UP undertakes work to restore natural flow of Budhi Rapti river in Shravasti

Lucknow: As part of its ambitious mission to revive extinct and vanishing rivers across Uttar Pradesh, the Yogi Adityanath govt has initiated restoration work on the Budhi Rapti river in Shravasti district.
With over 100 rivers already undergoing revival, this initiative aims to restore their natural flow and ecological balance.
Shravasti district magistrate Ajay Kumar Dwivedi said that under the instructions of CM Yogi, a major initiative has been launched to address water scarcity and restore environmental equilibrium through the rejuvenation of the Budhi Rapti river.
The river's alignment was mapped using remote sensing technology, and the restoration work is now underway.
To formally mark the beginning of the initiative, the DM and CDO Shahid Ahmad offered prayers and symbolically dug the soil with a spade.
The revival of the Budhi Rapti is being carried out with mass public participation and under the MGNREGA scheme. After the monsoon, large-scale desilting and flow restoration activities will be undertaken to help the river return to its natural course by next year.
The river's total length is 67.03 km with a catchment area of 18,356.64 hectares.

Kolkata: Every year, third July Sunday will be celebrated as the 'Kingfisher Day' in Bengal. Starting today, the third Sunday of every July will also see Bengal birders undertaking a survey to know status and distribution of kingfishers in Bengal. The decision was taken during the Bengal Birders' Meet on Sunday. While white-throated kingfisher is the state bird of Bengal, the state is also home to 11 more species of kingfisher. "The Birdwatchers' Society (BWS) is proud to propose that beginning this year, the week starting from the third Sunday will be observed as 'Kingfisher Census Week' across Bengal. This will focus on documenting the distribution and diversity of kingfishers," said Sujan Chatterjee of BWS. According to both Malayalam and Arabic calendars, the death anniversary day falls on Sunday, which corresponds to Karthika and Muharram 24, the very day when the catastrophe struck. Underscoring the scale of the tragedy, many families are left with sole survivors who have to perform the rites for the rest of the departed family members. For instance, Punchirimattom native Abhijith, who lost his entire family in the landslide, will find the moments all the more poignant. He will be performing bali tharpan for five members of his family — father Subramanian (50), mother Babitha (45), sister Greeshma (25), elder brother Girijith (22) and grandmother Thayikuttty (84), all of whom were swept away by the landslide. "The tragedy left me completely alone. It's now my responsibility to perform bali for them.
