Viktor Gyokeres breaks silence on transfer drama with blunt 22-word statement as Man Utd and Arsenal battle for star
VIKTOR GYOKERES has bluntly broken his silence on his transfer fall-out with Sporting Lisbon chiefs with a brief 22-word statement. The Sweden striker has reportedly come to blows with Sporting bosses after trying to force through a dream move to the Premier League. 5 Gyokeres, 27, is allegedly furious with Sporting for going back on their word over a promise to lower his £84million release clause and plans not to play for the club again. He believes he had a gentleman's agreement to leave the Portuguese giants for £50million with a further £8million in add-ons, but that claim has been denied by president Frederico Varandas. The former Coventry striker then reportedly threatened to go on strike while vowing not to play for the club again if they don't lower their offer. But Varandas insisted he will not be bullied into letting the Arsenal and Manchester United target move to the Prem on the cheap this summer. Varandas said: ' Sporting will not accept blackmail and insults – you should know me better by now.' But Gyokeres has now tried to play down the squabble rumours by throwing doubt on some of the reports with a short statement on social media. He wrote on his Instagram story on Thursday evening: "There is a lot of talks at the moment, most of it is false. I will speak when the time is right." It also comes after reports claimed that Arsenal submitted a new bid for Gyokeres on Wednesday, with his agent Hasan Cetinkaya visiting London to fast-track the transfer. 5 5 But Varandas statement also read: "I can guarantee that Viktor Gyokeres will not leave for €60m+10m (£51m+£8.5m) because I never promised him that. "This game that the agent is playing only makes the situation worse. To this day, Sporting has not had an offer for Viktor, neither today nor last season." Inside Viktor Gyokeres' glamorous life, from dating fellow footballer and actress to luxury holidays around world "It was agreed that Sporting would not demand the release clause at the end of the following season, especially because he was going to be 27." The Swede is one of the most in-demand players this summer after scoring a staggering 97 goals in 102 matches for Sporting since joining in the summer of 2023. Last season, he netted he netted 54 times in 52 outings - including a Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City, while 39 of those goals came in just 33 league games. Despite United's interest, Arsenal remain favourites to nab him, with new director of football Andrea Berta a big fan from his days at Atletico Madrid. Gyokeres has removed any reference to Sporting on his Instagram account, having also got rid of any mention of Sweden and Nike. He has three years remaining on his contract in Lisbon, but he is determined to take on a new challenge after just two years at the club, where he won the league twice, and completed a domestic double this season. United boss Ruben Amorim, who managed Gyokeres at Sporting, has since been linked with a shock move for Liverpool and Chelsea target Hugo Ekitike. 5

George Russell reignites war of words with nemesis Max Verstappen as he claims Red Bull star tried to 'run me off the road' in Spanish GP crash
George Russell claimed Max Verstappen tried to 'scare' him but failed when they collided in Spain last week, and added that the Dutchman would deserve a ban if tried it again. Verstappen was handed a 10-second penalty and three penalty points for his hot-headed move into the British driver at 140mph. The quadruple world champion was angry at being asked by his Red Bull team – incorrectly as the stewards deemed – to hand back his place to Russell after an earlier skirmish. They made contact, in a move he later took responsibility for, towards the end of the race in Barcelona. Verstappen finished 10th, after his punishment was calculated, and Russell fourth. Yesterday in Montreal ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, Russell said: 'I think he was trying to run me off the road, but I don't believe he was trying intentionally to crash into me. 'I think he wanted to just sort of scare me a bit, but he just misjudged it. 'It wasn't going to scare me. It was just all a bit surprising.' Verstappen would receive a one-race ban if he landed another point on his licence, to go from 11 to 12 points or beyond, in the next few weeks. Only Kevin Magnussen has ever previously been banned. Russell said: 'That's why you've got the penalty points there – if you keep driving recklessly, you'll get a race ban. You've got that in your own hands and it doesn't go without risk. 'If he gets his 12 points it wouldn't be unjust.'

Jake Stewart sprints to Dauphiné win on stage five as Evenepoel holds lead despite fall
The British rider Jake Stewart won a sprint finish to triumph in the fifth stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné on Thursday as Remco Evenepoel held on to the race lead. Stewart claimed his first career victory in a World Tour race, edging the bunched finale ahead of Axel Laurance and Søren Waerenskjold after the hilly 183km run from Saint-Priest to Macon. 'That one feels good,' said the 25-year-old who finished fifth in Sunday's opening stage in Montlucon. 'The boys backed me … and the team backed me, they did an awesome job, so I'm just so happy that I could finish it off for them.' The Israel Premier Tech team managed to win despite the race retirement of their German sprinter Pascal Ackermann, who fell during the stage. 'It's such a shame with Ackermann, he crashed again today, and it was handed over to me there for the final, but it was also a really good day for him, so I'm gutted that he didn't get to contest the finish,' added Stewart. Evenepoel, who took the yellow jersey in Wednesday's time-trial, crashed in the final kilometre but was able to resume without difficulty and lost no time in the overall standings. 'There are no major injuries, just small scratches,' said the Belgian. 'I was coming out of the roundabout, I wanted to accelerate, and I slipped. My hands were slippery from the wet weather, so maybe I slipped off the handlebars or started pedalling too early.' Evenepoel is expected to battle with Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar for the overall victory in the Alps. Jonathan Milan, winner of the second stage in Issoire on Monday, was the favourite in the event of a bunch sprint. On the Côte des Quatre Vents – the final climb of the stage over 5.4km at a 4.6% gradient – the towering Italian resisted the acceleration of Mathieu van der Poel's Alpecin-Deceuninck teammates. But he paid for his efforts afterwards, only finishing fifth in the sprint, despite having been ideally placed by his Lidl-Trek team.
