Govt has failed to offer relief to flood victims: Akhilesh

on Monday said even as two dozen districts – including Prayagraj and Varanasi – were hit by floods, the BJP govt has failed to extend relief to people in the affected areas.
"When the UP BJP can organise public meetings and rallies for the 'super VVIP', why isn't it conducting relief and rescue operations in flood hit regions of the state," Akhilesh said, adding that the situation was 'concerning' in Prayagraj and Varanasi where people were using boats to commute through lanes and bylanes in residential localities which were inundated in flood waters.
The former UP CM said there was an acute shortage of food and clean drinking water for people stranded in flood-hit areas.
"Sick people, particularly children, pregnant women and senior citizens, are not getting proper medicines as health services have come to a standstill. There is no power supply in localities facing floods which has only added to the crisis," Akhilesh said.
He further said: "More than Rs 20,000 crore each were spent in Prayagraj and Varanasi in the name of Smart City projects but the flood situation in both the districts has not changed.

The roads are filled with potholes and rainwater in the two districts," he said.
People are unable to perform the last rites of their loved ones because the cremation grounds are inundated, Akhilesh said.
"Despite such a crisis, what has left the common man more agitated is that the govt officials responsible for relief operations are more focussed on getting their photographs clicked distributing relief material rather than helping the needy," Akhilesh said.
He said there was a serious threat of outbreak of infectious diseases but there seem to be no plan to tackle such situation. He said floodwaters have entered shops and business establishments as well as farm fields leading to heavy financial and crops losses.
'SP TV' launched
Lucknow: Samajwadi Party has launched its YouTube channel – 'SP TV' – which will play messages and statements of party president Akhilesh Yadav in the form of a news bulletin every evening. The news bulletin will be presented by party functionary Naved Siddiqui who has earlier given voice over to several hit campaigns of the party during elections.
