Promoting wellness in slums through healthcare services
The initiative has been taken up in collaboration with the SBI Foundation.
On Friday, an awareness camp was organised at Relli Veedhi.
About 193 people took part in the camp held in the presence of GVMC staff, ward members, secretariat personnel, and health workers.
A mobile medical unit consisting of Dr Aditya Ranganath Vempala, Mounika, pharmacist, Parvathi, lab technician, among others, reached out to the residents of the locality.
As part of the medical services, a dedicated team comprising a doctor, pharmacist, lab technician, staff nurse, and vehicle operator visit the urban slum areas twice a month, conduct health checkups and blood tests.
Those, who need further treatment, will be referred to relevant government hospitals, thereby helping many families lead healthy lives, the director of the organisation informed.
So far, the project has provided various healthcare services to 1,603 people, he added.
According to the project coordinator, sanitation drives, awareness camps, and a mega specialised medical camp are organised once in three months to ensure healthcare services are accessible to slum dwellers and residents in rural areas.

Shun plastic and use eco-friendly products, urges Collector
District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad on Saturday urged the citizens to strictly avoid plastic items and only use eco-friendly alternatives to protect the environment. He also stressed on the need for collective efforts to fight against plastic ban. The Collector attended 'Swachh Andhra-Swarna Andhra' programme organised by the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) at the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (RRR) centre at Yendada Junction. Speaking at the programme, Mr. Prasad said that the government has been organising 'Swachh Andhra - Swarna Andhra' programmes across the State every third Saturday of the month to raise awareness on cleanliness. He called on citizens to support this cause in large numbers by not using single-use plastics and switch to environment-friendly alternatives. 'Single-use plastic waste often clogs drains and water bodies, leading to serious health risks during the rainy season. Sanitation workers risk their lives to remove plastic waste from drains every day. Plastics entering the ocean are consumed by fish, which eventually enter human consumption and may lead to severe diseases such as cancer,' he said. He urged the public to use alternatives like paper, cloth, jute bags, steel and glass utensils, ceramic plates and cups, and reusable water bottles. He also administered a 'Swachh Andhra Pledge' against plastic and released an awareness poster titled 'Let's End Plastic Pollution Together'. Corporator Lodagala Apparao, GVMC Additional Commissioner D.V. Ramana Murthy, Chief Medical Officer Dr. E.N.V. Naresh Kumar and others attended. Sanitation workers and NGO representatives who contributed significantly helping the city win 'Safaimitra Surakshit Sheher' award were felicitated. He later visited various stalls showcasing eco-friendly alternatives and applauded their efforts.

GVMC opens new sports complex in Gajuwaka
Visakhapatnam: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has developed the Rajiv sports complex, located in Vikas Nagar, with several sporting facilities, including an indoor stadium, swimming pool, and cultural centre. GVMC mayor P Srinivasa Rao, along with Visakhapatnam MP M Sribharat, TDP state president and Gajuwaka MLA Palla Srinivasa Rao, deputy mayor Dalli Govindaraju, and 65th ward corporator Boddu Narasimha Pathrudu, jointly inaugurated the newly developed sports facilities at the Rajiv sports complex. As part of the inauguration, a badminton court was officially opened inside the indoor stadium, where the dignitaries took part in a game of badminton. Addressing the gathering, the mayor said that, as Gajuwaka is an industrial hub, there is a strong need to provide a recreational and wellness-oriented sports complex for the public. He urged residents to maintain cleanliness and make regular use of the facilities to safeguard their health. Vizag MP M Sribharat expressed his pleasure at such a state-of-the-art stadium being made accessible to the people of Gajuwaka. He suggested to the Mayor that a pickleball court also be established at the complex soon. He noted that, due to increasing dependence on mobile phones, people are neglecting physical activity, exercise, and mental well-being, leading to various health issues. He called on parents to encourage their children to participate in sports, highlighting the vital role that sports play in promoting good health.
