Over 128,000 Displaced by Surge in Violence in Syria
Israa Farhan More than 128,000 people have been displaced in southern Syria within a week due to escalating violence, according to a statement released on Sunday by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), a United Nations agency. The IOM reported a dramatic increase in displacement, particularly on 19 July, when over 43,000 individuals were forced to flee their homes in a single day. The humanitarian crisis is unfolding as clashes intensify in the region, particularly in and around the city of Suwayda. Relative calm returned to Suwayda on Sunday morning following the Syrian government's announcement of a ceasefire. This came after a week of sectarian violence that reportedly left around 1,000 people dead. Eyewitnesses and journalists from Agence France-Presse confirmed the reduced tensions, noting that Druze community groups had regained control of the city. Syrian government forces were also seen repositioning throughout the region. Late Saturday evening, Syrian Interior Ministry spokesperson Nour Al-Din Baba confirmed on Telegram that all tribal fighters had withdrawn from Suwayda, bringing an end to active combat within city neighborhoods. Syrian President Ahmad Al-Shara announced the ceasefire earlier that day, pledging to protect minority communities and hold violators from all sides accountable. The government has also begun deploying security forces in Suwayda to restore stability. OPEN// President Sisi reaffirms Egypt's unwavering support to AL
CAIRO, July 20 (MENA) – President Abdel Fattah El Sisi on Sunday reiterated Egypt's commitment to supporting the Arab League, in light of the pan-Arab body's pivotal role in promoting joint Arab action and closing Arab ranks to overcome region's complex and unprecedented challenges. This came during president Sisi's meeting with Secretary General of the Arab League of Arab Ahmed Abul Gheit. The meeting addressed the latest developments pertinent to Arab crises and issues, mainly the situation in Gaza Strip and the West Bank, as well as the massive efforts being made by Egypt and Qatar to reach a ceasefire and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, according to Spokesman for the Presidency, Ambassador Mohamed el Shennawi. The meeting tackled prospects of pursuing a just and comprehensive resolution to the Palestinian cause through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, in accordance with international legitimacy, the protection of the rights of the Palestinian people and the prevention of their displacement. The meeting also touched on the latest developments in Syria and Libya, in addition to the situation in Sudan and the ongoing efforts to restore security and stability there. The meeting tackled the political and security situations in the Horn of Africa and the security of the Red Sea. For his part, Abul Gheit commended Egypt's wise stances, which contribute to restoring security and stability in the Middle East, especially through its support for a just and final solution to the Palestinian issue, as the only path to achieving lasting and comprehensive peace in the region. 31 Injured in Car Crash in Los Angeles
Israa Farhan A devastating car crash in Los Angeles early Sunday morning has left 31 people injured, including several in critical condition, after a vehicle drove into a crowd of pedestrians. According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, more than 100 firefighters rushed to the scene. At least three individuals were critically injured, while six others sustained serious wounds. Authorities have not confirmed the cause of the crash, though initial police investigations suggest the driver may have lost consciousness before striking the crowd.
