PETALING JAYA: Police have launched an investigation after a Taiwanese woman alleged that she was extorted by police officers during a roadblock in SS2 earlier today.
The claim, made in a viral Facebook post at 1.41am on July 17, prompted a response from the district police headquarters, which confirmed the incident is being probed under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion.
If found guilty, the offence carries a sentence of up to 10 years' jail, a fine, whipping, or any combination of the three upon conviction.
Petaling Jaya police chief, Assistant Commissioner Shahrulnizam Ja'afar, said the case is being taken seriously, adding that there would be no compromise with any officer found abusing their position.
"This includes cases involving both locals and foreigners," he said, highlighting the force's commitment to integrity and accountability.

Lula slams US sanctions on Brazilian judges in Bolsonaro case

BRASILIA: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Saturday denounced US visa sanctions on judges in the coup case against former leader Jair Bolsonaro, a right-wing ally of Donald Trump. "My solidarity and support go to the justices of the Supreme Federal Court, who have been affected by yet another arbitrary and completely baseless measure by the United States government," Lula said in a statement posted on X. "The interference of one country in another's justice system is unacceptable and violates the basic principles of respect and sovereignty between nations." Bolsonaro is on trial for allegedly seeking to stay in power by overturning the 2022 election won by Lula. Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes ruled Friday that Bolsonaro must wear an electronic monitoring device, stay home at night and stay off social media as he awaits a verdict. Hours later the United States revoked the visa for Moraes and his "allies" on the court, as well as their immediate family members. "Brazilian Supreme Federal Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes's political witch hunt against Jair Bolsonaro created a persecution and censorship complex so sweeping that it not only violates basic rights of Brazilians, but also extends beyond Brazil's shores to target Americans," Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement. Moraes, one of the judges in Bolsonaro's trial for allegedly seeking to nullify Lula's election victory, said the restrictions were necessary given the "hostile acts" against Brazil by the accused and his son and former politician Eduardo Bolsonaro. He said in a ruling Saturday that Eduardo Bolsonaro "intensified the illicit conduct... through various posts and attacks on the Federal Supreme Court on social media" in reaction to Friday's ruling. Moraes cited a Facebook post in which the younger Bolsonaro called the judge "a gangster in robes." Both Trump and Bolsonaro have claimed to be victims of political persecution, and the former frequently verbally attacks judges at home over their rulings. - AFP

‘Organiser failed to comply with syariah-related conditions'

PETALING JAYA: Spiritual intimacy and marital programme organiser eHati International Sdn Bhd had failed to fully comply with the syariah -related conditions issued during a previous clarification session in 2022, said Selangor Islamic Religious Department director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad. He said in a statement yesterday that the department had denied giving formal approval for the eHati programme. 'A clarification panel appointed by the department obtained an explanation from the organisers of the eHati programme following a complaint received from a participant. 'The complainant at the time alleged that activities contradicting syariah law had taken place during the programme.' The organisers were shown to have used a video demonstrating female 'self-pleasure' as a method to strengthen marital intimacy. The panel advised that such content must be removed, and any future programmes must strictly comply with syariah principles. The department also recommended that a disclaimer be included stating that the video content was meant solely for married couples. It emphasised that these recommendations did not constitute blanket approval for the entire programme. The department said the organisers failed to resubmit the complete programme module for review after the panel's guidance, effectively bypassing the vetting process. 'Had the organisers complied with the conditions set in 2022, the recent incident alleged to have occurred during the eHati programme at IDCC Shah Alam would not have happened.' The director also said the Selangor Islamic Religious Council is currently revising its guidelines on religious and spiritual programmes to ensure stricter compliance and clarity moving forward. Meanwhile, police have also launched an inquiry paper to identify any possible criminal offences under the Penal Code related to the programme. On July 13, Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said statements would be taken to verify allegations, including claims that certain types of water used during the session caused hallucinations. The programme's founders Diyana Tahir and Rahim Shukor have been remanded for three days for investigation, along with four others who attended the eHati Love Intensive event, and allegedly removed their clothes during the session.

Disabled baker scammed of over RM500k in fake Tiktok job offer

GEORGE TOWN: A disabled baker in Penang has lost more than RM500,000 after falling for a bogus job offer advertised on TikTok, according to acting state police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin. He said the incident began in early December last year when the 45-year-old man was first contacted via WhatsApp in early December last year by a woman who claimed to offer a lucrative job selling children's toys through the platform. "He was promised profits of 10 to 15 per cent and was asked to make payments to cover the cost of goods allegedly ordered by customers," he said in a statement on Saturday (July 19) night. The victim proceeded to make 41 cash deposit transactions amounting to RM523,350 into five different bank accounts between Dec 18, 2024, and July 14 this year. Despite repeated payments, the promised returns never materialised, and the suspect continued requesting additional funds under the guise of job-related expenses. The victim lodged a report on Friday (July 18) at the Timur Laut district police headquarters (IPD) upon realising he had been scammed, with the case being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. - Bernama
