Breanna Stewart leads Liberty to 98-77 win over the Fever as Caitlin Clark missed game with groin injury
Clark missed the game after injuring her right groin on Tuesday night in the final minute of the game against Connecticut in Boston. Clark has a busy weekend ahead as Indiana is hosting the WNBA All-Star Game and she's slated to compete in the 3-point contest and is captain of one of the two teams.
Sabrina Ionescu, who will also be in the 3-point contest, added 15 points and nine assists for the Liberty (15-6).
Stewart got the Liberty off to a strong start as they led 32-24 after one quarter and were up 15 at the half. The Liberty's All-Star forward had 13 points, nine rebounds and five assists by the break.
New York put the game away in the third quarter behind Stewart, whose three-point play with 3:57 left made it 71-48 much to the delight of the crowd of 17,371. The Fever could only get within 15 the rest of the way.
Kelsey Mitchell led Indiana (12-11) with 16 points. The Fever fell to 4-6 when Clark has missed a regular season game this season.
New York was still missing star center Jonquel Jones. She said she plans to be back for the Liberty's first game after the All-Star break on Tuesday which is also against Indiana. She's been sidelined with a sprained ankle for about a month.

YouTube Star IShowSpeed to Rep MLS in All-Star Skills Challenge

MLS announced on Thursday that YouTube star and media personality IShowSpeed will participate in the All-Star Skills Challenge, which is on Tuesday, July 22 at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas. IShowSpeed, whose official name is Darren Watkins Jr., rose to fame as a teenager, primarily producing soccer-related content and live-streaming. Watkins, 20, has 42.5 million YouTube subscribers. IShowSpeed won the Streamer of the Year and Best International Streamer awards at the 2024 Streamer Awards. As for the All-Star Game (Wednesday, July 23), Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano provided an honest answer on whether he wants his stars, Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba, to compete in the spectacle. "The players are called up, I would like them to be able to rest, but that is not my decision," Mascherano said on Friday, according to ESPN. "I know how important the All Star [Game] is, and as far as I know there is no decision from the club, everything is as normal." WNBA fashion, growth on display at The Collective's All-Star party with USA TODAY Studio IX
INDIANAPOLIS — WNBA All-Star weekend has been a vibe. Fans have converged on the hoops capital of the United States and immersed themselves in the W and it's growing popularity. "It's so cool," Fever guard Lexie Hull, who participated in the 3-point contest on Friday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, told USA TODAY Studio IX. "I know our team, our front office, everyone with the Fever, has been working really hard to put together a really awesome weekend. "And to have a lot of the W players and the fans filling the stadium, every restaurant and every hotel, it's awesome." Many of those players, along with team owners, general managers and other sports business VIPs celebrated all things WNBA, fashion and the culture of women's sports Friday night at an All-Star party hosted by Wasserman's The Collective in partnership with Ally Financial and USA TODAY Studio IX. Hull walked the red carpet into The Bemberg, a members-only club where the event was held, along with the New York Liberty's Breanna Stewart, Paige Bueckers of the Dallas Wings — dressed head to toe in Coach — and the Seattle Storm's Gabby Williams. Notre Dame phenom Hannah Hidalgo and Olympic volleyball medalist Jordan Thompson also attended. Thompson said it is "amazing" to watch the growth of women's sports. She hopes that volleyball can capitalize. "Especially in the WNBA, it's just starting to skyrocket," said Thompson, who will begin play in the Athletes Unlimited Pro Volleyball Championship this fall. "It's kind of exciting, because, as a volleyball player, it's a vision of where we could be one day, and hopefully sooner rather than later." The growth in women's sports has happened for many reasons including the talent, personality and style of the women playing. But they have experienced significant buy-in from companies who understand the power of collaboration with leagues like the WNBA and NWSL. Ally Bank was an early sponsor of women's sports, helping get the NWSL championship moved to primetime on CBS. "For us, it made a lot of sense to enter the women's (sports) space in a big way," Stephanie Marciano, Ally's head of sports and entertainment marketing, said. "We felt there was a lot of impact we could make, specifically on the media side. Because there's a number of data metrics that prove that there was a huge visibility and coverage gap in women's sports." Ally divides it's advertising dollars 50/50 between men's and women's sports media. Wasserman believes it's a blueprint many other companies will follow as the popularity of women's leagues continues to grow and sports like women's volleyball and soccer take off. Another one starting to make some noise? Girls flag football, which is being added as a sport in high schools across the county."When you see billionaires coming in, multiples of them, to invest in teams, not only in the W, but across other women's sports," Thayer Lavielle, The Collective's managing director said, "they have had proven success at making a lot of money. People are seeing the return in the value." Lavielle said the women's sports space is a community where people work collaboratively, which is unique. Her advice to brands that want to support "this rocket ship" is simple. "Come in, the water's warm. Do it. Invest now," Lavielle said "Everything will continue to go up."

Tarik Skubal to Dodgers? Will Smith wants 'all the best names'
ATLANTA — Two starting pitchers and two managers stood on the stage for a group photo on the eve of the 2025 MLB All-Star Game: Detroit Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Paul Skenes. After the photo, Skubal and Roberts embraced before walking off the stage alongside Skenes and Boone. Skubal is set to become a free agent after the 2026 season. Could the Dodgers be Skubal's new team in 2027? Skubal has praised the Dodgers before, when he was asked about the free-agent market in February 2025: "You see with the Dodgers, right? A lot of guys want to go play there because they have a great organization, and they know they're going to win, and they're going to have a ton of success, and they're paid pretty well to go there and play. Those are big goals as a player. You want to win, and then you want to get paid for your services. That's the goal in baseball." At $321 million, the Dodgers had the second-highest payroll on 2025 Opening Day among the 30 MLB teams, trailing only the New York Mets. The Tigers ranked 17th in MLB at $143 million. Additionally, the Dodgers have their spring training complex in Phoenix, where Skubal and his family call home in the offseason. Dodgers catcher Will Smith is signed through the 2033 season. He wants to work with Skubal. "As the catcher, you want to catch all the best names," Smith said Monday, July 14, one day before the All-Star Game. "As the Dodgers, we want to win the World Series, and that means getting the best players each and every year." Skubal — the reigning American League Cy Young winner represented by agent Scott Boras — is a candidate to become the first pitcher in MLB history to receive a $400 million contract, as long as he stays healthy and maintains elite performance. He previously rejected a short-term contract extension from the Tigers. Skubal owns a 2.43 ERA across nearly 400 innings since July 4, 2023, ranking No. 1 among qualified MLB pitchers during that stretch. The 28-year-old registered a 2.80 ERA in 15 starts in 2023 and a 2.39 ERA in 31 starts in 2024, followed by a 2.23 ERA with 16 walks and 153 strikeouts over 121 innings in 19 starts in 2025. Looking ahead, Skubal is trending toward surpassing the pitching contract record set by Yoshinobu Yamamoto when he signed with the Dodgers for $325 million in December 2023 — just $1 million more than Gerrit Cole, who signed with the Yankees for $324 million in December 2019. "After 2026, I don't know what we're going to do," said Smith, an All-Star in three consecutive seasons as part of his seven-year MLB career. "That's up to the front office. But it's going to be a high price tag for him." There are reasons to believe the Dodgers, Mets, Yankees, Los Angeles Angels, Toronto Blue Jays, San Diego Padres and Boston Red Sox, among others, will pursue Skubal when he enters free agency in early November 2026, with team owners getting involved if there's a bidding war. In the 2024-25 offseason, a pair of left-handed pitchers set the market for Skubal's future contract: Max Fried signed for eight years, $218 million with the Yankees, the largest total value for a lefty pitcher; Blake Snell signed for five years, $182 million with the Dodgers, the largest average annual value for a southpaw. Skubal will almost certainly shatter those records in the 2026-27 offseason, possibly by signing a 10-year, $400 million contract. Fried offered advice to Skubal about free agency. "I guess I would say just keep your head down," Fried said Monday at the All-Star Game festivities. "You got to stay in the moment. Looking too far ahead is not something that I really like to do. It will all work out in the end if you just keep your head down and be the pitcher that you are.
