Conwy Business Key Fund Offers Support of Up to £50,000
The £1 million fund aims to help local businesses deliver innovative, growth-focused projects that support sustainability and economic resilience in the county.
Funded by the UK Government's Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), the scheme is being delivered through Conwy County Borough Council's Business Support team. The targeted support builds on the success of the previous Local Business Key Fund programme and focuses on enabling enterprises to overcome barriers to growth, whether through capital investment, skills development, or initiatives that promote economic impact and sustainability.
One of the businesses that benefited from the fund last year is the Wild Horse Brewing Company in Llandudno. Founded in 2015 by Dave and Emma Faragher, the company is an independent brewery, specialising in craft ales and lagers. With all production done onsite, they supply over 150 pubs, restaurants, and retailers across Wales and beyond.
David said:
'With support from the Supporting Local Business Key Fund, we installed a new solar energy system which now supplies over half the brewery's electricity needs. The investment is already cutting energy costs, has boosted our efficiency, and enabled us to reinvest in growth, sustainability, and local jobs here in Conwy.'
Another local business that received support during the initial round is Blas ar Fwyd, a family Welsh food business that has been part of the Llanrwst high street for nearly 40 years.
Nia Deiniol of the company said:
'The fund allowed us to re-open the café in Llanrwst following closure due to Covid, purchase new kitchen equipment as well as install green energy technology. Without this support we wouldn't have been able to invest in reducing our carbon footprint which has helped reduce our energy costs and secure much needed local jobs here in rural Conwy.'
Councillor Nigel Smith, Cabinet Member for a Sustainable Economy, added:
'This is an exciting opportunity for businesses across Conwy to access significant funding that supports both economic development and growth and sustainability. Whether they have plans in place to expand operations or need support to give the business a boost, the Conwy Supporting Local Business Key Fund can help make it happen and by doing so contribute to the county's long-term community and economic development.'

Council approve plans for new 'net zero' primary school in Port Talbot
Council approve plans for new 'net zero' primary school in Port Talbot It is part of a Welsh Government programme to support the creation of schools that are environmentally sustainable How the new Rhosafan primary school could look once completed (Image: Neath Port Talbot Council) Plans to build a new 'net zero' school to replace the current Rhosafan Primary School in Sandfields, Port Talbot have been given the go-ahead by the local authority. The proposal which was first put forward in March of 2025, will now see the demolition of the existing Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Rhosafan and Tir Morfa Centre to make way for a new school and sports pitch, along with play facilities and associated works. The project was given the green light by council bosses at a planning committee on August 5, where members were told about the new facility that will eventually accommodate a total of 511 pupils, with nursery and childcare spaces as well as an Additional Learning Needs (ALN) Unit. The school will also contain a Welsh immersion unit once completed with what is described as a 'Winter Garden' to provide an adaptable learning space for pupils. The Tir Morfa training centre which provides local adult education services, will also be incorporated into the new development. Additionally, the new facility will provide 107 car parking spaces, along with 3 minibus spaces and 14 EV charging spaces and cycle parking. The report read: 'The proposed primary school would be constructed while the existing school and community facilities remain operational, with partial demolition to some buildings to facilitate the development. 'Once the new replacement school has been completed the existing school and associated buildings would then be fully demolished.' Rhosafan Primary School is located off Marine Drive in the Sandfields area of Port Talbot, approximately 500 metres north of the popular Aberavon Beach within a residential area. The development is part of the Welsh Government Sustainable Schools Challenge Programme which supports the creation of schools that are environmentally sustainable and involve local communities. It is one of only three sites chosen in Wales with the project expected to serve as a blueprint for school design and delivery in the future. Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Suzanne Paddison of Sandfields West said: 'It's something that is really needed in the area and I think all residents of the ward and further afield are very happy that we're going to have this Welsh medium primary school in Sandfields.' Cllr Nia Jenkins, Neath Port Talbot Council's cabinet member for education early years, added: 'This marks a major milestone in the Council's Strategic Schools Improvement Programme, which is focused on ensuring all pupils have access to high-quality education in modern, fit-for-purpose facilities.' The restaurant, which had branches in Exeter, Taunton and Cardiff, entered liquidation, having to close its doors and leave some staff unpaid. It describes itself as a "multi-award winning burger joint", and even bagged the Street Food Dish of the Year award in 2023. Two more branches launched in 2022, first in Exeter and then in Cardiff. The company, however, failed to pay its meat supplier, Fairfax Meadow Europe Ltd, and closed down completely on July 22. Under the ownership of Daniel Aldridge, Eat the Bird must pay Fairfax Meadow from its assets in accordance with a court order mandate. Mr Aldridge confirmed that several staff members are also yet to recieve their wages after the sudden closure. He told Somerset Country Gazette these staff will be paid. "I am working closely with one of the directors, and we are working hard to get the situation sorted," Mr Aldridge said. The company's struggles and subsequent closure have been attributed to both escalating costs and the aftermath of Covid-19. The businessman added: "We were weighed down by the hidden nasties post-COVID. "We have so many empty shops in Taunton, we need them filled. Pub chain collapses into administration as SIX sites shut their doors for good and 159 job losses "It takes people like me to get them sorted, it's no good commenting on a shop's closure via Facebook." People nevertheless took to Facebook to express their shock at the news that the much-loved restaurant had closed. One Taunton resident posted after learning about the closure: "That is very sad. "Great staff, great food. "I am very disappointed. "Best wishes to all of the employees who have looked after us so well over the last few years." Another added: "One of my favourite places to eat in Taunton. "Very sad." A third chimed in: "Gutting! "I love that place." Eat the Bird's shutting down comes just a week after a popular online food critic praised the branch in Exeter. Danny from Rate My Takeaway's YouTube channel sampled the restaurant's Dirty Donald and My Big Fat Greek in a clip that has raked up more than 95,000 views. He described the food as "absolutely fantastic".
