SiriusXM Canada is Back for All 2025 CFL Games and New Exclusive Content
TORONTO, June 5, 2025 /CNW/ - SiriusXM Canada is proud to partner with The Canadian Football League (CFL) to deliver full coverage of the 2025 season to fans and subscribers on the country's leading audio entertainment platform. All 81 regular season games, four Grey Cup Playoff matchups, and the 112 th Grey Cup, live from Winnipeg on Sunday, November 16, will be available to listeners across North America.

The Ottawa REDBLACKs will head west to Mosaic Stadium to face the Saskatchewan Roughriders on June 5 to officially open the 2025 season. The Montréal Alouettes will host the defending champion Toronto Argonauts on Friday Night Football on June 6. A Saturday doubleheader will see the Calgary Stampeders play host to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, before the BC Lions take on the Edmonton Elks to close out Week 1.

Elks aim to 'validate' their work vs. Argonauts
(Photo credit: Anne-Marie Sorvin-Imagn Images) Cody Fajardo aims to continue his strong play on Friday as the Edmonton Elks host the Toronto Argonauts in a battle of cellar-dwelling teams in their respective divisions. Fajardo has fared well since taking over for Tre Ford under center, throwing for 892 yards and five touchdowns over the last three games. The two-time Grey Cup champion threw for 289 yards and two scores to lead the Elks (2-6) to a 23-22 victory over the Montreal Alouettes last Friday. Fajardo found fellow former Alouette Kaion Julien-Grant for a 15-yard touchdown with 15 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. The late scoring strike enabled Edmonton to notch its first win since a 39-33 victory over the Ottawa Redblacks on July 6. 'You can't rest on your laurels, right?' Fajardo said. 'Just because we win a football game, 'OK, everything's figured out.' 'Like I said, you validate the work. But that doesn't mean that I'm not going to do the extra stuff, I'm not going to do what I need to do to get that win.' The Elks will now set their sights on a Toronto defense that yielded 429 yards of offense to Ottawa in a 46-42 setback to the Redblacks on Saturday. The defending Grey Cup champion Argonauts (2-7) saw their 21-point lead in the first quarter go by the boards, much to the chagrin of head coach Ryan Dinwiddie. 'I sound like a broken record talking to them after the game,' Dinwiddie said. 'I just told them I'm not going to quit on them and I don't think those guys quit on us, but I think we have some pretenders in the building who like to talk a big game and don't show up on game day. 'If you don't love it, let me know. I know I love it and I'm not going to quit.' Nick Arbuckle completed 32 of 38 passes for 317 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for another score. Arbuckle, who is second in the CFL in passing yards (2,651) and passing touchdowns (16), will now take aim at an Edmonton defense that has allowed at least 28 points on six occasions this season.

When brands get big: Thomas Müller more than a playing addition for Whitecaps
It's as we entered the German-language part of the Thomas Müller press conference Thursday that it hit me: this is clearly a big on-field deal for the Vancouver Whitecaps, but it's also a big massive international marketing deal, too. As a player, Müller is as big a deal as any signing by any team in this city, ever. The Whitecaps put on a big show for the media and their key sponsor, Telus, hosted the German international's media debut at the Telus Garden building downtown. The room was packed and not just by happy smiling faces from the club and the sponsor, which is always the case at these kinds of pressers, but also with a swath of local and German journalists. Rarely has Vancouver seen a player reveal like this. The Canucks haven't had one like this in years; the buzz around Mats Sundin's arrival in 2009 was perhaps the last time there was this much broad interest in a stand-alone signing. The Whitecaps are certainly leading the local discussion for the moment. But it's those questions in German that are key. Fifteen years ago, then-CEO Paul Barber talked about wanting to make the Whitecaps into one of the world's top 25 clubs. It was a statement about mentality, not so much literal rankings. Think one of the best in the world, no matter your size. In a German media interview, Axel Schuster last week compared his club status within MLS to that of Freiburg in the Bundesliga, a club that's not high in the financial table but high in the on-field success rankings. A team that punches above its weight. Freiburg may not have a long record of high-profile success, but it draws from a big metro region, similar to Vancouver's, and after a period of smart, high-impact decisions, now finds itself as one of the more prominent clubs in Germany. That's the forward-looking mentality he's looked to instil in the organization that he's led now for almost six years. That effort to push the organization in how it sees itself and presents itself — somewhat in line with Barber's original goal, —seems to be bearing fruit. Müller, of course, brings a ton to the field. And that was the main purpose of this signing, no doubt of that. Under Schuster and head coach Jesper Sorensen, the Caps have built one of Major League Soccer's most energetic and entertaining teams. But they still needed another player or two to buttress their efforts to win it all. Müller should raise their game even more, even if it takes some time for him to adjust to how his team plays ,as well as how the game is played around him. He noted that at one point in answer to a question from a German reporter. His whole career to this point has been in familiar circumstances: he's known not just his teammates inside and out, he's knows the tendencies of all his opponents and all the opposing teams. It's now a blank slate here for him. Since he agreed terms with the 'Caps two weeks ago, he's been on a crash course learning about how his teammates play, how the upcoming opposition play, how he can best deploy his Raumdeuter instincts in his new environment. On the business end of things, the Whitecaps find themselves in new territory. It helps that Muller appears to be a bit of a unicorn: a pro athlete who is very self-aware, who isn't shy about showing his personality, about showing how he really is. He loves football. But he also loves to ham it up for the camera. He loves golf. He loves horses. His social media presence is among the world's best. He has his own website, his own fan-focused email newsletter. He has the natural instincts of a salesman. The Whitecaps have lucked out in this regard. They suddenly are a name that fans in Germany will know. They are now the club that a national legend plays for. A guy who is going to put their image everywhere. In the minds of many German fans, Müller hasn't just gone to Canada. He's gone to the Whitecaps. Schuster said during the press conference that jersey sales have surged. No doubt a portion of that is from new German fans. But another twist here, one that is perhaps unexpected: Müller's fandom is in China, too. According to Müller's agency, by social media metrics, he's the No. 3 player in China, behind Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. That's a massive deal. The Whitecaps are also going to have visibility in the biggest market there is. Change comes slowly, then quickly, it's said. The Whitecaps are about the enter the quick part. They can build quite the future for themselves if they keep hitting their marks. pjohnston@

Caleb Evans looks to seize opportunity as Alouettes search for solutions at QB
MONTREAL – Caleb Evans never stopped believing he might get another chance, even after the back-to-back setbacks he suffered 12 months ago. First, he lost his job as the Montreal Alouettes' primary backup to Davis Alexander, failing to seize his opportunity while starting quarterback Cody Fajardo missed time. A week later, Evans sustained a season-ending knee injury while subbing in for Alexander against Hamilton on Aug. 2, 2024. But that wasn't the end of his time in Montreal. The 27-year-old American returned on a one-year contract — and now he'll make his first CFL start since July 25, 2024, when the Alouettes (5-4) visit the B.C. Lions on Saturday. 'You never know, injuries happen,' Evans said after taking first-team reps Thursday at Stade Hébert. 'You just always got to be ready. 'It was just hard work to get back here, and I'm thankful for it.' Evans, Montreal's third-string and short-yardage QB this season, replaced a subpar McLeod Bethel-Thompson and threw for 113 yards and one touchdown on 14-of-18 passing in the second half of last week's 23-22 loss to the Edmonton Elks. Bethel-Thompson joined Alexander — now the franchise QB — on the six-game injured list with a right elbow injury Wednesday, meaning Evans could get some runway in the starting role. 'He's been tremendous about handling adversity, really throughout his career,' head coach Jason Maas said. 'He's just an unselfish person and very committed to the game. I'm very excited for him and the opportunity that lies ahead of him.' Evans, who has a knack for running the ball but has struggled with pass efficiency, will make his fourth start for the Alouettes and 17th in the CFL after a previous stint with the Ottawa Redblacks. This time around, he's coming in with a new perspective. 'More comfortable, calm,' he said. 'After you go through the highs and lows, there's not much more to go through … can't get no lower, so you just got to go out there, sling, go out and have fun.' 'There's gonna always be naysayers and doubters,' he added. 'This process has taught me a lot about myself, how hard I want to work mentally and physically, so it's just more to prove myself right.' The task ahead, however, will be anything but easy. The Lions (4-5) are coming off a big win over the East Division-leading Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and the Alouettes — losers of two in a row — have only practised once with Evans as the starter. Injury-plagued Montreal, which is also missing top receivers Austin Mack and Tyson Philpot, began the week with team meetings on Monday and Tuesday before cancelling Wednesday's practice due to inclement weather. Maas points out the Alouettes have won with backups in recent years — Evans himself won two games while replacing Fajardo in 2023 — but this season, they have a 1-4 record without Alexander. The offence has often stagnated. Through Week 10, Montreal ranks last in the CFL in offensive TDs, and second-last in offensive points, net offence and pass efficiency. Its TD drive percentage is also a league-low 13.6. Maas said Alexander, who is one win shy of a record-setting 9-0 start to a CFL career, is 'progressing,' but a timeline for his return remains unclear. 'It's far enough away where we can't exactly pinpoint a date that he's going to come back,' Maas said. The Alouettes are not the only team that's shuffled quarterbacks this season. Only Toronto's Nick Arbuckle and Hamilton's Bo Levi Mitchell have started all of their teams' games. Montreal will join Ottawa (Dru Brown, Dustin Crum, Matt Shiltz) as the only teams to start three QBs this season. 'This is part of the Canadian Football League and you need depth at that position,' said former Alouettes QB and current offensive coordinator Anthony Calvillo. 'You need the other guys to make sure they're going to give you a chance to win out there, and we feel very confident in the guys that we have.' Beyond Evans, James Morgan is waiting in the wings for his first CFL chance. The Alouettes also signed former Toronto Argonauts QB Cameron Dukes on Wednesday. Dukes filled in for suspended starter Chad Kelly in Toronto last season before he was cut from training camp this year. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Since then, the 27-year-old American has been in Florida, where he trains aspiring quarterbacks. Dukes was working out at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday when Alouettes general manager Danny Maciocia rang him up. 'He's like, 'Hey, you can get a flight up here today?'' Dukes recalled. 'Went straight home, started packing, got a flight at 4 o'clock, and I was up here at 1 a.m.' He calls it a 'full-circle moment' after working out for Maciocia in Vegas before signing with Toronto in 2023.
