Ervin bemoans dip in 'performance levels'
Ballymena United manager Jim Ervin bemoaned a "dip in performance levels" by his players as they went down 2-1 at home to Larne in the Irish Premiership.Jordan McMullan's early goal had the Sky Blues ahead but Tiarnan O'Connor and Paul O'Neill struck to ensure all three points went back to east Antrim."I thought the performance levels that we've had over the past number of weeks just weren't there and we gave away two soft goals," lamented the Ballymena boss."We fell short but the effort, endeavour and commitment the boys showed me was incredible."Jordan followed up from his goal on Saturday which was pleasing but you've got to keep going to the next level because when you're playing Larne you have to make sure that you're on your game. Unfortunately tonight we weren't. I'm extremely disappointed with the result."Next up for United is the visit of League Cup winners Cliftonville to the Showgrounds."We now have to pick ourselves up with another huge game at home on Saturday against Cliftonville and we have to try and get back to winning ways," added Ervin.

Gudjohnsen threat returns to Windsor Park as NI prepare to face famous Icelandic name
Days later they hit back as David Healy scored a hat-trick in a stunning 3-2 victory over Spain that was followed by manager Lawrie Sanchez threatening to quit before staying in post. When asked if he could guarantee there would be no repeat of the 3-0 reverse on Tuesday, Michael O'Neill joked that he was "glad that Eidur Gudjohnsen is not available for this game". The problem for Northern Ireland is that Andri Gudjohnsen, Eidur's son, is in the squad, and on Friday emulated his father's achievement of scoring against Scotland at Hampden Park as Iceland enjoyed a 3-1 triumph. "We were just talking about this," Iceland boss Arnar Gunnlaugsson said. "Eidur Gudjohnsen also scored at Hampden (in 2003), now his son did it a couple of days ago. I think if history repeats itself (on Tuesday) it will be a joyful occasion for the Gudjohnsen family." Gunnlaugsson, who took charge of the national team in January, spent a big chunk of his playing career in England with Bolton, Leicester, and Stoke. Martin O'Neill paid a reported £2million in 1999 to take Gunnlaugsson to Filbert Street, where he was a team-mate of Gerry Taggart and Neil Lennon, and helped Leicester on their way to League Cup glory in 2000 before joining Stoke. "He was an iconic manager, one of the greats," Gunnlaugsson said of former Northern Ireland midfielder O'Neill. "You always try to pick up one or two things from the best. I played with Neil Lennon and Gerry Taggart as well, really just a great bunch of lads. "We had a great time at Leicester, won the League Cup, but it was a quality time so obviously you pick the brains of the good ones and there are one or two things I like to use from my time at Leicester." Gunnlaugsson has sought to implement an aggressive pressing style with Iceland. His reign began with home and away defeats to Kosovo in the Nations League play-offs, relegating them to League C, but last week's win in Scotland shows a way forward. There are plenty of similarities with Northern Ireland too. Iceland enjoyed their best ever period when they reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2016, going on to play in the World Cup two years later, but are now in a period of rebuilding. "I like the project that's ongoing here – young players, strong enthusiastic players, a lot of running abilities, so I'm expecting a really strong match," Gunnlaugsson said of Northern Ireland. "I think both nations really enjoyed (Euro 2016) and they're probably asking the question, 'Why can't we do it every other year?' Football is difficult, especially for small nations. "Now we also have a really good group of young players coming through who are playing at a really high level. "We try to combine that with experience and hopefully get the right mix. Is the World Cup in 2026 maybe too early? I don't know, but we certainly could give it a go."

Joining Larne was the best move I made, but I'm home for my daughter, says ex-Accies ace
Shaun Want is back in Scotland and looking for a club after three years in Northern Ireland Rutherglen ace Shaun Want says moving to Larne in Northern Ireland was the best decision of his career – but needs a return to Scotland after the birth of his infant daughter. Larne finished second in the Northern Ireland Football League Premiership, qualifying for the Europa Conference League play-off, but Want is out of contract after three years at the club. A contract extension offer was on the table, but 28-year-old Want has opted to return home for family reasons. Larne's Player of the Year, Players' Player of the Year, and also the recipient of three fans' Player of the Year awards, wants a return to Scotland, following the birth of daughter Amelia seven months ago. He said: 'I'm out of contract, and they've offered me one, but I'm not long having a baby, I have a seven-month old daughter, so I'm looking at my options. 'There's more to life than football, now, when you have a wee one. I've been living away and for seven months I've been back and forth. 'I've got to the stage now that I just want to be closer to home and be with my daughter every day. 'It has been brilliant at Larne – if it was a different situation I'd still be here, because I've loved every minute of it. 'It was a good season. We finished second in the league and qualified for Europe, and it was a good season for me, personally, with all the awards. 'We reached the league phase of the Conference League last season, which was an added bonus, and with us finishing second, we qualified for the play-offs for the Conference League.' Want came up through the youth set-up at Hamilton Accies, but left there for Larne in 2022. He said: 'It's the best decision I've made for me, personally, in my career. Playing in Europe and winning leagues is something I never thought I'd be able to achieve. 'I was at Hamilton for 13 years, and there were ups and downs, but I think it got to the point where I needed a fresh start. 'I think I went at the right time and I got that fresh start, I was there for so long, but I have nothing bad to say about the club. I wasn't playing every week at Hamilton, because I'd been there for so long I think I ended up being part of the furniture, and I think it was just the right thing for me to get a fresh start. 'I went to Larne, basically as an unknown, and I've loved every minute. 'Going there was a whole different experience, but my circumstances have changed, and I need to get back home for the family.' Want added: 'If I'm coming back to Scotland, I'm coming back a better player and a much better person, too. 'I'm realistic enough to know that Premiership would be hard to get, so I'm probably looking for an opportunity in the Championship. 'I want an opportunity to come back to Scotland and prove my ability here, because I've been over in Northern Ireland for three or four years. 'I feel that I would be coming back as a better player.' A statement from Larne read: 'We can confirm that Shaun Want will depart the club upon the expiry of his contract this month, returning to Scotland for family reasons. 'The club respects Shaun's decision to put family first and wishes him the best of luck at his next club. Thank you for your time as an Inver Red.'
