
Wizz Air scraps dozens of routes as hot weather is breaking its planes
Wizz Air has scrapped a number of routes as "hot and harsh" weather is damaging its planes.
On Monday, the Hungarian airline announced that it would discontinue its Abu Dhabi operations starting in August.
Ticket sales have been halted from the Middle Eastern capital to Varna from July 14, followed by Belgrade on July 19, Tirana on July 20, Kutaisi on July 29, and Sarajevo on August 31.
Six additional routes will be temporarily suspended, including Krakow (July 29–September 19), Budapest (paused until September 1), Vienna (paused until September 21), Katowice (paused until October 26), and both Astana and Samarkand (paused until November 1). Services to Sofia and Cluj have already been discontinued, Aviation Weekly reports.
The publication also notes that Pratt & Whitney GTF engine issues have led to 20% of Wizz Air's Airbus A320neo-family fleet being grounded over the past financial year.
The budget airline currently operates more than 30 routes from its Abu Dhabi base.
Last month, Wizz Air CEO József Váradi said the carrier was strategically reducing operations in 'hot and harsh' environments. He explained that capacity would be reallocated to lower-risk areas to help reduce operating costs and prolong engine life.
'Hot and harsh is a significant issue which we are going to address,' the CEO said. 'That will not only lower operating costs and extend engine lifetime, but it will also increase productivity on sectors.'
In a statement issued this morning, the airline said three main "operational challenges over the past year" led to the decision to "suspend all locally based flight operations effective 1 September 2025". They are:
• Engine reliability constraints, particularly in hot and harsh environments, which have impacted aircraft availability and operational efficiency.
• Geopolitical volatility, which has led to repeated airspace closures and operational disruptions across the region, as well as weakened consumer demand.
• Regulatory barriers, which have limited the company's ability to access and scale in key markets.
Mr. Váradi added: "We have had a tremendous journey in the Middle East and are proud of what we have built. I thank our highly dedicated employees for their relentless efforts and commitment to developing the WIZZ brand in new and dynamic markets. However, the operating environment has changed significantly.
"Supply chain constraints, geopolitical instability, and limited market access have made it increasingly difficult to sustain our original ambitions. While this was a difficult decision, it is the right one given the circumstances. We continue to focus on our core markets and on initiatives that enhance Wizz Air's customer proposition and build shareholder value."
Passengers with existing bookings beyond 31 August will be contacted directly via email with options for refunds or alternative travel arrangements. Customers who booked through third-party providers are advised to contact their respective agents. The suspensions do not affect other flights of the Wizz Air group.
The announcements come as Wizz extends its operations in other markets, including by adding several new routes from its UK base at Luton Airport.
From last month, Wizz Air started whisking passengers away four times weekly from Gatwick to the quaint Polish city of Wroclaw. Come the start of August, Londoners will also have the chance to jet off from the same bustling hub to the Polish capital, Warsaw, and even Medina in Saudi Arabia.
Birmingham hasn't been left behind; the heart of the West Midlands gained thrice-weekly connections to Rome as of June, with future plans to link up with Sibiu and Suceava in Romania.
Last week Mirror Travel sat down with Yvonne Moynihan, the new managing director of the UK wing of the airline.
In a wide-ranging interview, she wanted the bag fees to be set for a hike due to upcoming European Union legislation. Ms Moynihan also admitted that she had recently been stung by the airline's hand-luggage rules, forking out for a £60 fine as a result.

Wizz Air quit Gulf after Abu Dhabi went back on deal, boss says
Wizz Air's decision to quit the Middle East was triggered by a row with its Abu Dhabi government partner over alleged favouritism shown to the Gulf state's airline, its chief executive has said. The budget airline last week suspended all flights from its Abu Dhabi hub, blaming the 'hot and harsh' climate, as high temperatures and sand particles degraded its engines. But Jozsef Varadi, chief executive of Wizz Air, told The Telegraph that the move was also driven by curbs imposed on its local division by the Abu Dhabi authorities. These included a refusal to let Wizz Air Abu Dhabi – a joint venture between Abu Dhabi and the airline – fly to India and Pakistan as previously agreed, despite the two countries having granted it access rights. Mr Varadi said the move was probably designed bolster Abu Dhabi's airline, Etihad, which is owned by the Gulf state. 'Six years ago, Abu Dhabi was booming and the whole system was supportive of bringing in an ultra-low-cost carrier,' he said. 'Everyone was contributing, without any discrimination between the home airlines. But that changed and it became a case of Etihad first, with everyone else subordinated. 'That is not what we agreed when we made a commitment to invest in Abu Dhabi and it's not a game we're prepared to play. We said at the beginning that we would not be coming to be a second-class citizen.' Wizz last week said it was abandoning the joint venture, which was established with the Abu Dhabi's sovereign wealth fund ADQ in 2019. Mr Varadi said the launch of flights to the Indian subcontinent had always been the venture's ultimate goal, with the region accounting for 60pc of the travel market from Abu Dhabi. He said: 'We all had an understanding that we would be accessing markets like India and Pakistan. It was specifically mentioned in our investment memorandum. 'We got designated by Abu Dhabi and we started working with India and Pakistan and both of them approved our designation. 'But at that point Abu Dhabi changed its mind and they decided to remove our designation and hand that over to Etihad. So we were excluded from more than half of the market. That is not acceptable and not how we do business.' Mr Varadi said the change in attitude coincided with the deepening of government efforts to focus Etihad more on local travel needs, rather than have it compete in global markets with Emirates and Qatar Airways. Etihad slashed its aircraft order book and cut long-haul routes as a result of the rethink, and in October 2022 came under the ownership of ADQ, which also held a 51pc stake in Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, to Wizz's 49pc. 'People don't like flying over war zones' The chief executive said the escalating conflict in the Gulf has also influenced the decision to quit the region, with a quarter of Wizz flights forced to divert in the past 12 months, increasing costs and putting off travellers. He said: 'Demand is a lot weaker than before. People don't like flying over rockets and war zones, and this has become a regional conflict. It's no longer local.' Wear and tear issues with the Pratt & Whitney engines on Wizz's jets, which grounded 20pc of the fleet, were a further factor, being more acute in the 'hot and harsh' environment of Abu Dhabi and nearby destinations such as Saudi Arabia. He said: 'The engines were degrading three times faster, so it became incredibly punitive from an engine lifetime and cost perspective.' Mr Varadi said Wizz, which is due to provide an earnings update on Thursday, will delay orders from Airbus as it falls back on core European markets, where it competes with Ryanair and EasyJet. While based in Budapest Wizz is listed in London and has major bases at Gatwick and Luton.

France's eight weeks of summer holidays, or England's six? I've done both and know which one I prefer
Remember the summer holidays of your childhood – the seemingly endless, sunny days many of us look back on fondly? Those six 'precious' weeks look very different when you're a parent. Having to feed, entertain, look after and fund your offspring during the extended break can sometimes make the summer seem endless for all the wrong reasons. Parents in England where, as in Scotland and Wales, the school summer break is six weeks, have complained that this is too long, and are backing a reduction to four weeks. Pity then the parents in mainland Europe: French school holidays last for eight weeks. In some regions of Italy, summer is a whopping 14-weeks long. Having birthed and brought up my five children in France, only moving back to England in April last year when my eldest was 14 and my youngest nine, I've experienced summers on both sides of the Channel. And it will be no surprise that I prefer the six-week version. But not for the reasons you might think. I'm lucky. I may have five children to entertain, but I work from home and have a husband who's retired. I have to combat additional noise and break up the odd skirmish, but at least I don't have to worry about childcare during the summer months. Then again, in France, nor did most of my friends. France is set up differently for the summer break. For starters, there are affordable play schemes in most areas. In my small town in Limousin, children could have a day of fun, sport and supervision from 7.30am to 6.30pm, plus a cooked meal, for as little as €9 (about £7.80). Rather than the odd snatched moment or week off, many children in France benefit from a healthy dose of family time over the summer as their parents are also on holiday. August is sacrosanct in France. Many businesses close or pare down, and people often take a fortnight – or even the month – off. (Need a routine scan in August? Good luck: even hospital services seem lighter on staff during the summer.) And while it's traditionally expensive to take holidays during peak times, in France help is available to those on modest incomes. The Vacaf voucher is a means-tested benefit that families can offset against a holiday at more than 7,000 hotels or holiday parks, saving up to 70%. Money won't be made tighter by 'back to school' shopping, either. France gives parents a 'rentrée' payment of more than €400 a child in August to cope with these costs. It's means tested, but generously so, taking into account income and family size. If additional childcare is needed, help will probably be available from grandparents. Of course, many UK-based grandparents also help with childcare, but in France it seemed the expected norm rather than the generous exception. Kids are shipped off to Mamie and Papy for two weeks at a time, leaving parents free to enjoy the sunshine. Eight weeks seemed long, but in France they were manageable. Even – whisper it – fun. So why do I prefer the six-week option? Well, first, it's better educationally. The 'summer slippage' children experience from the six-week break is well documented; pupils are thought to lose up to 40% of the gains they have made over the school year during this time. Another two weeks to forget everything could be catastrophic. And, however well supported children are, eight weeks is a long time to be away from the structure and routine of school. By the end the kids seemed feral, and were so accustomed to getting up later they found it hard to adjust to the 6am start. Despite moaning that their French friends are already sunning themselves, my children have had fun during those 'extra' two weeks at school. Lessons have been wound down and learning tied up. School plays have been performed, awards dished out, sports days (something they didn't experience in France) enjoyed. Classes have met their new teachers for September, and new schools have been visited. There's a sense of growing anticipation of the break ahead when teachers and pupils relax and (dare I say) enjoy each other's company. It's true that, in my experience, not a huge amount of learning occurs during this time. But that doesn't mean there isn't value in spending another fortnight in the classroom. Some might argue that even six weeks is too long for a summer break. But despite the summer slippage, I'd be loath to have holidays reduced further. This six-week break is a childhood rite of passage and I'd hate to see kids lose it. (Plus, as an ex-teacher, I know it's one of the few times staff get a proper break not filled entirely with marking and planning – mess with it at your peril.) Instead, imagine if the UK government took a lesson from France and provided better, affordable care for families, and helped those who need support take their holiday during these expensive months (not necessarily by subsidising, but by staggering school holidays across the country or working with providers to ensure fairer pricing). Brooklyn Beckham shakes off family troubles by leaping off a yacht in St. Tropez
BROOKLYN Beckham is like passing ships with his feuding family as he holidays in St. Tropez, just as they fly to the US. The wannabe chef, 26, was photographed jumping into the sea off an 88-metre yacht, featuring a gym, beauty salon and nine cabins, which he is staying on with his wife Nicola Peltz. The luxury getaway for Brooklyn, who lives in Los Angeles, means he has avoided being in the same country as his parents, David and Victoria, as well as his brothers Romeo and Cruz. They have flown to Miami for their summer holiday, along with Brooklyn's sister Harper. He had previously posted a photo of him, Nicola and sister Harper for the latter's 14th birthday. This was amid his brothers Romeo and Cruz blocking Brooklyn on social media. The younger boys were accused of turning their backs on Brooklyn for good, and sending the family deeper into crisis. Model Brooklyn, 26, and wife Nicola, 30, were said to be 'blindsided' after learning of the snub. The feud has been bubbling for several months.
