"You Betrayed The Tamil People...": Udhayanidhi Stalin Rips Into AIADMK
Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Thursday accused arch-rival Edappadi K Palaniswami of "trying to pave the way for the BJP... to gain ground" before next year's election.
Mr Stalin, son of Chief Minister MK Stalin, said the AIADMK boss had 'betrayed' the Tamil people by aligning with the BJP after claiming he would not, and warned the saffron party, which has historically struggled for traction in the state, it "can never touch the heart of the Tamils".
Mr Stalin also framed the context of the forthcoming election; "... this is not just political... it is a battle to protect our land, pride, and mother tongue," he said, underlining two issues - delimitation and 'Hindi imposition' - that are likely to dominate poll rhetoric on all sides.
"The AIADMK is desperately trying to pave the way for the BJP... but as long as there are cadres in black and red (the DMK's colours), saffron will never gain ground in Tamil Nadu," Mr Stalin said.
"Edappadi K Palaniswami once confidently said there would be no alliance with the BJP. But he has switched lanes... he went into hiding and secretly struck a deal. This betrayal must be uprooted. The BJP can never touch the heart of Tamil people," the Deputy Chief Minister said.
The BJP and AIADMK were allies for two major recent elections - the 2019 federal and 2021 state polls - but were beaten by the DMK-Congress combine on both occasions. They broke up in 2023 after snide attacks on AIADMK icons by K Annamlai, then the BJP's state unit boss.
The split was welcomed by the AIADMK, which called it their "happiest moment".
They contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election solo but the DMK and its allies won that too.
In June that year, despite a crushing defeat in the election, EPS insisted there could be not alliance with the BJP, or any national party, since they could not understand the problems of the Tamil people.
In November that view was unchanged, senior leader D Jayakumar repeated his boss' sentiment.
But then in April they revived ties; the BJP acknowledging, perhaps, the need for a regional face in a political landscape they have never quite understood, and the AIADMK, boosted by the support but wary of the impact of the alliance on voters from minorities and marginalised communities.
That wariness was evident in comments last week about the BJP being a 'silent partner'.
At a DMK event in Chennai Thursday, Udhayanidhi Stalin emphasised that 'betrayal' and also re-ignited the language row, claiming the BJP-led centre had not given "a single rupee" for Tamil Nadu's education sector, but gave party-ruled Uttar Pradesh and Assam "thousands of crores".
The DMK has been fiercely critical of the centre over the three-language formula set out in the National Education Policy of 2020, in which Hindi has been made a 'third language' at schools.
The Tamil Nadu government (and other political parties from non-Hindi speaking state, such as Maharashtra's Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS) have protested the 'imposition' of the northern language, which is an emotive issue and was even the reason for violence in Chennai in 1963.
The language row flared up in March after the Tamil party accused the BJP of withholding funds for the education sector, a charge Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan later acknowledged.
Since then the two have frequently traded barbs, and the DMK has called out the AIADMK for its alliance, arguing "some (had) failed to understand the agenda of turning India into a Hindi nation".

DMK should ignore opposition to separate law against honour-based crimes from caste outfits: Thirumavalavan
Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi founder Thol. Thirumavalavan, on Wednesday, said the DMK government should ignore the opposition of the caste outfits in the issue of enacting a separate law against honour-based crimes and pave way for a 'democratic revolution'. Mr Thirumavalavan met with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, along with CPI and CPI (M) state secretaries, R. Mutharasan and P. Shanmugam, on Wednesday. On the other hand, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee observed a day's fast led by its SC wing leader, M.P. Ranjan Kumar, inside the Sathyamurthy Bhavan. Mr. Thirumavalavan pointed out the Hindu Marriage (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Act, 1967, which legalised self-respect marriages, and the implementation of Mandal Commission's recommendations, providing 27% to backward classes in government jobs and in education, also faced stiff opposition from upper castes and dominant castes. 'These were accepted by the larger society over time. The separate law is not a law in favour of scheduled castes. Honour-based crimes are national phenomena – such crimes are happening across communities and States and even within SCs and OBCs. Even recently, an OBC boy attacked another OBC boy for speaking to a girl from his own caste. It is a law against regressiveness and backwardness. CM Stalin should ignore the opposition of caste outfits as the democratic forces within these communities would welcome it,' he told The Hindu. He explained to Mr Stalin about the need for a separate law to tackle such crimes and give it a special focus just as we have separate laws for crimes against women, Scheduled Castes and so on. 'We have given him several references that reiterate why such a law is needed as recommended by National Commission of Women, Law Commission of India, Supreme Court's directives in Shakti Vahini vs Union Of India case and bills introduced as private member bills in Parliament and also a Bill introduced by CPI-M MLA A. Soundarrajan in 2015 in Tamil Nadu Assembly. Even Rajasthan has introduced a separate law against it. We take pride in calling Tamil Nadu a land of social justice and we talk about Dravidian model. He listened to us patiently. He didn't give us any assurance but we hope CM Stalin would enact a separate law. It is needed today,' he said.

Blue Flag project to be expanded to three more Chennai beach stretches
Chennai's three beaches — Thiruvanmiyur, Palavakkam and Uthandi — are expected to be developed under the Blue Flag certification programme. Further, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to begin work on the second phase of the Marina Beach Blue Flag project — from the Mahatma Gandhi Statue to Nochi Nagar, opposite the Karaneeswarar Koil Street. After the inauguration of the Blue Flag project at Marina Beach by the Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Sunday, Mayor R. Priya said a total of 30 acres along Loop Road had been planned for the next stage. She further said the Detailed Project Report was being prepared for these sites, and the tender would be finalised soon. The works, estimated to cost over ₹6 crore for each beach, will be funded under the Tamil Nadu: Strengthening Coastal Resilience and the Economy Project, supported by the World Bank. The plan includes new toilets and changing rooms, wheelchair-accessible paths, solar lighting, waste bins, lifeguard stations and grey water treatment systems. Seating areas and Blue Flag programme-compliant signboards will also be installed. Dedicated access for persons with disabilities will be created, according to the GCC. 'A total ₹6.02 crore has been allocated for each beach. The works will take seven months to complete, and the beaches will then be maintained for another year under the same contract by the private party engaged,' an official said. There was no mention of shops in the proposals for any of the four Blue Flag projects. To this, the Mayor said the decision to remove shops in the first phase at Marina Beach received good response from the public. 'This is also crucial to keep the beach clean — a critical criterion for Blue Flag certification. A complex can be set up for authorised vendors, and illegal shopkeepers will be evicted as per GCC regulations,' she said.
