Bengal cabinet nod for inclusion of new castes on OBC list

The cabinet also gave its nod to a proposal to make Farakka a new subdivision in Murshidabad district, he said. These 76 new castes would be added to the existing 64 ethnic groups on the Other Backward Class (OBC) list in the state, he said. Kolkata, Jun 2 (PTI) The cabinet on Monday approved recommendations of the West Bengal Commission for Backward Classes (WBCBC) to include 76 new castes on the list for OBC, an official said. It was learned that the new subdivision would be constituted of Farakka, Shamsherganj, Suti-1 and Suti-2 blocks, he said. Earlier, these four blocks were part of the Jangipur subdivision. 'Due to the growing population, the Jangipur subdivision authorities were facing difficulties in executing administrative work in the vast area. Hence, the decision was taken,' the official told PTI. A source in Nabanna, the state secretariat, said that the council of ministers approved a decision to initiate a tendering process again to invite fresh bids for the proposed Rs 25,000-crore Tajpur deep-sea port project. The state government had, in 2023, dissolved the letter of intent (LoI) handed over to Gautam Adani-controlled Adani Ports to develop the deep-sea port, he said. 'The cabinet okayed the reopening of the tender for the Tajpur deep sea port project. The necessary steps will be followed soon,' the source said. During the cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the state secretariat, approval was given to create 109 contract-based posts at various administrative levels for the new subdivision, he added. Notably, Banerjee, during her recent visit to the riot-hit areas of Murshidabad district, had announced the formation of the new subdivision. On Monday, the state cabinet also approved the creation of 336 posts and filling up the vacancies in the departments of home, health, finance, law, and municipal affairs, the official added. Kadri Market Complex opens after six years

Mangaluru: Six years after the closure of an old market at Kadri, the new Kadri Market Complex built by the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) opened on Monday. All the 38 merchants, who were carrying out business in temporary stalls provided by the MCC by the side of the opposite road, have shifted to the new facility. The Kadri Market project was taken up for Rs 12.3 crore jointly through the funds from Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) and MCC. Vijay Kumar, revenue officer of the MCC, said that the temporary stalls will be demolished soon. "We have ensured that all shops functioning in the temporary building are shifted to the new building. Engineers and staff will take initiatives to disconnect the electricity and water supply to the temporary building. Later, the building will be demolished. Meanwhile, all the merchants have commenced business in the new market complex," the officer said. All merchants who were conducting business in the temporary stalls were given preference while auctioning shops, but no concession was given. All of them agreed to pay the rent, which was fixed as per the govt guidance value, in the new market complex. There are separate shops for flowers, vegetables, fish, chicken, and meat in the new complex. Meanwhile, two floors of the complex have been given to individuals on a contract basis through tenders. They may set up an office or any other business on premises, he said, adding that while there are 40 shops in the new market complex, two have been reserved for merchants from SC/ST communities. The MCC availed Rs 8.6 crore from the KUIDFC to build the new market complex. Meanwhile, the city corporation invested Rs 3.6 crore for the project, which began after vacating merchants from the land in 2019. Both the lower and upper basements have been reserved for the parking of two-wheeler and four-wheeler vehicles.

CCTV network, power substations & cycle tracks: Gurgaon gets s 141cr infra push

Gurgaon: A long-pending project costing Rs 109 crore aimed at boosting urban safety and streamlining traffic movement has got Haryana govt's approval. Overall, projects worth Rs 141 crore have been approved for the city. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Nearly three years after completing Phase 1, GMDA finally received the green light to begin Phase 2 of the city-wide CCTV surveillance and adaptive traffic management system. GMDA officials said that work would begin shortly after allotting the work to the contracting agency. The proposal was approved on Monday at a meeting of the high-powered purchase committee (HPPC) chaired by chief minister Nayab Singh Saini. Phase 1, comprising 1,200 cameras at 218 locations, was completed in Aug 2022. However, the second phase — involving 2,722 cameras at 258 new locations — was awaiting HPPC clearance since GMDA floated tenders in March last year. A GMDA official said, "With approvals now in place, we will move swiftly to issue work orders and mobilise execution. The expanded network will strengthen real-time monitoring, public safety and traffic regulation. " The HPPC meeting also cleared two more city projects — a Rs 17.3 crore 66kV substation at Chandu Budhera WTP to power upcoming filtration units and a Rs 14.7 crore cycle track and footpath corridor along sectors 58–61 and 59–61. The substation will be developed on a 15-acre site, with two 10 MVA 66/6.6kV transformers and two 3,000 kVA 6.6/0.415kV transformers, among other infrastructure. It is expected to be completed within 12 months of allotment. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This is aimed at ensuring uninterrupted power to three new filtration units — one of which is partially operational, another under construction and the third still at the tendering stage. Though the substation will take a year to commission, until then, the new filtration unit at the plant will continue operating on temporary power drawn from an 11kV feeder from the Daultabad substation. Similarly, 4km of cycle track and footpaths will be constructed along master roads between sectors 58–61 and 59–61, near Golf Course Extension Road. The project aims to encourage the use of non-motorised vehicles by creating dedicated cycling lanes and improving pedestrian walkways. GMDA has set a nine-month timeline for completion once work begins. However, two sewerage projects, which are meant to fix overburdened and damaged master lines along Sohna Road and from sectors 33–34 to Hero Honda Chowk and near Basai Chowk, were not approved as the bids quoted were over 50% above estimates. Officials now say that fresh tenders will be issued shortly after revising the estimates.
