Sand lorry driver arrested after crash that killed 9 FRU personnel
TELUK INTAN: Police have arrested the driver of a sand-laden lorry involved in a fatal head-on collision that claimed the lives of nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel early this morning.
Hilir Perak police chief Assistant Commissioner Dr Bakri Zainal Abidin said that the man, in his 40s, was arrested earlier today.
"We can confirm that eight FRU personnel died at the scene, while a ninth succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment in the hospital's red zone. Two others remain in critical condition, and a further seven are being treated for moderate injuries," he told reporters at the Forensic Unit of Teluk Intan Hospital.
He added that a urine test conducted on the lorry driver returned negative.
The case is being investigated under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
According to Bakri, the tragic collision occurred at Km15 of Jalan Sungai Manik–Sungai Lampam, involving a convoy of FRU Unit 5 personnel returning from a security assignment, and a lorry carrying sand.
"They were en route back to their base in Sungai Senam, Ipoh, after completing duties in conjunction with the Chitra Pournami Festival in Teluk Intan.
"Post-mortem examinations are being carried out at Teluk Intan Hospital, and arrangements are being made to return the remains to Unit 5 in Sungai Senam for final respects.
"The deceased include both Muslim and non-Muslim personnel, and appropriate funeral rites are being arranged accordingly," he said.

MOT to develop database system for express, tour bus drivers
KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Transport (MOT) will develop a database system for express and tour bus drivers, complete with their previous records, to improve the safety of public land transportation. Its Minister, Anthony Loke, said the system, to be developed by the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD), would enable bus companies to assess the eligibility and background of drivers before hiring them. 'Currently, in our system, we do not have a database that covers all drivers. We only have their licensing (details) but whether or not they have any previous records, the companies that hire them have no references. 'In the system, perhaps a driver who did not carry out his responsibilities properly and was sacked from company A, he may go to company B... so, drivers lacking in integrity are still on the market,' he said. He said this at today's joint media conference with Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi on the fatal crash involving Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students on Monday (June 16). In the incident, 15 UPSI students were killed when the chartered bus carrying them from Jertih to the main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, overturned after it collided with a Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle along the East-West Highway, while 33 others were injured, including the bus driver and his assistant, as well as the driver and three passengers of the Perodua Alza car. Meanwhile, Loke said the preliminary report on the May 13 fatal crash involving Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel in Perak last month would be uploaded to the MOT's website tomorrow. He added that the report would also contain several findings from the relevant technical agencies, including the Road Transport Department and the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom). 'The reason this report is being made public is to allow the people to understand the case facts and space for researchers, especially road safety experts like mechanical experts, to see all the facts about the accident and be able to conduct studies and research,' he said. In the May 13 incident, nine FRU personnel from Unit 5, based in Sungai Senam, Ipoh died in the crash on Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampam at 8.50 am when a lorry collided with a truck carrying 18 FRU personnel, who were returning from an assignment in Teluk Intan.

Bus operator's permit revoked over Gerik crash, no appeal allowed, says Loke
KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 — The operating permit of a bus company involved in a fatal crash in Gerik, Perak, has been revoked with immediate effect, Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced today, according to The Vibes. Loke said the company owner committed two significant violations: leasing the operating permit to a third party and failing to activate the bus's GPS. 'The owner leased it to a third party. The owner has an address in Kedah and leased it to an operator in Kelantan, receiving RM500 monthly. 'This is in breach of the conditions. When they were asked to submit a GPS report, they couldn't because the GPS was not even activated,' he told reporters during a press conference here. He stressed that the revocation of the permit is permanent, with no opportunity for appeal. Loke also addressed the fatal crash involving nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) policemen in Teluk Intan, announcing that a preliminary report on the incident will be published tomorrow on the Transport Ministry's official website, The Vibes reported. He said the report includes technical findings from Puspakom and the Road Transport Department (RTD). 'The preliminary findings were presented to the Cabinet earlier today, but the full report has yet to be completed. 'This is an initial report, not the final one. The aim is to allow the public to understand the facts and provide researchers with access to data concerning road safety issues, ultimately contributing towards improving the overall road safety landscape,' was quoted as saying.

PJ police unleash drones to crack down on motorcycle lane violations
PETALING JAYA: Errant motorcycle riders beware, as PJ police are using drones for the first time, looking out for riders who did not use the designated motorcycle lanes along the Federal Highway. Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Shahrulnizam Ja'afar said the operation, which was conducted along KM28.4 of the highway on Wednesday (June 11), focused on reducing the number of accidents involving motorcyclists, especially fatal ones along the Federal Highway. "We are cooperating with the Police Air Unit (PGU) for the operation by using drones. "Once the offender is spotted on the drone, they will be issued summonses on the spot. "For the few exceptions that might have escaped, we would have already recorded their registration numbers, and summonses will be sent directly to their homes," he told reporters during the operation on Wednesday. He urged motorcycle riders to use the designated lanes to lessen the risks of being involved in accidents and other hazards. "I understand riders do not prefer to use the lanes as they are less than desirable, as some parts of the motorcycle lanes could be dark at night, while if it rains, such areas might also be flooded. "Our operation is conducted during peak hours during the day, especially in the morning," he said. A total of 47 summonses were issued for various offences, he said. "Some 16 offences were detected using drones," he said. Within 30 minutes, 32 summonses were issued during the operation, he said. "Most of the summonses were issued to riders not using the designated motorcycle lanes under Section 79(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said, adding that some 16km of the highway was under the jurisdiction of PJ police. He stated that the operation aimed to enforce laws and raise awareness among road users, particularly motorcyclists, about the importance of complying with traffic regulations. "We are focusing on motorcycle riders, as 70% of fatal accidents in the district involved them. "We will continue to conduct such operations using drones from time to time," he said.
