MACC nabs third cop in RM15mil false claims probe

The Star27-04-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: Another police officer has been detained in an ongoing investigation by graft busters into a false claim of RM15mil involving the Command & Control, Communication & Computer Integration (C4i) system procurement contract.
This brings the total of those detained in the case to seven individuals.
The C4i system is aimed at strengthening policing by improving the monitoring, communication and coordination within the police force with the goal to reduce crimes.
Sources said the 54-year-old male suspect, who holds the rank of superintendent, was detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on Friday.
'He is believed to have accepted bribes from contractors and subcontractors for the procurement of a service contract to maintain the C4i system,' a source said.
The man has since been remanded for seven days.
MACC officers conducted searches at his office and home in Semenyih, seizing documents that showed he received bribes from the contractors, sources said.
'So far, the MACC has frozen and seized RM7.6mil in funds and assets,' they said, adding that MACC recorded the statements of 15 witnesses and detainees.
Previously, six people, including a company director, a chief financial officer and two police officers with the ranks of superintendent and inspector were detained over the same case.
Sources said the suspects – five men and a woman aged between 30 and 60 – were detained in an operation codenamed Ops C4i at about 8pm on Wednesday after their statements were recorded at the MACC headquarters.
'Initial investigation indicated that all suspects were believed to have committed the offence between 2022 and 2025.
'They had conspired to make a false claim worth RM15mil, but some of the work did not meet the requirements of the contract,' they added.
A source said the Home Ministry had granted the project, which has an overall worth of RM70mil, to the police force.

PM: Breaches in intelligence agencies spell disaster

KUALA LUMPUR: Any compromise on breaches within intelligence agencies would spell disaster for the country, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today. He said the government would neither tolerate nor compromise on infiltration or misconduct within national security agencies, stressing that such issues must not be politicised. "This is a matter of national security. "It is not about party politics or government versus opposition. "If smuggling has entered an intelligence agency, that is a huge matter. "If there is a cartel profiting by selling secrets, this is a major threat to the nation. "We will not hide behind excuses, because once we start compromising on breaches within our intelligence agencies, it spells disaster for the nation," he told the Dewan Rakyat today. Commenting on the arrest of five senior military officers , including two from the Malaysian Defence Intelligence Organisation, Anwar said he had directed the armed forces chief and the director of the intelligence division to provide him with initial reports. Investigations, he said, indicated that the cases dated back to 2020 but were only surfacing now as the current government had given the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) full independence to act. He said in the past, old cases were left unresolved, allowing some individuals to amass billions. Now, the authorities are thoroughly reviewing these cases, and if there is evidence, prosecution will follow. "But if there are major cases, do not defend them. This is not about sympathy or revenge. What revenge? This is no light issue. "I have instructed the armed forces chief to conduct the investigations seriously, and the defence minister is taking this matter seriously. "It was even raised again yesterday with His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. "We will uncover everything. This is a matter of national security, which cannot be compromised," he said. On why such cases were only exposed now, Anwar said the question should be directed at past leaders. He urged against politicising the matter, stressing that action would be taken regardless of who was implicated. "If there is evidence against anyone, whether it involves the son of the Pandan member of parliament (Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli) or the Zara Qairina Mahathir case highlighted by the Home Ministry, do not use it as a political weapon. "If any MPs have additional information, provide it. I have no issue. If the defence minister has details and wishes to present an initial report, please do so.

MACC investigation focused solely on former employee, says SunCon

KUALA LUMPUR: Sunway Construction Group Bhd (SunCon) has confirmed that the investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) launched in July is focused solely on the personal conduct of a former employee. The investigation does not involve the company or its subsidiaries, it clarified in a statement today. SunCon issued the statement following the receipt of a letter from the MACC dated Aug 18, 2025, which confirmed the company was not under investigation under any provision of the MACC Act 2009, including Section 17A. According to SunCon, the matter was "an isolated incident". The company reiterated that the employee current under investigation by the MACC has been terminated. It has also initiated a comprehensive audit and review of its tendering procedures to identify and address any procedural gaps across its operations. SunCon said the move reflects its ongoing commitment to strengthening internal controls and safeguarding against misconduct involving employees or subcontractors. "We reaffirm our commitment to the highest standards of transparency, governance and compliance,' said managing director Liew Kok Wing. "We want to assure stakeholders that the integrity of SunCon's operations remains intact and uncompromised.' Liew said the company has further enhanced its internal controls following MACC's review to ensure project delivery is not affected.

TMJ's connections helped bust smuggling ring, says MACC

The agency received a lot of information from Johor regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim's connections, says its chief commissioner. (Bernama pic) CYBERJAYA : The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's recent bust of a smuggling syndicate masterminded by several senior armed forces officials was greatly aided by the Johor regent's connections, says MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki. He said Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, who is Tunku Mahkota Johor, had given his full cooperation in the matter, to help eradicate smuggling through the borders. 'We received a lot of information from Tunku Mahkota Johor's networking,' he said at an anti-bribery students' convention at Multimedia University here today. MACC recently arrested and remanded 10 people, including five senior armed forces officials and two online journalists for suspected involvement in a smuggling syndicate. The others were a company manager, an administrative assistant for the Malaysian Medical Association and an Indonesian woman. They were arrested in the Klang Valley in an operation by MACC with the aid of the police.
