaded criminal syndicate dredges up past tragedies and ultimately drives her to violence,' according to the synopsis.
Alongside Mabalane, the South African action series stars Waldemar Schultz, Dineo Langa and others.
The series debuted in 2023 and has seen two seasons so far, each consisting of six instalments.
All 12 episodes are available to stream on Netflix and fans have raved about the show online.
Some posted on Rotten Tomatoes: 'Great series, plot, characters and story development are very good in my opinion.
'It's visually uncompromising and brutal for the right reasons. Zenzi is an absolute hero of a character and a very very strong female lead. Just loved it.';
'A tight, illuminating script, strong performances. Great production values. Loved it. Bring on S2, please.'
Though not everyone was impressed and someone penned: 'The plot, while formulaic, kept my interest to a certain extent. Character development was weak, entirely plot-driven.'
While others raved about the series on X and said: ''Unseen' Season 2 is an exceptional South African series on Netflix.
'After the first season delivered flawlessly, I anticipated that Season 2 would be even more outstanding and it truly surpassed expectations.'
Another commented: 'Unseen season 2 was nothing short of amazing. I watched the series in one sitting and only took very quick bathroom breaks. I was literally glued to the edge of my seat the entire time!'
'Unseen on Netflix is pretty solid - hats off to the team at Gambit Films,' someone else penned.

According to Metro, one fan expressed how the show left them in a 'puddle of tears'.
Netflix fans have also been captivated by a British crime thriller that 'gives them chills' and even compared it to Vera and Black Mirror.
Three-part thriller Black Work first aired in 2015 on ITV but is still proving to be a hit with viewers.
Starring Sheridan Smith, Matthew McNulty and Oliver Woollford, the drama was created by Bridge of Spies writer Matt Charman.

UK cinemas to host KPop Demon Hunters sing-alongs

Younger audiences will be singing their hearts out in cinemas across the UK this month as KPop Demon Hunters arrives on the big screen for a series of special sing-along events. The unexpected Netflix hit, which has become the most popular animated film of all time on the streaming platform, has hooked children (and many parents) worldwide since its release in June. The film's soundtrack, meanwhile, is dominating the charts with more than 3bn global streams so far and the song Golden reaching No 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and the UK's official singles chart. The official video has been viewed on YouTube more than 130m times. KPop Demon Hunters follows the adventures of the girl group Huntr/x, made up of Rumi, Mira and Zoey, who use their secret identities as demon hunters to protect their fans from supernatural threats and face off against a rival band, Saja Boys, whose members are secretly demons. Tickets are now on sale for the screenings across the UK on 23 and 24 August. Netflix confirmed similar events will be available in the US and Canada on the same weekend. Along with demand for a sequel, there is also an insatiable demand for its merchandise, with Hunter/x T-shirts, hoodies and hats among the bestselling items on Netflix's website. Maggie Kang, the film's Korean-Canadian co-director, previously said she and her co-director, Chris Appelhans, had wanted the film's music to be 'really incredible and really speak to the K-pop fans and legitimately fit into the K-pop space'. In contrast, Hollywood animation is having a lacklustre summer at the box office and it is possible that not a single fully animated film will make the top 10. The Disney-Pixar original Elio has been trounced by 'live-action' remakes of Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon.

Netflix reveals major TV return for unrecognisable Peaky Blinders legend

When Cillian Murphy and Netflix combine, it's usually a match made in heaven. The Oppenheimer star has been a firm favourite with audiences since he first depicted Tommy Shelby in Steven Knight's Peaky Blinders back in 2013. But now, the streaming service has released the first-look images at the 49-year-old Irish actor as a headmaster at a last-chance reform school. The reinterpretation of Max Porter's Sunday Times bestseller, Shy, is set in the mid-90s and chronicles a pivotal day in the life of Steve (Murphy) and his pupils. The trailer also shows Shy (Jay Lycurgo), a troubled teenager, who wrestles with his impulse for self-destruction and violence. The film, titled Steve, will premiere in select cinemas on September 19n before it is officially released on Netflix on October 3. Elsewhere in Steve, Emily Watson, Tracey Ullman, Simbi Ajikawo and Roger Allam also star. Speaking to Deadline, Murphy – who won an Academy Award for Oppenheimer – said he has been a huge fan of Porter's writing. 'Max gave me that book in a proof edition before he finished it, and again it just broke my heart. 'They're the sorts of things I love as a reader and as a performer, so I really wanted to do something with him.' Reacting on social media, several fans shared their excitement for the new project. @Web3Alex_ said: 'Cillian Murphy and Jay Lycurgo teaming up for a 90s reform school drama makes STEVE sound like a gripping mix of grit and heart.' @RolandNorbertB added: 'Cillian Murphy AND a 90s England setting? Yeah, I'm watching this day one 🎬🔥' @TheCinemaura also said: 'That's going to be massive. I like Cillian Murphy.' Meanwhile, @krisfitt commented: 'Babe wake up academy award winner Cillian Murphy is on Netflix.' Directed by Tim Mielants, the film has writer Porter attached as an executive producer. It will also premiere next month at the Toronto International Film Festival. Got a story?
