Tragic Brit tourist Greg Monks fell to his death in an Algarve ravine 'after jumping over a garden wall and not realising it had a steep drop on the other side'
Today it emerged CCTV footage showing the 38-year-old jumping over a wall after a night out with his stag-do friends had enabled police to narrow down his last movements and make the grim find.
Cops with sniffer dogs were dispatched to search the steep hillside below luxury villas in Cerro da Aguia near the party resort of Albufeira after a homeowner responded to an appeal by police and Greg's family to search cameras for images of him.
Tributes were continuing to be paid today to the plant mechanic from Glasgow, described as an 'amazing guy' by his devastated sister Jillian following yesterday morning's discovery.
Portuguese police confirmed Greg's body had been found in an official statement they put out yesterday afternoon after news of the find started leaking out in local press.
An autopsy today is expected to firm up the belief he died in a tragic accident after becoming disorientated as he tried to get back to his hotel after a heavy night of drinking with his holiday friends just hours after travelling to Albufeira for a five-day stag do.
A Portuguese police source revealed today CCTV supplied by a local homeowner had proved vital in the case.
Greg's sister had urged residents in Cerro da Aguia west of Albufeira to check home cameras and doorbell footage between 2am and 5am on May 28 after it emerged the last sighting of him had been in the hill area dotted with large villas.
The police insider said today: 'The GNR police force had requested help from the Polícia Judiciaria force which confirmed yesterday the missing man's body had been found.
'They then got given CCTV from one of the villas in the Cerro da Aguia areas which enabled them to trace him jumping over a wall of a neighbouring property.
'With that information the searches were immediately moved to the scrubland below the houses.
'Sniffer dogs that were being used by the GNR were brought in again.
'When the dogs were put to work in the area, around 11am, they went straight to a bush where the missing man's body was laying.'
Another police insider added: 'The investigation into exactly how he died is ongoing.
'But all the evidence so far is pointing to the tourist losing all notion of where he was in a place he hadn't been to before, and under the effects of alcohol jumping over a first wall into a private property and then a second wall in the back garden not realising there was a steep drop the other side.'
Greg's girlfriend Nicole Kelso as well as the Scot's mum and dad travelled to Albufeira after he went missing.
A police insider said that Mr Monks might not have realised there was a steep drop on the other side of the wall he had been climbing after he was disorientated from being drunk
His sister Jillian, who fronted the appeals for information on his whereabouts before he was found dead, said yesterday his family were 'truly heartbroken.'
She added: 'Everyone who knows Greg knows how much he will be missed and what an amazing guy he was.'
Portuguese police have not yet released any official statement about why they think he died, although officers have admitted privately they don't expect the post-mortem to reveal any possible link to a crime.

Man 'is smothered to death after "obese" wife trips, falls onto him and can't get back up'
A man in Portugal has been 'smothered to death' after his reportedly obese wife tripped, fell onto him, and couldn't get back up. The unnamed victim, 59, who has been described in local media as being slight in build, died in his home in the residential district of Campanha on the outskirts of Porto. His wife, who was a year older and weighed more than 100kg, is said to have stumbled as she got out of bed to go over to her partner who was lying on the floor beside her. Neighbours alerted by the woman's screams after she became trapped between the bed and the wall of the couple's home are said to have raced to their aid in the early hours of Monday morning. They managed to lift her off him but he was already unconscious by the time firefighters and paramedics arrived. Tragically, the efforts of medical responders to revive him after he went into cardiac arrest proved unsuccessful. The woman's weight reportedly played a key factor in her inability to get up after she became trapped. It is not clear how much she weighs but she has been described locally as 'obese.' Portuguese daily Correio da Manha said five men had to lift her off her partner. PSP police officers have investigated but have ruled out foul play and decided it was a freak accident. One source close to the investigation said: 'It's been categorised as an accidental asphyxia. 'It's obviously a very unusual death but there was no criminal intent. 'It was a stumble by the woman as she got out of bed and tried to move closer to her husband who was lying on the floor that led to what happened.' The unnamed dead man's partner is understood to have been offered grief counselling. The couple had lived together as man and wife, although they weren't formally married, for several years according to reports in Portugal.

United Airlines flight canceled after female passenger had 'biohazard' diarrhea that destroyed bathroom
A woman has freely admitted that she caused a United Airlines flight to be canceled after spending an hour and a half destroying the plane's tiny bathroom with her diarrhea and vomit. Meghan Reinertsen, a writer and actor, said the nightmare journey happened about a year ago when she was coming home from Portugal. The first symptoms of what she would later find out was food poisoning struck her at Newark Liberty International Airport just moments before she was supposed to board her connecting flight back to Indianapolis. 'Something is brewing. Something is happening that I am not prepared to deal with,' she said in a TikTok video that has gotten nearly 20 million views. Despite her reservations, she boarded the plane and 'hoped for the best'. She spent the next 30 minutes in her window seat crying, sweating profusely and writhing in abject pain. The plane eventually took off. For much of that time, she was only staying seated because the seatbelt sign was on, but at some point, she remembered the story of the woman on a Delta plane who pooped her pants in her seat mid-flight. 'I couldn't let that happen to me,' she said. 'I make it to the bathroom, and for the next 20 minutes I have more diarrhea than any human should ever have in their life.' While she was in the bathroom, she began feeling the urge to throw up as well. She said she panicked in the tiny, claustrophobic area before she had the presence of mind to scream for help from the flight attendants, who gave her bags. The flight crew allowed her to stay in the bathroom for the entire flight. They even got special clearance from the pilot to allow her to remain where she was for landing. Reinertsen said she couldn't make it back to her seat in her condition, which prompted the flight attendant to tell her through the door to 'brace for impact'. Once they were on the ground, she was told that the next flight with that plane had been canceled. 'A flight attendant comes over and says, "Everybody's off the plane now, go ahead and take your time and come out when you can, the next flight has been cancelled,"' Reinertsen said. 'In the moment, I'm not thinking it is because of me.' The flight attendant then told her that a hazmat team would be coming to clean up her mess. 'Got it, so you canceled that flight because of you don't know if I brought something back from Portugal. And I am a biohazard. I am patient zero,' she said. She even had to be put in a wheelchair when she was ready to disembark because she couldn't walk. 'They had to wheel me off this plane. I can't walk. They gotta get me in a wheelchair,' she said. They wheeled her to baggage claim where she had to endure the shocked stares of all her fellow passengers who undoubtedly knew she was the woman in the bathroom for the entire flight. Reinertsen said her devastating illness, which persisted days after the horrific flight, came as a result of eating an undercooked hamburger the night before her flight. United Airlines confirmed to Metro that this incident happened in July 2024. 'This incident occurred in July 2024. Our flight crew is trained to assist customers in situations like this and helped as much as they could during the flight and upon arrival in Indianapolis,' a spokesperson for the airline said in a statement.
