Celebrity announces new river cruises for 2027
The Royal Caribbean Group brand has ordered 10 ships to launch Celebrity River Cruises.
Destinations and itineraries haven't yet been revealed but Celebrity Cruises said it will sail 'through the heart of Europe's culture and history' and on the 'world's most iconic rivers'.
Bookings will open later this year and sailings will start in 2027.
The river cruise ships will have the same design as the current Edge series ocean ships.
Laura Hodges Bethge, president of Celebrity Cruises, said: 'Celebrity River Cruises will bring the quality and sophistication of our Edge series ocean ships to the most iconic rivers, starting with Europe.
'We've redefined travel on the ocean with our best-in-class hospitality, award-winning food and beverage experiences, and elevated design and style. We are thrilled to bring these experiences to the river and combine them with authentic, destination-rich itineraries that will give our guests an experience unlike any other.'
Jason Liberty, president and chief executive of Royal Caribbean Group, which owns Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises and Silversea, said: 'We're thrilled to announce our entry into the river cruise market through our Celebrity Cruises premium travel brand.
'Our guests and travel partners should expect us to do what we do best – innovate and elevate the river cruise experience as we meet the growing demand for intimate, culturally enriching travel experiences.'
Liberty highlighted research showing that half of the brand's passengers have experienced or are intending to go on a river cruise.
He added: 'We know they will enjoy Celebrity's elevated offering on the river.
'By leveraging our valuable loyalty programmes across our brands, we will deepen customer engagement and further our ability to keep guests within our ecosystem of vacation offerings.
'We are the best in the world at delivering the vacation of a lifetime, and this is the latest example of how we are building the capabilities to deliver a lifetime of vacations.'

Passenger injured in waterslide accident on board Royal Caribbean cruise
An adult guest was injured Thursday after a waterslide malfunction aboard Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas. An acrylic glass panel broke off while the guest was passing through the slide during an eastern Caribbean cruise from Miami, the cruise line said in a statement. The guest received medical care and is being treated for injuries, although the severity of their injuries is unknown at this time. 'Our team provided medical care to an adult guest when acrylic glass broke off a water slide as the guest passed through the slide,' according to a Royal Caribbean Group spokesperson. 'The guest is being treated for his injuries.' Fellow guests shared videos of water rushing out through the hole in the broken panel of the slide on social media. Panic-stricken people can be heard screaming for operators to 'stop the slide.' In a clip captured by Jim Muldoon, he asks if the person fell out of the slide, to which someone else replies, 'Yes, they did.' The waterslide is closed while the company investigates the incident. The ship left Miami on August 2 for an eastern Caribbean trip and is set to return to Florida on Saturday. The Independent has contacted Royal Caribbean for an updated comment. Launched in January 2024, the Icon of the Seas has 20 decks, over 2,800 cabins, and space for 7,600 guests and 2,350 crew. The shop offers 40 dining and entertainment venues, eight themed 'neighborhoods,' multiple pools, and Category 6, the largest waterpark at sea with six record-breaking slides, the company says. 'Roaring thunder means the Frightening Bolt is close, and this drop waterslide is the tallest at sea,' Royal Caribbean's website reads. 'Once your stomach lurches, it's too late. You're caught in the Pressure Drop, the first open free-fall slide at sea.'

There's been various reports of cruise ships sailing across the sea and losing power. There was the infamous 'Poop Cruise' incident in 2013, in which a Carnival liner was stuck at sea, leaving thousands of passengers without electricity - and recently became the subject of a hit Netflix documentary. More recently, the Celebrity Cruises Constellation lost power for several hours and was drifting along the coast of Italy. The incident was described as a 'technical issue' by the Royal Caribbean Group, Celebrity Cruises' parent company. But what exactly happens when a cruise ship loses power? Depending on what caused the electricity to be cut off, it's likely that the ship's propulsion would be lost. The ship would probably drift until power is regained, like in the Constellation's situation. Air conditioning was also shut off in this instance, and it's possible lights would go out too. More recently, the Celebrity Cruises Constellation lost power for several hours and was drifting along the coast of Italy As was the case of the 'Poop Cruise', toilets could stop working too if they use electrical pumps, while fresh water may also not be accessible. Perhaps a more extreme example, passengers on the 'Poop Cruise' had to put their faeces into red biohazard bags and leave them in the corridor as the flush function would not work. Passengers also camped outside on the deck to try and find cool shade in the heat, due to the air conditioning not working. The Royal Caribbean website offers some insight as to what would happen on one of their ships during a power outage. Back up generators are in place to help maintain power on the liner. 'If the main electrical power source is lost, we have plans for a contingency and we move to using the emergency generators,' the site reads. The generators are able to work without the main electricity supply and are separate from the ship's fuel supply. 'These are typically located on the upper decks and they have their own fuel supply and are completely independent,' the website adds. When used, the generators help to provide light and other aspects of the ship. 'The generators can provide emergency lighting, fire detection systems, operate elevators and even provide power to re-start the engines, if necessary,' the Royal Caribbean states. Communication methods can also be powered by the generators, ensuring the vessel remains in contact with land.

The casualty's exact condition is unknown. Icon of the Seas, operated by Royal Caribbean, is currently en route to Coco Cay, Bahamas, having departed from the Virgin Islands on Wednesday. Its waterslides are made of glass-fibre-reinforced plastic, according to Wiegand Waterrides. In a statement, the cruise ship said: 'Our team provided medical care to an adult guest when acrylic glass broke off a water slide as the guest passed through the slide. "The guest is being treated for his injuries. The water slide is closed for the remainder of the sailing pending an investigation.' The Icon of the Seas is a colossal cruise ship with the world's largest at-sea waterpark, called Thrill Island.
