A second shot at life — Terengganu's island jobs offer hope for parolees
Terengganu Prisons director Mohd Nasir Yusof said employers in various sectors have the opportunity to hire inmates categorised as parolees (ODP) and persons released on licence (OBB) through the Corporate Smart Internship for Parolees (CSI Parol) programme. This initiative aims to provide employment opportunities in different fields.
'A total of 720 inmates have participated in the CSI programme in the state, and of that number, about 500 individuals have been employed across various sectors.
So far, 32 inmates are employed by three different employers on Redang Island, while five inmates are working for a single employer on Perhentian Island, he told reporters after opening the Community, OBB and Employers' awareness programme on Perhentian Island, near here, today.
Mohd Nasir said the department aims for at least five employers in the sector to hire parolees this year.
He added that employers and inmates can benefit from the programme.
'The inmates involved are those nearing release and have undergone thorough screening. They are also continuously monitored during their employment with the employer.
'The feedback we have received from tourism sector employers about the working inmates has been very positive, such as their good treatment of customers and zero criminal misconduct. In some cases, inmates who were fully released from prison were immediately offered permanent employment by the same employer.
'This programme also aims to educate the public, especially employers, to give these individuals a second chance to rebuild their lives, regain their self-confidence, and contribute positively to society,' he said. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR — The Education Ministry today said it will carry out an immediate safety audit of all schools, including fully residential institutions and hostels, with findings to be presented to the ministry's top management within three months. It also reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on bullying, saying offenders may face suspension or expulsion, while administrators, teachers and education officers who fail to manage complaints according to guidelines will face disciplinary action. A new intervention programme called Bangkit Bermaruah will be introduced for students suspended from school, focusing on community service and character development. The ministry said psychosocial support will be strengthened at every level, with guidance and counselling teachers playing a key role in prevention and intervention. It urged all parties to work together to tackle bullying in a comprehensive and coordinated manner, adding that creating a safe school environment is a shared responsibility.

MOE denies shielding parties in school bullying cases, vows full cooperation in Zara probe
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — The Ministry of Education (MOE) has reiterated that it will not compromise on any matter related to bullying in schools. Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh said the ministry has never sought to shield any party involved in such incidents, contrary to certain allegations. 'The ministry will not compromise on any matter related to bullying. Secondly, MOE will not and has never attempted to protect anyone involved, as alleged,' he told the Dewan Rakyat today. He was responding to a supplementary question from Semporna MP Tan Sri Shafie Apdal, who referred to the ongoing bullying case involving Zara Qairina and asked what measures were being taken to protect students and ensure justice. Shafie also stressed that law enforcement must not protect any party involved, regardless of their identity. Wong said the ministry has always been ready to cooperate fully with police in assisting investigations at all levels. He added that the ministry has established guidelines and circulars (SPI) to address disciplinary issues and bullying in schools, which are enforced and updated periodically to strengthen preventive measures. Zara, 13, reportedly fell from the third floor of her school dormitory in Papar on July 16 and was pronounced dead the following day, amid widespread public concern over allegations that her death may have involved school bullying and a cover-up. The exhumation of her remains at the Tanjung Ubi Muslim Cemetery in Kampung Mesapol, Sipitang, was completed at 7.15pm on Saturday. They were later sent to Queen Elizabeth I Hospital (HQEI) for a post-mortem scheduled the following morning.

Datuk ‘Blade' sworn in as KL police chief, pledges all-out effort to achieve force's vision
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — New Kuala Lumpur police chief Commissioner Datuk Fadil Marsus has vowed to continue the work of his predecessor after his appointment took effect today. Fadil, whose call sign is 'Blade', took over from acting KL police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad at a handover ceremony at the KL police contingent headquarters here. 'We must optimise our resources, police and the public together, towards achieving a positive outcome for KL,' he said. The Sabah and Tawau native said his foremost task was to go 'all-out' to achieve the vision and mission of the Royal Malaysia Police as the new police chief. Before his appointment, Fadil served as Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) deputy director (Intelligence/Operations). He replaces Commissioner Datuk Mohd Rusdi Isa, who was appointed Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director in June.
