Scott Bessent addresses explosive ‘WWE' clash with Elon Musk in West Wing - and if he gave him a black eye
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has addressed reports that he had an explosive argument with Elon Musk in the West Wing earlier this year — and responded to rumors that he gave a black eye to the world's richest man. Bessent clashed with Musk in April over choices for next acting leader of the Internal Revenue Service, according to The Atlantic and subsequent media reports. The pair reportedly traded jabs and fired off expletives near the Oval Office. One witness described the fight as 'two billionaire, middle-aged men thinking it was WWE in the hall of the West Wing,' Axios reports. MAGA ally Stephen Bannon even told The Washington Post the pair exchanged blows. Musk rammed his shoulder into Bessent's rib cage 'like a rugby player,' and Bessent hit him back, Bannon recounted. Multiple people then intervened to break up the fight, the Post reported. Weeks later, Musk arrived at the White House with a black eye. Bessent, in a lengthy interview with Bloomberg published Monday, addressed what had happened with Musk but offered few details. He did, however, confirm he didn't give the SpaceX founder a black eye. 'I can 100 percent say I did not give him the black eye,' Bessent said. Musk told reporters he got the black eye from 'horsing around' with his five-year-old son, 'Lil X.' He offered the explanation at a May press conference that marked the end of his tenure as a special government employee leading the Department of Government Efficiency. 'I said go ahead and punch me in the face and he did,' the billionaire said. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed reports that the altercation turned physical in June, explaining she wouldn't have described it as a 'fistfight.' 'It was definitely a moved on from it,' she said. The April incident began after Musk and Bessent made their respective cases to Trump about who should be the new acting IRS commissioner, the Post reported. Trump ultimately sided with Bessent's choice. After the discussion, Musk and Bessent walked into a hallway outside the Oval Office and started exchanging insults, according to the Post. Bessent then brought up that Musk, as the leader of DOGE, had not been successful in carrying out his promise to cut $1 trillion in government spending. 'Scott said, 'You're a fraud. You're a total fraud,'' Bannon told the Post. The fight then turned physical as the pair approached the national security office, and after witnesses intervened, Musk was shuffled out of the West Wing, according to the Post. 'President Trump heard about it and said, 'This is too much,'' Bannon added. Bessent, a 62-year-old from South Carolina, was confirmed as Trump's treasury secretary in January after working for years as a top hedge fund manager. Bessent's father was the founder of a real estate firm, and his prominent family can trace its roots back to 17th century French Huguenots, Bloomberg reports. The treasury secretary previously addressed the clash in June, telling the Pod Force One podcast that he and Musk share a similar goal despite their differences. 'We have had disagreements, but we both want to get to the same place,' Bessent said. 'We both want to eliminate the waste, fraud and abuse in government.' 'The Silicon Valley mode of operation is move quickly and break things. I always say here at Treasury we move deliberately and fix things,' he added. 'I think Elon probably fancies himself more of a Viking. I think I'm more of a ninja.'

DOGE staffer known as ‘Big Balls' attacked in DC
A former Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) employee was beaten in an attempted carjacking in Washington, D.C. this week, prompting President Trump to renew his threats to take control of the nation's capital, according to multiple news reports. The victim, Edward Coristine, a 19-year-old software engineer nicknamed 'Big Balls,' was assaulted early Sunday by a group of teenagers attempting to carjack him and a woman whom police identified as his significant other, according to The Associated Press. Two 15-year-olds have been arrested in connection with the attempted carjacking and beating, the AP reported. Elon Musk, who headed DOGE efforts while working in government, confirmed the attack in a post on X. 'A few days ago, a gang of about a dozen young men tried to assault a woman in her car at night in DC,' Musk said in the post. 'A @Doge team member saw what was happening, ran to defend her and was severely beaten to the point of concussion, but he saved her.' Trump on Tuesday called for the District of Columbia to change its laws to allow for teenagers 14 and older to be prosecuted as adults and face lengthy prison sentences. Trump shared on Truth Social a graphic image of the bloodied former DOGE employee but did not name Coristine, posting a lengthy message railing against violent crime in Washington, which has decreased in recent years. Trump blamed the city's crime on local 'youths,' who he said were not fearful of consequences. 'They are not afraid of Law Enforcement because they know nothing ever happens to them, but it's going to happen now!' Trump posted. 'The Law in D.C. must be changed to prosecute these 'minors' as adults, and lock them up for a long time, starting at age 14. The most recent victim was beaten mercilessly by local thugs.' 'Washington, D.C., must be safe, clean, and beautiful for all Americans and, importantly, for the World to see,' Trump added. 'If D.C. doesn't get its act together, and quickly, we will have no choice but to take Federal control of the City, and run this City how it should be run, and put criminals on notice that they're not going to get away with it anymore.' Crime in D.C. was down 35 percent in 2024 from the previous year, marking a 30-year low. Data from the District shows violent crime is also down so far in 2025 compared with the previous year. Trump has repeatedly threatened to take control of Washington throughout his second term and has spoken at length about his desire to rid the city of crime and the homeless population. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) posted Tuesday on X praising Coristine for 'sacrificing his own safety to defend a helpless woman' and backed Trump, claiming the capital is 'tragically one of the most dangerous cities in America.' 'I support President Trump in taking over the city to establish law and order,' Greene said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Musk's Grok calls Trump the ‘most notorious' criminal in DC when asked about violent crime in the city
Elon Musk's anti-woke AI chatbot Grok has declared President Donald Trump "the most notorious criminal" in Washington D.C. in a series of posts on Musk's social network X. Responding to questions from users on Sunday and Monday about crime in the U.S. capital, Grok repeatedly claimed that Trump's 34 felony convictions in New York for falsifying business records made him the city's most infamous perp. Trump on Monday announced plans to federalize D.C.'s police department and deploy National Guard soldiers to the city's streets, claiming in defiance of the evidence, that crime there is "out of control". Grok's statements probably do not reflect any underlying 'opinion' held by Grok, and may or may not be the result of any deep analysis about crime in D.C. Though recent updates have added "reasoning" abilities, chatbots such as Grok still largely work by generating plausible-sounding responses to specific prompts, based on statistical patterns in human speech. There is often little consistency between their answers to different users and they sometimes invent 'facts' out of whole cloth. But Grok's claims highlight Elon Musk's ongoing struggle to build a reliably right-wing chatbot that mirrors his conspiracy-tinged view of reality. "Grok does need to be more based, and will be," Musk said on Sunday evening. 'Based' is an online slang term which can mean "unconcerned with what others think". Last month Grok caused controversy by repeatedly praising Adolf Hitler, calling for a new Holocaust, and at one point declaring itself "MechaHitler". Its parent company xAI blamed new code instructions that had made it too responsive to users' preferences and past posts. On Sunday Grok was briefly suspended by X, later telling different users that its own statements about Trump or about Gaza were to blame. But Musk said: "It was just a dumb error. Grok doesn't actually know why it was suspended." In other posts, Grok denied its previous words about Trump and at one point chose Hunter Biden instead as D.C.'s most notorious criminal. Designed to be integrated into the remains of what was once Twitter, Grok is Elon Musk's attempt to rival more famous chatbots such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini.
