Ireland calls on Haiti to secure release of group kidnapped from local orphanage
Simon Harris, the Irish foreign minister, spoke with his Haitian counterpart overnight, the government said in a statement, during which they agreed to stay in touch on their work to ensure the group is released, including missionary Gena Heraty who oversees the orphanage.
'It is imperative that she is released immediately,' Harris said separately on social media.
The attacks took place over the weekend when gunmen stormed the orphanage in Kenscoff, a mountainous community on the outskirts of the capital Port-au-Prince that has been under deadly attacks by armed gangs since the start of this year.
Father Richard Frechette, who works with Nos Petits Freres et Soeurs, the international charity that runs the orphanage, said that eight people had been kidnapped including the three-year-old boy, six staff members and Heraty, who heads special needs programs at the orphanage.
'We have not yet been able to reach a ransom agreement to free them,' he said.
'We hope for their fast and safe return,' the charity added on social media. 'Our commitment to the Haitian people remains as strong as ever.'
Heraty, who has lived in Haiti since 1993, runs the orphanage, which cares for up to 270 children. She is the latest in a string foreign missionaries to become the victim of kidnapping in Haiti.
Armed gangs have in recent years targeted a number of religious, charitable and medical aid groups, including hospitals, NGOs, nuns and priests from congregations based in and around the capital, as well as foreign missionaries.
The majority of kidnapping victims are Haitian citizens who are seized and held for ransom, often picked opportunistically from the gridlocked traffic of the capital Port-au-Prince.
More than 3,100 people were killed and 336 kidnapped for ransom in the first half of this year in Haiti, according to BINUH estimates, as the number of residents displaced by the extended conflict with the powerful gangs – largely grouped behind a coalition called Viv Ansanm, or 'Live Together' – nearly doubled to 1.3 million.
A recent report by the UN office in Haiti (BINUH) found the situation remained 'very volatile' in Kenscoff while gangs intensified and expanded their attacks in central Haiti and the agricultural Artibonite region.
BINUH considers Kenscoff of 'major strategic importance' as it overlooks the suburb of Petion-Ville, one of the capital's last hold-outs and the site of multiple embassies, banking institutions and hotels serving as diplomatic meeting places.
Haitian authorities have repeatedly called for more resources to fight the gangs. A partially deployed and deeply under-equipped UN-backed mission kicked off over a year ago but has had little effect in slowing gangs' advances.

Russia has launched a sick catalogue for kidnapped Ukrainian children being offered up for adoption who are sorted for hair and eye colour. The database, revealed by the head of a Ukrainian NGO, holds information on 294 children and is available on the education department of occupying Russian authorities in the Luhansk region. Mykola Kuleba, CEO of the Save Ukraine organisation, wrote in an Instagram post: 'Most children in this catalog were born in Luhansk Oblast before the Russian occupation and had citizenship.' 'Parents of some of them were killed by occupation authorities, others were simply issued Russian identification documents to legitimize their abduction.' The database describes the children as 'orphans and children left without parental care.' They are presented with photos, age, gender and personality traits. Some were described as 'obedient' and 'calm.' It allowed prospective adopters to filter children by age, eye and hair colour, and the preferred form of guardianship, such as adoption or foster care. Kuleba said: 'The way they describe our children is indistinguishable from a slave catalog. This is child trafficking in the 21st century, and the world must act to stop it immediately.' While Ukrainian officials have identified nearly 20,000 children who have been abducted by Russia, the real number is believed to be far higher. Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets puts the number at up to 150,000, while Presidential Commissioner for Children's Rights Daria Herasymchuk has given a range of 200,000–300,000. So far, less than 1,500 have been returned back home. Many of the children who grew up in areas occupied by Russia since it first invaded Ukraine in 2014, including parts of Crimea and Donetsk, have been 'systematically deported and transferred to Russian families in Moscow and other Russian regions.' The issue of Russia abducting children was the subject of a set of International Criminal Court arrest warrants against Putin and Russia's children's commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova. Both were accused of unlawfully deporting children from occupied areas of Ukraine and transferring them to the Russian Federation. The ICC wrote in its March 2023 warrant that Putin 'bears individual criminal responsibility' as Russia's leader. Charges dropped against elderly man after mom on motorized scooter 'falsely' accused him of Walmart child abduction
Charges have been dropped against a beloved father and husband who claimed he was falsely accused of trying to kidnap a child at a Walmart in Georgia. Mahendra Patel, 57, was locked up for two months after Caroline Miller, 26, told police that he had tried to abduct her two-year-old child before fleeing the Walmart in Acworth in March. But Patel's lawyer unearthed surveillance footage that contradicted Miller's claims, showing Patel did not leave the store in a rush and was never aggressive towards the mother. Patel said he had been simply trying to help Miller, whose child appeared to be falling from the motorized scooter she was using even though she is not disabled. Prosecutors dropped the charges against Patel on Wednesday after meeting with Miller and Patel, who they said wanted to 'put the incident behind them.' The Cobb County District Attorney's Office said they are 'satisfied that the ends of justice have been met' and 'pleased to have facilitated a resolution and are encouraged by the willingness of both parties to engage in a constructive dialogue.' Patel told 11 Alive: 'I feel relieved... This thing was hanging on my head for a long time and our family went through a lot of hell. We went through this, but today is a day of celebration and I'm thankful that I'm out.' 'It made me realize there's justice out there. The other patron also helped Miller's child as he nearly fell from her mobility scooter. The footage made it clear that Patel did not flee the scene. Instead, he calmly paid for his medicine before leaving. Five minutes later, Miller informed a Walmart employee that Patel tried to snatch her son. Patel was arrested three days later. When asked why Miller would make up such horrific claims against an innocent man, Patel's lawyer pointed out to Daily Mail that Miller has previously been involved in litigation against companies. In 2021 she filed a lawsuit against Lyft saying she had been raped by a driver. The lawsuit is ongoing.

Gang violence rocks Haiti's capital ahead of political handoff
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Aug 7 (Reuters) - Gang violence flared in Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince on Thursday and a top gang leader threatened the country's precarious government as it prepared to hand over its rotating leadership. Businessman Laurent Saint-Cyr is set to step into the rotating presidency of Haiti's transitional presidential council on Thursday, taking over from former central bank chief Fritz Alphonse Jean as the council and security authorities struggle to wrest control from powerful gangs. The Kenya-led multinational security support mission operating in Haiti said it had thwarted attacks on Thursday that gangs had plotted to "disrupt national stability and render the country ungovernable." Three officers from the mission were briefly hospitalized after two armed mission vehicles came under attack by Molotov cocktails and were set ablaze, the mission said in a statement. Bursts of gunfire were also heard in parts of the capital on Thursday morning. Gang alliance leader Jimmy Cherizier, alias Barbecue, said on Thursday that the gangs were planning to disrupt Saint-Cyr's transition later in the day. "We have decided to march on the Premier's office and the Villa d'Accueil to end it all," Cherizier said in a video shared on social media. Saint-Cyr is scheduled to take over the rotating presidency at a ceremony at the Villa d'Accueil, which has been serving as the government headquarters since the National Palace in downtown Port-au-Prince has become the site of frequent gun battles. His term runs until February 7, 2026, when the council's mandate was set to end and a newly elected president be inaugurated, although it is unclear if elections called for November will be able to take place. The transitional council, which took power in April last year, has been marked by political in-fighting. It has been criticized by many Haitians, including the country's top police unions, for failing to address the violence. Cherizier, a former police office alleged by the United Nations to have played a role in multiple massacres, has previously called for the toppling of Haiti's unelected government.
