National two-minute silence to be held for 80th anniversary of VJ Day

Yahoo5 days ago
A national two-minute silence will be held to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VJ Day.
VJ Day – marking victory over Imperial Japan, which signalled the very end of the Second World War – will also be marked with a series of events.
A service of remembrance held at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire on August 15 will feature 400 members of the armed forces, the Red Arrows and historic aircraft from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
A national silence will be observed at noon.
Four days of events were held in May to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day, which marked the end of the Second World War in Europe.
But 80 years ago, thousands of British and Commonwealth military personnel continued to fight Japanese forces in Asia and the Pacific for a further three months.
The service of remembrance will be run in partnership with the Royal British Legion (RBL) and will be attended by Second World War veterans, VJ association members, senior politicians and military personnel, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport said.
Second World War veteran and RBL ambassador Tom Berry, 101, from Cheshire, who was serving on HMS Tartar in the Pacific when Japan surrendered, said: 'For veterans like me and all those who carried on fighting until VJ Day was announced, this will be a very emotional day – a moment in history.
'I'll be watching the service at home, and I'd ask the country to do the same – to stop and remember all those who gave so much for our freedoms, and those who never made it back.'
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said: 'Those who continued to fight bravely in Asia and the Pacific in those last few months of the Second World War must never be forgotten.
'It is so important for us as a nation to come together on this important anniversary to remember our VJ Day veterans and hear their stories first-hand so we can ensure that their legacy is passed on to future generations and their sacrifice is never forgotten.'
Defence Secretary John Healey said: 'VJ Day was the final victory in a war that changed the world, and we honour those who served in the Far East with enduring gratitude.
'Just as we proudly marked VE Day, we reflect on the courage, sacrifice and resilience shown by so many to secure peace.
'Their legacy must never be forgotten, and it's our duty to pass their stories on to future generations.'

Landscape charity launches Lakes litter survey

A landscape charity has launched an online survey in an effort to get a clearer idea about the scale of littering and illegal camping in a national park. Friends of the Lake District said it wanted to find out whether people living in the area think the problem is becoming more widespread. The findings of the questionnaire will be used by the organisation to campaign for measures such as more frequent visits to hotspots by rangers, tougher action against anyone found to be responsible for leaving a mess and more effective prevention steps. Valleys, roadsides and lake shores are among the areas commonly seeing problems, it says. The group said people leaving rubbish behind, as well as those camping without the landowner's permission, "seems to have grown as a problem" in recent years. It added it comes "in the wake of a slew of social media videos of influencers sharing their experiences" in the area without sharing how to visit responsibly and follow the Countryside Code" – a set of guidelines aimed at protecting the outdoors. The role of influencers has been in the spotlight and in May the Lake District National Park Authority announced it would pay some to help discourage people from fly camping and littering. Wildfire risk Kay Andrews, the organisation's engagement lead said: "The lasting effects of leaving rubbish in the landscape aren't just visual. "Litter can kill wildlife and livestock, damage soils, leach into water systems and cause health hazards, while barbecues and fires can easily cause wildfires in summer. "When people act in such a thoughtless manner, it ruins the enjoyment of the beautiful countryside of the Lake District for other visitors and causes affected communities stress and upset". Posts about the Lake District are incredibly popular on platforms such as Instagram, with about 6.4m tags for the location used, compared to 2.4m for the Peak District and 1.9m for Northumberland. Fire breaks out at recycling centre

A fire has broken out at a recycling centre in Shrewsbury. It started shortly before 05:00 BST at the Veolia site on Battlefield Enterprise Park. About 30 firefighters were deployed at its peak. The blaze was still ongoing on Saturday afternoon, but Shropshire fire and Rescue Service said it was under control and there are no casulaties. The fire was initially reported as involving 80 tonnes of waste, but Mark Price, area commander at the fire service, said crews arrived to find one bale alight. He said crews were likely to be at the scene for some time due to the amount of smoke in the building but the incident was "contained". The fire service has advised people living nearby to close their windows and doors, although Mr Price said smoke levels were minimal. Follow BBC Shropshire on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X and Instagram.
