Kraken Place Goaltender Philipp Grubauer On Waivers
The #SeaKraken have placed goaltender Philipp Grubauer on waivers for the purpose of being assigned to the Coachella Valley @Firebirds.
— Seattle Kraken PR (@SeattleKrakenPR) January 29, 2025
The 33-year-old netminder had another difficult outing last night, allowing five goals on 22 shots. He now has a 5-15-1 record with a .866 SV% and a 3.83 GAA. Both stats are the worst of his career.
The Kraken signed Grubauer to a six-year, $5.9M AAV contract to be their starting goaltender back in July 2021 and is now in year four of the contract. His star-studded performances from the Washington Capitals and the Colorado Avalanche failed to come along with him to Seattle and has now left GM Ron Francis and the Kraken organization with limited options.
Dan Bylsma said the #SeaKraken hung Philipp Grubauer out to dry. We asked if that happens disproportionately more when Grubauer plays than when Daccord plays. Dan's response: 'No.' pic.twitter.com/ZmVexARzcy

His high cap hit and poor performances almost guarantee that he'll clear waivers and when he does, the German goaltender will join the Coachella Valley Firebirds. Grubauer has accumulated 105 games of AHL experience which came with the Hershey Bears. The last time Grubauer played an AHL game was in the 2014-15 season.
At the moment it's unknown what the plan is for Grubauer. How long he stays with the Firebirds and what happens if his struggling play continues in the AHL is undetermined.

Man United offered chance to sign another Bayern Munich defender
Manchester United are considering a repeat of last summer's transfer plan as the club weighs up a move for yet another Bayern Munich defender, according to a report from Germany. Twice bitten, not shy Matthijs de Ligt, 26, and Noussair Mazraoui, 27, were signed in a joint raid on the Allianz Arena last year to reunite the pair with Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, having both previously played for the Dutch manager with Ajax. Their combined fee totalled over £60 million with add-ons – an expensive outlay but a reasonable one given the pair's experience at the highest level in European football relative to their respective ages. Both De Ligt and Mazraoui are primed for important roles this season, despite Ten Hag having been replaced by Ruben Amorim in November, as the former Sporting manager's 3-4-2-1 system employs an extra central defender – a role both players are comfortable fulfilling. De Ligt has primarily operated as the central centre-back in this system (CCB) and the Dutchman offers more athleticism than his competitor for the position, Harry Maguire. Mazraoui, typically a fullback throughout his career, has often played as one of the two centre-backs on the outside, though the Morocco international can also play as a wing-back. But United are reported to be considering a move for another Bayern defender with France international Dayot Upamecano 'on their radar,' according to Christian Falk. Upamecano on the radar Upamecano, 26, is a central defender with outstanding athleticism and high levels of technical ability. He he won multiple trophies with Bayern as well as the World Cup with France in 2018. Speaking to German outlet CFBayern, Falk reveals the 'Red Devils have included the 26-year-old on their list of priorities, as his contract is set to expire next summer.' The Bundesliga expert states Upamecano's agent, Moussa Sissoko, has 'offered his client to Premier League clubs' with 'interest' from United. 'Bayern are pushing hard to reach an agreement with Upamecano over a new deal, but as of now, there has been little or no progress. The negotiations are dragging on for a long time, and it is leaving Bayern frustrated, as surely they do not want another Leroy Sane saga to unfold.' Bayern boss Vincent Kompany is reported to consider Upamecano a key part of his starting eleven alongside new signing Jonathan Tah, so it remains to be seen whether INEOS can prise another defensive jewel from Die Roten to join Amorim's revolution at Old Trafford. Former Premier League referee Coote gets 8-week ban for offensive comments about Klopp
LONDON (AP) — Former Premier League referee David Coote has been banned for eight weeks and ordered to take a face-to-face education program for making offensive comments about Jürgen Klopp in a private video that ended up being widely circulated on social media, leading to the match official getting fired. Coote admitted to a Football Association charge of acting 'in an improper manner' and/or using 'abusive and/or insulting words' in a video recorded around July 2020. Two videos, apparently filmed using a phone, circulated on social media appearing to show Coote giving his personal opinion on Liverpool and Klopp, its long-time former manager, when asked by an unidentified man. Coote uses an expletive for Liverpool and a derogatory term for Klopp, saying he disliked the German manager because he was 'arrogant' and 'accused me of lying' after one game. The FA charge including an allegation that Coote's actions constituted an 'aggravated breach' of rules because they 'included a reference — whether express or implied — to nationality.' An independent regulatory commission announced on Tuesday it had imposed the new sanctions on Coote following a hearing. Coote was initially suspended for his conduct and then fired in December because his position was deemed 'untenable' by English soccer's referees body following an investigation into his conduct. Coote was also investigated by the FA following allegations in British newspaper The Sun that he discussed with a fan the possibility of giving a yellow card to a player in a match. The former referee denied any wrongdoing and the FA said in June that no charges were issued in relation to that investigation. Separately, UEFA launched an investigation into Coote following a video, again published by The Sun, allegedly showing him using cocaine during the European Championship this year. ___
