IPOH - At least 15 people were killed in an accident involving a bus carrying students from Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) and a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) on the East-West Highway in Banun, Gerik, early this morning.
A statement from the Hulu Perak operations control centre of the Civil Defence Force (APM) said that they received an emergency call from Gerik Hospital regarding the collision at 1.10 am.

The statement confirmed that 48 people were involved in the crash, with thirteen victims pronounced dead at the scene, while two more died in the hospital. Four others sustained injuries.
It is understood that the bus was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to Tanjung Malim, Perak.
Meanwhile, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir said the ministry will provide all necessary assistance to those involved in the tragedy.
He extended his condolences to the families of the victims, who included members of the UPSI community.
"Further information will be updated in due course,' he said in a Facebook post today.
In a separate statement, Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Sayani Saidon said the bus and the Perodua Alza were travelling in the same direction, from Jeli, Kelantan, to Gerik, at the time of the incident.
She confirmed that 48 individuals were involved in the crash, which caused the bus to overturn and the MPV to skid into a ditch.
"Some victims managed to exit the vehicle on their own, some were thrown out, while others remained trapped inside the bus.
"The operations commander cut open the rear section of the bus using hydraulic tools to create a working space," she said, adding that once access was gained, six victims were found still inside the bus. Photo courtesy of Fire and Rescue Department.
Sayani said fire department personnel stabilised the injured victims and extracted them from the bus before handing them over to the Ministry of Health (MOH) for further treatment.
"Injured victims, including those who managed to exit the vehicle on their own, received initial treatment from MOH personnel at the scene before being sent to the hospital," she said.
Meanwhile, UPSI deputy vice-chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Prof Dr Norkhalid Salimin said most of the bus passengers were UPSI students returning to campus in Tanjong Malim from Terengganu after the Aidiladha holidays.
"They had gathered in Jerteh and chartered a private bus to return to campus after celebrating the festive break in their respective hometowns," he said. - BERNAMA

Gerik crash: Bus driver told family not to visit him in hospital

KOTA BARU: The bus driver involved in the tragic crash that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students in Gerik yesterday has asked his family not to visit him in Taiping Hospital. Mohd Amirul Fadhil Zulkifle said he made the decision as his 39-year-old wife and their three children were still in shock following the incident. "My family, especially my wife, is deeply affected after learning that I was involved in a crash that killed 15 students. "Her emotional state is still unstable, so I told them not to visit me for now. I've only asked them to pray for my recovery," he said. The 39-year-old, who hails from Kampung Kuala Besut, Terengganu, also appealed to the public not to blame his family for what had happened. Amirul, who recently underwent surgery for severe cuts on his fingers and hand caused by broken glass, said his condition is improving. "Once again, I would like to extend my deepest apologies to the families of the victims and the students involved in the crash," he added. He also revealed that he previously worked as a lorry driver before taking up a part-time job with the bus company. It was reported yesterday that the bus, which was carrying 42 UPSI students, was on its way from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's main campus when it was involved in a collision with a Perodua Alza along the East-West Highway. Thirteen students died at the scene of the crash, while two others were pronounced dead at the hospital.

Kedah JPN to monitor teacher couple in UPSI bus crash

NIBONG TEBAL: The Kedah State Education Department (JPN) has been tasked with monitoring the condition and welfare of a teacher couple and their two children who were injured in the fatal bus crash that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students in Gerik, Perak. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the family of four, who were travelling in a Perodua Alza when it was reportedly rear-ended by the bus, are currently receiving treatment at Baling Hospital, Kedah. 'Their welfare is now under the ministry's supervision and immediate assistance will be provided,' she told reporters during a visit to Universiti Sains Malaysia's engineering campus for a Form Six student intake event today. The crash occured early Monday morning when a chartered bus carrying UPSI students from Jertih, Terengganu to Tanjung Malim, Perak, veered off course and collided with the Alza driven by 37-year-old Mohd Lutfi Radzi. Fadhlina also extended her condolences to the families of the victims, especially the UPSI students, describing the loss of life as a major blow to the future of the country's teaching profession. While the bus involved was privately chartered by students, she stressed that the ministry has strict standard operating procedures (SOPs) in place for student travel, including mandatory safety checks. On a separate matter, Fadhlina said the event today also marked the launch of the Form Six University Campus Education Programme, a pilot initiative jointly implemented with the Higher Education Ministry involving Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Under the programme, students will undergo 18 months of pre-university study in a university campus setting. 'A total of 100 places are offered at UKM and 60 at USM. Over 30 students have registered today and we expect more to fill the remaining places,' she said.
