Panchkula: An 83-year-old retired deputy commandant from the defence sector has been running from pillar to post for over a year, trying to get his muddy water supply issue resolved, but despite all efforts, the problem remains unsolved.
On Monday, Suresh Aggarwal, a resident of Sector 4 who lives with his wife, attended the Samdhaan Shivir chaired by deputy commissioner Monika Gupta and personally raised his long-standing issue of muddy water supply. However, even this effort failed to bring relief. Following the DC's instructions, a water supply worker inspected his house again, but by Wednesday, the problem persisted. He is still receiving muddy water.
"We have two filters and get them serviced regularly, replacing old parts with new ones. Yet, we find so much mud in them. Water supply officials have visited my house multiple times, but the issue hasn't been resolved in over a year. Even approaching the DC didn't help," lamented the 83-year-old retired deputy commandant.
Suresh Aggarwal is not alone in facing this ordeal. Subhash Chandra, a captain in the merchant navy and president of the Sector 2 residents' welfare society, shared a similar concern.

"For the past two months, residents here have been receiving muddy water. We contacted the junior engineer and other officials, but none could provide a satisfactory technical explanation. The problem continues to persist," he told TOI.
"Although muddy water is present only during the first 10–15 minutes of both morning and evening supply times, just think about the amount of water wasted when all residents have to let it flow out.
At a time when we talk about water conservation, the reality is quite the opposite," said the 68-year-old serving captain.
Rakesh Aggarwal, president of Vikas Manch Panchkula and a resident of Sector 12, added, "Muddy water supply usually happens during repair work. But here, such maintenance is frequent, almost every month or two. The old tubewells often face issues like pipeline breakage or leakage. When repairs are carried out, muddy water continues for two to three days, causing inconvenience to residents."
Previously, Sector 15 frequently reported dirty water supply, but residents say the situation there has improved for now.
Meanwhile, Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) maintains that everything is under control. HSVP executive engineer Shamsher Singh Dhillon said, "There is no muddy water supply in Panchkula. If we receive any specific complaint, we address it promptly. In some cases, when we treat Bhakra water using fitkari (alum), and taps remain unused for a few days due to a closed house, muddy water may appear in old pipelines.
"
So far, residents of the trans-Ghaggar sectors have not reported muddy water issues. Their concern is low water supply.

Transport From Slavery To Salvation

"The bitterest thing in today's sorrow is the memory of yesterday's joy," wrote Kahlil Gibran, but to let go is easier said than done. It is one of the most challenging things to do. Material objects metamorphose into immaterial objects sooner or later. Ironically, it is physically nonexistent entities like emotions, sentiments and memories that turn into attachments from which it is painful to detach. Letting go does not necessarily mean getting rid of or throwing things out. The problem arises when possessions become obsessions. A stack of never-to-be-worn clothes, which, if given away, could help some; out-of-action gadgets, which feng shui will advise not to keep as they gather negative energies; chipped ceramic cups; never-to-be-read list can go on and on. Besides collecting dust and creating clutter, they remind us of days that never return. All because we have allowed ourselves to become victims of sentiments or emotions. Detachment does not hurt, but attachment does. Memories do not occupy any physical place, though they are often described as bittersweet. The past does not come back but can still impact the present and future. "The root of all suffering is attachment," said the Buddha . These attachments can be both material and mental. According to Buddhism , the key to overcoming suffering is letting go of desires, attachments and aversions. In the universe, which is transcendental, ever changing, when we 'hang on', we go against the law of nature, and suffer. Possession and past restrict, suffocate, confine, ensnare and entangle. According to the Bhagwad Gita , "Attachments interfere with a person's ability to think clearly or rationally. When the person is free from attachments, he becomes equal to attractions, aversions and intelligence." Vairagya, relinquishment, translates into freedom from bondages and bindings, a transport from slavery to salvation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo In Christianity, renunciation is the forsaking of worldly desires and possessions to follow the path of Jesus Christ and his teachings. Jesus once advised a rich ruler, "Sell everything you own and give to the poor, and you will have treasures in heaven. Then come and follow me." Jainism speaks of aparigraha - attachment brings suffering and sorrow, which is why all worldly possessions and relations are to be given up. Islam says, "Detachment means nothing should own you." According to the Maitri Upanishad , "Control of thought is liberation." One must go beyond the elements, senses, object of senses, greed, envy, leisure, self-love, anger, and lust to be on the path of liberation and realising Brahmn. Renunciation does not mean being nonloving, indifferent or apathetic. It means surmounting obsession, weakness, addiction, ego or mania as these negative entities cast shadows on our thoughts, affect reason, relationships and realities. Imprisonment by materials and moments is the angst that prevents living and enjoying the present. Isha Upanishad says, "Whatever moves in this moving world is enveloped by God. Therefore, enjoy renunciation; do not covet what belongs to others." Longing for what is not ours can only bring about contempt and conflicts. The best lesson of attachment with detachment is the Sun. Without any demand, desire, or discrimination, the Sun, benevolent niskamkarmi, sakha, sustains life on earth and the earth itself with its light and warmth. 'BirdMan' Sunjoy Monga passes away at 63

MUMBAI: Nature lovers and activists have expressed deep shock at the passing away of the veteran naturalist, author and the BirdMan, Sunjoy Monga (63), on Wednesday, leaving behind his beloved City Forest, as he used to call the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, one of his favourite birding haunts. Monga was the first green activist to lament the rampant destruction of nearly 85% of wetlands in Uran in 2006-07, and urged all nature lovers to pull up their socks and protect the surviving wetlands -- or the flamingos may disappear forever from our coast. Environmentalist from Conservation Action Trust, Debi Goenka, said: "I knew Monga for nearly 50 years. His love for wetlands, forests, grasslands, had taken him towards Nature's path where he watched, researched and documented wildlife. It is a big loss for all of us.'' Navi Mumbai based Sunil Agarwal of Save Navi Mumbai Mangroves and Wetlands group, said: "Monga was a part of our group and guided us on how to secure and preserve our wetlands and mangroves which are still threatened by plans to construct more concrete jungles. He had started the famous Mumbai Bird Races 20 years ago, and many citizens including children queued up to participate in them. Despite suffering from cancer, he continued to do various birding and nature trail tasks, especially to encourage kids. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo '' Mumbai based wildlife biologist, and arachnologist Javed Ahmed, who first met Sunjoy as a 16-year-old, said, "Sunjoy always treated people as his peers, irrespective of their age difference, and experience. He was always humble, and never hesitant to ask, and learn about the various bugs and invertebrates we encountered on our many trails. He was my mentor.'' Monga's School Nature Education Programs in the form of 'Chhoton ka Funda - Hara Banao Project', and 'Young Rangers' reached out, and interacted with students of over a hundred schools in Mumbai, getting thousands of youngsters to take an interest in the great outdoors, while informing them of the crucial role of nature in our day to day lives. Activist B N Kumar of NatConnect Foundation stated: "I had spoken to Monga two years ago when he was fighting to save the Lokhandwala lake in Mumbai which was in a bad shape then. He was an inspiration for others to protect various wetlands and green forests.''

Free online coaching for II PU science students to begin on June 9

Mangaluru: Following the success of students from govt PU colleges in CET 2025, the state has initiated free online coaching for CET, NEET and other entrance exams for II PU science stream students at govt PU colleges. These online classes will commence from June 9 for the 2025-26 academic year. Online classes are held for one hour before the commencement of regular classes and one hour after college hours. Sindhu B Rupesh, the director at the department of pre-university education, Bengaluru, told TOI while last year's free coaching began in November, this year, the programme will commence from the start of the new academic year. When told to elaborate on how the coaching offered during the last academic year helped students crack entrance tests, Rupesh said: "We collected data on govt college students who availed online coaching and secured CET rankings. This data was submitted to the state govt. Overall, it did have a positive impact," the official said. She further said: "Those who clear the entrance test will receive study materials for free." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Sources from the department said at least two govt college candidates who attended the coaching secured top 100 rankings. With the start of free coaching for entrance tests, there is a growing demand now from unaided colleges to grant permission for integrated coaching on their college premises as well. Rupesh said the govt would take a call on that soon.
