Ex-IND star sheds light on rumours of Jasprit Bumrah missing 4th Test; urges Gill, Gambhir to reconsider plan

Hindustan Times3 days ago
Former India cricketer Deep Dasgupta weighed in on the speculation surrounding Team India's possible decision to rest Jasprit Bumrah for the fourth Test. Before the start of the series, India's head coach Gautam Gambhir already announced that Bumrah would play only three Tests in the series, and he has already played two out of the first three. The precaution around Bumrah's usage stems from a stress reaction in the back during the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney in January. There is uncertainty over Bumrah's availability for the fourth Test, with Dasgupta shedding light on rumours of India's original plan of resting him in Manchester and playing him in the last match.
"Jasprit Bumrah in the fourth Test, absolutely yes. I've heard rumours that the plan for him was to play in the first, third and fifth Tests. But now, when India are 1-2 behind, the fourth Test becomes very, very crucial," Dasgupta said on JioHotstar.
Bumrah has picked up five-wicket hauls in both Tests he's featured in this series, and his very presence puts immediate pressure on an aggressive side like England, who prefer to dominate with the bat.
Dasgupta asserted that there is enough gap between the last two Tests, and at the moment, the Manchester clash is more relevant, with India trailing 1-2 and needing the number 1-ranked bowlers to level the series.
"You would definitely want the world's best bowler to play. There is an eight-day gap between the two Tests. It remains to be seen whether the fifth Test is still relevant after the fourth Test, but the relevance of the fourth Test is considerable," he added.
Uncertainty over Rishabh Pant's place too
Apart from Bumrah, Rishabh Pant's availability is also uncertain after sustaining an injury at Lord's. He made a dive to pick up the ball but could not get it cleanly in his hands.
After sustaining a finger injury, Rishabh Pant was in visible discomfort and had to leave the field for medical attention. Dhruv Jurel stepped in as wicketkeeper during the second session on Day 1. However, Pant showed immense grit, returning to bat in both innings. In the first, he scored a superb 74 off 112 balls, including two towering sixes that saw him surpass Sir Vivian Richards' record for the most sixes against England in Test cricket

Transfer News: Luton Town Sign Tottenham Hotspur's Young Star Goalkeeper

Last Updated: Luton Town has signed Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Josh Keeley after the 22-year-old impressed on loan at Leyton Orient last season. League One team Luton Town has announced the signing of highly regarded Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Josh Keeley. The 22-year-old has signed a permanent contract following an impressive season on loan at Leyton Orient in League One last term. The Republic of Ireland international goalkeeper joined Spurs' Academy from St Patrick's Athletic in July 2022 and immediately joined the first team's pre-season tour of South Korea. He did the same in the summer of 2023 as Spurs travelled to Australia, Thailand, and Singapore. Keeley was a regular for the Under-21s in his first two seasons before joining National League side Barnet on loan in January 2024. In his first interview with Luton Town, Josh revealed that a former Town goalkeeper helped persuade him to join the Hatters. He said, 'Dean Brill was my goalkeeper coach at Spurs, and he told me how big and how great the club was. To be honest, those words helped turn my head completely, so I'm absolutely delighted and grateful that I'm here." He continued, 'I moved to Spurs when I was 19, but there comes a time in your career that it's time to move on – and that time is now, so it's time to kick on and I can't wait to get started." Who Is Josh Keeley? Last season was quite remarkable for Josh. He joined Leyton Orient on loan in August 2024 and played 36 times for the O's, keeping 16 clean sheets, including a run of 660 minutes without conceding a goal in December. He made national headlines by scoring a late equaliser in the FA Cup second round against Oldham and produced more heroics in a penalty shoot-out win against Derby in the third round to set up a fourth-round tie against Manchester City. Orient went on to make the League One play-off final where Josh started in a 1-0 loss against Charlton at Wembley. His performances were recognised with three accolades at Orient's end-of-season awards, including Goal of the Season, an exceptional achievement. Capped at Under-17, Under-19, and Under-21 levels, Josh earned his first senior call-up for the Republic of Ireland for this summer's friendlies against Senegal and Luxembourg. FC Barcelona reportedly agree to sign Marcus Rashford on loan from Manchester United

Manchester United's English striker #10 Marcus Rashford shoots to score the opening goal of the English Premier League football match between Manchester United and Everton at Old Trafford in Manchester, north west England, on December 1, 2024. AFP Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford is reportedly set to join FC Barcelona on a loan deal with an option to buy. A verbal agreement has been reached between the player and the club. Subsequently, the La Liga side is expected to conduct Rashford's medical soon. Further details of the deal are yet to come out. The report on the development has come after a long period of uncertainty. Rashford, who rose through the ranks in United's academy and made it to the Premier League in 2015, remained a starter for the club till late 2024. However, he lost the confidence of the new manager, Rubin Amorim, at the club, and hence his stature in the team dwindled. After hardly getting any play time under Amorim, Rashford was sent to Aston Villa on loan in February. He made 10 appearances in the league for Villa and had five goal contributions. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD After his brief loan spell with Villa ended, United began to seek new takers for Rashford and talks with FC Barcelona for a potential loan move made waves. Thus, after a considerable time the done is set to take place. It will be the 3rd signing of Barcelona this summer. The club added Joan Garcia to the squad earlier and also brought Roony Bardghji from Copenhagen.
