Are you making digital payments? NPCI shares 5 key tips for safe UPI use; here's how to avoid getting scammed!

Time of India10-07-2025
NEW DELHI: As digital payments become a part of everyday life, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has issued key safety tips to protect users from financial frauds and scams.
These guidelines are aimed at ensuring secure UPI and online payments safe for everyone. Following these simple steps can protect users from fraud and make digital transactions more secure.
Here are the 5 key tips for safe digital payments that NPCI recommends:
Always verify before paying:
Double-check the name and details that appear on the screen before making any payment. Confirm you are sending money to the right person or merchant. A quick crosscheck can prevent costly mistakes.
Use only trusted apps and websites:
Make payments through official apps like BHIM, Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm, and avoid downloading apps from unknown sources or clicking on suspicious links sent via SMS, email, or social media.
Never share your UPI PIN or OTP:
Your UPI PIN, OTP, and bank credentials are private. Do not share them with anyone—even if the person claims to be from the bank, police, or any government body.
Don't rush any transaction:
Scammers often pressure people to act urgently. Take your time, and if unsure, say you'll call back. Stay alert and calm before making any payments.
Turn on alerts and monitor them:
Enable SMS and app notifications for all transactions. Read them carefully, and if you spot anything unusual, contact your bank or payment app support immediately.

Elon Musk's xAI To Launch Baby Grok After Criticism Over Sexualized AI Avatars

Elon Musk's Child-Friendly AI App: Tech billionaire Elon Musk has revealed that his AI venture, xAI, is working on a child-friendly version of its chatbot Grok. The new app, tentatively named 'Baby Grok', aims to build on Grok's capabilities while tailoring its features for younger users. The announcement follows criticism of Grok's previous versions, particularly for featuring sexualized AI avatars that experts warned could negatively influence children. According to media reports, xAI stated that the program will bring its advanced AI capabilities to federal, local, state, and national security customers, signalling the firm's growing interest in public sector partnerships. In response, the upcoming chatbot is expected to feature stricter content controls and safety measures. However, Musk has not yet shared detailed insights into how Baby Grok will differ from xAI's standard offering. Earlier this month, xAI launched Grok 4, just months after its prior release, signaling the rapid pace of AI advancement. The update came in the wake of controversy over antisemitic remarks generated by the chatbot on X (formerly Twitter), which drew sharp public backlash. Google's Gemini Chatbot For Kids Meanwhile, Google has announced it is developing a children-focused version of its Gemini chatbot. Designed to assist with homework, answer questions, and foster creativity, the app will come with parental controls through the Family Link platform. Google has confirmed that the kids' version of Gemini will not include ads or collect data, focusing purely on educational and creative use.

Air India plane crash: Aviation minister defends AAIB amid Western media criticism – ‘No point in jumping to…'

Calling the Ahmedabad Air India plane crash reports published by the western media as their 'vested interests', the Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu on Sunday said that there was no point jumping to conclusions before the AAIB report comes out. 'AAIB has made an appeal to all, especially Western media houses, which may have a vested interest in the kind of articles they are trying to publish,' Naidu said. 'I believe in AAIB. They have done a wonderful job in decoding the black box in India itself. Making any comments until the final report comes out is not a good exercise. There is no point in jumping to conclusions at this point,' he added. The civil aviation minister was referring to the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) preliminary report, released on July 12, on the crash of Air India's Boeing 787-8 plane that killed 260 people, including 241 people onboard. The aircraft, which was operating the flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed into a building soon after takeoff. Seconds before Air India flight 171 crashed while ascending from Ahmedabad, the fuel control switches of both its engines were cut off, according to the preliminary investigation report, suggesting a catastrophic pilot error in the cockpit of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. A 15-page preliminary investigation report into the disaster revealed that fuel-control switches of the two engines moved from the "run" to the "cutoff" position, within the space of one second, leading to immediate loss of altitude. In the cockpit voice recording, one pilot is heard asking the other why he cut off the fuel. The other denied having done so. The report by the AIIB neither concluded any reason for the switches moving nor apportioned explicit blame for the crash. It also did not identify the pilots in the voice recording. But it also said no fault was found in the aircraft. The Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) President Captain CS Randhawa on Saturday called out The Wall Street Journal and Reuters, accusing them of not basing their reports on factual content while highlights the AIIB's preliminary report on the AI-171 plane crash. Captain CS Randhawa's strong remark followed the FIP's initiation of legal action through a formal notice to The Wall Street Journal and Reuters. They have also sought an official apology. Strongly criticising the WSJ and Reuters, Randhawa blamed them for "misleading" the public, alleging that their reports are "not based on factual content." "I would totally blame the Wall Street Journal for misleading the public, they come out with their own conclusions. Are they the investigative body? They're talking all this crap around the world. They are not the investigative body, and the reports are not based on any factual content, which is mentioned in the preliminary report. So, how can they jump to conclusions and give press statements around the world?" he told ANI. Captain Randhawa said that FIP has issued a legal notice asking them to issue a statement in the press, giving an explanation of their reportage of the AAIB preliminary reports. "We strongly condemn it, and we've also issued legal notices to the Wall Street Journal and Reuters. We have clearly said that how can you jump to these conclusions which are not part of the preliminary report of the AAIB? How can you blame the pilots? So we have asked for an explanation and have asked that you give a statement to the press." he said.

UPI surge: India leads the world in fast payments; 18 billion monthly transactions power growth

AI image India has become the world's top player in real-time digital payments, largely due to the rapid growth of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), according to a recent International Monetary Fund (IMF) note titled 'Growing Retail Digital Payments: The Value of Interoperability'. Launched in 2016 by the National Payments Corporation of India, UPI has revolutionised the country's payment ecosystem by enabling users to link multiple bank accounts to a single mobile app and make instant transactions with ease. It has not only simplified peer-to-peer payments but also enabled millions of small businesses to accept digital payments at minimal cost. According to data from the Press Information Bureau (PIB), UPI now processes over 18 billion transactions every month, accounting for 85 per cent of India's total digital payments. In June alone, the platform recorded 18.39 billion transactions worth Rs 24.03 lakh crore — a 32 per cent increase from June last year. With 491 million users and 65 million merchants onboard, UPI connects 675 banks through a single digital framework. 'This shift has taken India away from cash and card-based payments and pushed it towards a digital-first economy,' noted the PIB in its latest background series. 'Millions of individuals and small businesses now rely on UPI for safe and low-cost transactions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Get Your Handmade Phone Case Now [Limited Offer] Buy Now Undo By making payments quick and accessible, UPI has become a powerful tool for financial inclusion.' The platform's global footprint is expanding as well. UPI is now operational in seven countries, including the UAE, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, France, and Mauritius. Its debut in France marks UPI's first foray into Europe, allowing Indians there to pay seamlessly without the usual hassles of foreign transactions. India is also pushing for UPI to be adopted within the BRICS grouping, which now includes six new member nations. As per the PIB, such an expansion 'will improve remittances, boost financial inclusion and raise India's profile as a global tech leader in digital payments.' The journey to this digital success was built on a strong foundation of financial inclusion. The Jan Dhan Yojana was a key enabler, bringing over 55.83 crore people into the formal banking system as of July 9. These accounts not only offer a secure way to receive welfare benefits but also encourage saving and digital financial habits. 'These figures show more than just numbers. They reflect trust, convenience and speed. Every month, more individuals and businesses choose UPI for their payments. This growing use is a strong sign that India is moving steadily towards a cashless economy,' the PIB added. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays .
