New York man charged after an investigation into stolen mail in Dunmore

Yahoo25-02-2025

A Bronx, New York, man faces charges following a monthslong investigation by Dunmore police into stolen mail in the borough.
Starting in November, the U.S. Postal Service mailbox on Harper Street had been the target of multiple thefts of parcels of mail, police said.
Among the mail removed from the mailbox were paper checks that were altered and deposited for large sums of money into various bank accounts, according to a criminal complaint.
Through the investigation, officers determined an individual or individuals would place a box – coated with sticky tape and connected to a string – into the opening of the mailbox to 'fish' for mail and pull it out of the box, police said.
Two devices were removed from the Harper Street mailbox during the investigation, officers said.
Dunmore police have investigated more than 10 fraud incidents since November, with victims being defrauded out of hundreds of thousands of dollars, per the criminal complaint.
On Friday around 12:58 a.m., officers stationed on the 100 block of North Blakely Street observed two males standing near the Harper Street mailbox and witnessed them pulling a device out of it, similar to the ones seized in the past, police said.

The males fled on foot when the police approached, but officers eventually apprehended one of them, Kaden Pierre, per the criminal complaint.
During an interview at police headquarters, Pierre told investigators he took an Uber to this area with a friend of his cousin, known only as 'Jose,' officers said.
Pierre told officers the two were in the area to pick up a PlayStation 5 and that he was accompanying 'Jose' when they ended up at the mailbox, police said.
When Pierre spoke with his grandmother from the Bronx during a phone call at police headquarters, he stated he 'wasn't doing anything,' but 'Jose' was engaged in the activity the police observed, per the criminal complaint.
Officers didn't locate the device and detained only one of the males — Pierre — seen near the mailbox Friday, police said.
Police charged Pierre, 18, with possessing an instrument of crime, theft by unlawful taking, engaging in criminal conspiracy, resisting arrest, loitering and prowling at night, and theft of mail.
As of Monday, Pierre remained jailed in Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of $10,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 3 at 11 a.m.

Karr, Smith evaluate task force's work thus far

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Senators Chris Karr and Jamie Smith of Sioux Falls are on opposite sides of the political isle in South Dakota's capital of Pierre, but with regard to Project Prison Reset's task force, they have similar evaluations. 'Being able to have the public input has been very important,' Smith, a Democrat, said Thursday. 'I think the first thing is transparency for all of us and being able to let the people know what's happening, let them voice their opinion and then make our decisions based upon the input that we've had from other people. I think that's gone really, really well.' Minnehaha County jail seeing more arrested by ICE 'It's been a transparent process,' Karr, a Republican, said Thursday. 'It's been inclusive. We've had great testimony from inmates to the public from different contractors that have stepped forward to give us their professional opinion on construction. I think this is what should have taken place the first time.' Project Prison Reset has just one more meeting before a special session of the state legislature learns about their recommendations for where and how big to build a new men's prison in South Dakota. Gov. Larry Rhoden launched the task force in the wake of the legislative failure to fund a new men's prison in Lincoln County between Harrisburg and Canton. Now, the task force has endorsed a plan for one or more locations at existing DOC facilities or in the Mitchell or Worthing areas. The cap for this plan is $600 million. But for Smith and Karr, it's not just about incarceration. 'What we don't want to do is cut corners, not include space that's needed for maybe programming, for education, for those technical trades,' Karr said. 'For educational opportunities, for treatment options, for mental health, all of those things have to be accounted for in the design that we do and what we build,' Smith said. 'Because ultimately, most of these people will get out of prison.' Project Prison Reset's task force is set to meet for the final time on July 8, and a special session of the state legislature is planned for July 22 when lawmakers can learn about the group's recommendations. A Manhattan, Montana, man who pleaded guilty to possessing and distributing methamphetamine was sentenced to 7 years in prison and five years supervised release, according to the Montana U.S. Attorney's office. U.S. District Judge Dana Christensen presided over the case. Kevin Andrew Bacon, 51, pleaded guilty in January to conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. According to a Wednesday U.S Attorney's office press release, law enforcement officers began investigating a drug trafficking ring operating around Butte in June 2022. According to court documents, agents allegedly discovered a conspiracy operating in part by sending drugs through the U.S. Postal Service from California to Montana. Several members of the drug trafficking ring operated out of a residence in Whitehall, according to court filings. The investigation led to the arrest of several conspirators in early January 2023, and the seizure of approximately 13 pounds of meth. On Feb 23, 2023, law enforcement located a package sent from California to 'Kevin Bacon' in Manhattan. Law enforcement searched the package and located 873.5 grams of actual methamphetamine inside. Bacon was arrested on Feb 28, 2023, when he arrived at the Manhattan post office to retrieve the package. He told investigators he had a friend in Whitehall who sold drugs and had asked Bacon to receive a package, which Bacon knew contained meth, to his P.O Box. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Lowney prosecuted the case. The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Homeland Security Investigations, Gallatin County Sheriff's Office and Montana Division of Criminal Investigation. The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, and to make neighborhoods safer for everyone.
